MOVE OVER, SABRINA — AMBER NIGHTSTONE’S HERE!

Amber brings magic and mayhem to Greendale in a brand-new Sabrina anniversary special in September!

July 27, 2022 — This September, Archie Comics welcomes Amber Nightstone to its growing roster of world-renowned characters, a new antagonist for the iconic teenage witch, Sabrina Spellman! Fans can meet Amber for the first time in the collectible one-shot comic book, SABRINA ANNIVERSARY SPECTACULAR #1, part of a wide array of new titles celebrating Sabrina’s bewitching 60-year publishing history.

In the new lead story by Archie Legend Dan Parent, Amber is an evil witch born at exactly the same time as Sabrina. Only one witch born that day may live amongst mortals, and Amber wants her turn, so she has to erase Sabrina from history!

“The creation of Amber Nightstone is super fun because believe it or not, in Sabrina’s 60-year history, she’s never had a true nemesis,” Dan said. “Sure, she’s had her adversaries in the past, but Amber is basically the evil version of Sabrina. And Amber is tired of being cast aside and wants her time in the limelight. So now as Sabrina turns 60, we enter a whole new realm of fun!”

“I started referring to her as ‘Dark Sabrina,’ and that’s where the thinking was originally,” added Archie Comics Editor-In-Chief Mike Pellerito. “Sabrina has a great cast of characters in the comics but didn’t have a magical teen rival until now. That’s how I think of the cast of characters: Is there a way to challenge something established? Do we need someone who can do something different and give us some fun story points? Having Dan Parent on this kind of thing is great; he’s a (not so) secret weapon!”!

After Sabrina’s debut in ARCHIE’S MAD HOUSE #22 back in July 1962 (in a story by George Gladir and Dan DeCarlo), she went on to captivate fans for decades with magical adventures in comics, TV animation, a hit sitcom, and the blockbuster Netflix streaming series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, starring Kiernan Shipka. This summer’s anniversary celebration also includes a retrospective trade paperback collection and a themed issue of ARCHIE SHOWCASE DIGEST.

SABRINA ANNIVERSARY SPECTACULAR #1 releases September 7 in comic shops nationwide, boasting a cover by Dan Parent and several reprint milestone stories from throughout Sabrina history.

SABRINA ANNIVERSARY SPECTACULAR #1 (ONE-SHOT)

We couldn’t possibly enter spooky season without celebrating Sabrina as much as possible! And we’re kicking off this spectacular with a BRAND NEW Sabrina story that we guarantee will be the greatest Sabrina Halloween story ever! In "Celebration Vexation!" It's Sabrina's birthday and she’s celebrating her day—with an epic battle against her nemesis, a BRAND NEW character named AMBER NIGHTSTONE! Amber is an evil witch born at exactly the same time as Sabrina. Only one witch born that day may live amongst mortals, and Amber wants her turn, so she has to erase Sabrina from history! EISNER AWARD NOMINATED KILLADELPHIA GETS DELUXE HARDCOVER EDITION THIS NOVEMBER

The city that was once the symbol of liberty and freedom has fallen prey to corruption, poverty, unemployment, brutality… and vampires. TOO DEAD TO DIE PROMISES ESPIONAGE INTRIGUE THIS DECEMBER

PORTLAND, Ore. 09/02/2022 — The fan-favorite writer/artist team of Marc Guggenheim and Howard Chaykin (Blade, Wolverine) reunites for an original graphic novel in the forthcoming Too Dead to Die. This all-new story promises classic spy novel suspense and is set to hit shelves from Image Comics this December.

In the 1980s, Simon Cross was America’s top super-spy. In Too Dead to Die, he faces down today’s very different world and a past that has come back to haunt him, forcing him out of retirement for one final adventure.

The project achieves a longtime goal for Guggenheim. “Too Dead To Die is one of those ideas I’ve been thinking about for years before the Covid quarantine gave me the opportunity to actually write it. I started off writing “on spec” without any particular artist in mind. But ten pages in, I realized that all the images I was seeing in my head were illustrated by Howard, whom I had the good fortune to collaborate with on Blade and Wolverine," he said. "I was writing with Howard in mind without realizing it. Fortunately, Howard was amenable to coming aboard and I love how he’s brought Simon’s story to life. It’s very exciting to be getting Too Dead To Die out into the world after all this time.”

Chaykin added: “Few things delight me more, professionally, at least, than collaborating with Marc Guggenheim. I had a great time drawing this Simon Cross adventure, and I can only hope every reader can share that delight.”

Too Dead to Die (ISBN: 978-1-5343-2451-0, Diamond Code SEP220161) will be available on Wednesday, December 14 at local comic shops and at independent bookstores, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, and Indigo on Tuesday, December 20.

How to Make a Monster: Ugly Memories of Chicago from a South Side Escapee by Casanova Frankenstein and Glenn Pearce

How to Make a Monster is Casanova Frankenstein's unflinching memoir of growing up as a Black INTJ 13-year-old in 1980.

Conveyed as a bleak first-person narrative with darkly humorous overtones, Casanova Frankenstein reveals how real life experience shaped his hard-bitten, survivalist view of life. His was a world of fear and isolation punctuated by bullying thugs, the stifling atmosphere of the Lutheran school on the South Side of Chicago, racial segregation, unapproachable girls, and a home life consisting of an emotionally distant and unsupportive mother and an violent, alcoholic cop father who was not above giving his son a good thrashing now and again while preaching Christian family values. It is a searing portrait of an unbearably painful upbringing.

How to Make a Monster is illustrated by Australian outsider artist Glenn Pearce in a rare creative symbiosis in which Pearce captures Frankenstein's inner turmoil using a variety of stunningly realized artistic approaches from naturalistic portraiture to outrageously inventive phantasmagoric imagery. A seamlessly contrapuntal balancing act between Frankenstein's raw, unadorned writing and Pearce's stunningly detailed drawing.

Living & Dying in America: A Daily Chronicle 2020-2022 by Steve Brodner

Every day, late at night or early in the morning, from March 26, 2020 to January 1, 2022, the political cartoonist and illustrator Steve Brodner would get to work. In those midnight hours, he would review the day's reportage, sit down at his drawing board, and memorialize a singular person or event that played a role, willingly or unwillingly, in shaping that day.

Living & Dying in America includes many lovingly drawn portraits of those who died in the pandemic and of those who displayed extraordinary strength, decency, courage, and endurance. But Brodner does not ignore those who perpetuated the pandemic in word or deed: he also etches in acid caricature those public servants and private entrepreneurs who preyed upon the public, spread lies, and aided the virus' spread through their ignorance, incompetence, and malfeasance. Released via Brodner's daily column in The Nation, the drawings range from quick, expertly realized sketches to elaborate paintings to carefully rendered mixed media, depending on how much time and stamina and inspiration he had left at the end of the day. Each spontaneously drawn or painted image is accompanied by a brief biography of those who died, or a short summary of the person's conduct or the event depicted.

Taken as a whole, Living & Dying in America is a chronicle of those who died and those who honorably served the living — as well as an indictment of those institutions and political figures who betrayed the public trust. It is a searing and essential moral document, written and drawn on a daily basis with feverish intensity by one of the great forces of American cartooning.
