PSA Bringing Zombies to San Diego Comic-Con
(San Diego, California) -- PSA (www.psacard.com), the world's largest third-party certification company for trading cards, autographs and memorabilia, will be giving away free PSA-graded samples of The Walking Dead™ and Game of Thrones® trading cards at Comic-Con International: San Diego, July 17 - 21, 2013.
PSA will also be giving away, while supplies last, copies of the August 2013 issue of SMR magazine with a cover story about collecting autographs of actors in the hit The Walking Dead cable television program. The entire August issue of the magazine is devoted to the popular genre of entertainment collectibles such as Star Trek™, The Addams Family™ and classic movie monsters.
Visitors to the PSA booth (#5617) can also enter for the chance to win the zombie-inspired original acrylic-on-canvas artwork created by renowned artist, Arthur K. Miller, for the magazine's cover. Valued at more than $3,000, the custom-framed artwork will be given away to a lucky visitor in a random drawing among those who register at the PSA booth during the show. No purchase is necessary to enter this drawing.
PSA/DNA autograph experts will be available at Comic-Con to authenticate autographs on-site.
"PSA-certified collectibles often sell for premium prices because of the strength and credibility of the PSA brand," said Joe Orlando, President of PSA and Editor of SMR (Sports Market Report) magazine.
"PSA/DNA uses an invisible DNA marker on certified items. It can only be seen using a calibrated laser, and counterfeiters have only a 1 in 33 trillion chance of duplicating that DNA strand," explained Orlando.
Since 1991, PSA experts have examined and certified more than 20 million trading cards, autographs and other entertainment and sports memorabilia with an estimated cumulative value of more than $1 billion.
The Comic-Con convention will be held in the San Diego Convention Center, 111 W. Harbor Drive. For additional information about the event, go to www.comic-con.org.

June Market Trends Our coverage of movies based on comics properties last month seems to have had an effect on activity, with Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Mar 63), #12 (May 64), and #14 (Jul 64) all showing significant changes to value over the past few weeks. Amazing Spider-Man #1, which features the wallcrawler's first meeting with The Fantastic Four and The Chameleon, as well as the first appearance of J. Jonah Jameson, moved from $16,300 to $18,500. Doctor Octopus' unmasking of Spider-Man in Amazing Spider-Man #12 was also on the move, but in the opposite direction, decreasing from $15,800 to $14,500. The Green Goblin's first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #14 dropped from $14,700 to $12,800, but then rebounded slightly to $13,000. With the release of Iron Man 3 in early May, it's no surprise that there's activity on adventures of the armored Avenger, but it's not issues that one would necessarily think of. Iron Man (1st series) #1 (May 68) moved up from $775 to $825, while #55 (Feb 73), the first appearance of Thanos, moved from $725 to $775. Hugo Pratt's Corto Maltese: Ballad of the Salt Sea is also moving up in value with several issues more than tripling in value from $2.95 to $9.50 each. The downward spiral for Sensation Comics #1 (Jan 42), that we reported last month, continues. The issue, which features the origin of Wonder Woman and the first appearances of Wildcat and Mr. Terrific, has dropped nearly another $1,000 from $3,600 to $2,650. Apparently, the market continues to correct itself. For our full newsletter including Comic Conundrums and the latest tech tip for getting the most out of ComicBase, visit www.comicbase.com.

Details of Neil Gaiman’s return to THE SANDMAN and genre-defying slate of Vertigo titles unveiled in advance of premiere pop culture event of the year
DC Entertainment took the top three spots on the June comic book sales charts, with SUPERMAN UNCHAINED #1 - the debut issue of a new ongoing series by the dream team of writer Scott Snyder and DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and artist Jim Lee – clocking in as the top-selling DC Entertainment periodical according to Diamond Comic Distributors, the largest comic book distributor in the world.
In addition to the record-breaking June debut of Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Man of Steel” and DC Entertainment’s SUPERMAN UNCHAINED #1, the month saw additional success with the periodical launch of June’s #2 book in sales, BATMAN/SUPERMAN #1. The new series debuted with a story showcasing the first meeting between the two iconic characters from writer Greg Pak and artist Jae Lee. Additionally, Pak was named the new ongoing writer of the original Superman comic book series, ACTION COMICS, starting in November.
The year continued to be a strong one for Batman, as the Dark Knight’s flagship title kicked off the anticipated origin story “Zero Year” with June’s #3 book in sales, BATMAN #21 - also written by the prolific Snyder with art by Greg Capullo. The story, slated to run for 11 issues, will also feature tie-ins with other DC Comics–The New 52 titles in November.
The flurry of news and activity arrives as DC Entertainment prepares for a full-court press at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2013, the world’s largest pop culture event. With an interactive booth featuring Superman costumes through the years in celebration of The Man of Steel's 75th anniversary, creator signings, giveaways, on-stage demos, video game consoles, DC Collectibles showcases, a green screen for photos, numerous panels - including the company’s first ever DC Digital panel - and events throughout the show, the con promises to be a can’t-miss moment. Fans can also check out a new Justice League “Trinity War” promo reel discussing the major beats of the summer event – directly from superstar writer and “Trinity War” mastermind Geoff Johns, in advance of September's universe-wide FOREVER EVIL event, featuring art by top talent David Finch. The video debuted today and can be seen here.
Last week, Vertigo revealed details of Neil Gaiman's highly anticipated return to the Sandman universe. Twenty-five years in the making, THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE will explore what the Dream King was up to prior to being captured and trapped, as shown in THE SANDMAN #1. Brought to life by renowned artist J.H. Williams III, the new six-issue, bi-monthly series is set for release on October 30th and will feature covers by Williams and original series cover artist Dave McKean.
“Superman, Batman, Justice League and The Sandman – an all-star cast of characters, books and creative talents are converging to tell some of the best stories in DC Entertainment’s history,” said Diane Nelson, DC Entertainment President. “We’re extremely excited to connect with our fans in San Diego and showcase some of the amazing stories and moments we have in store. It’s already been an amazing year, and we’re excited to unveil what’s next.”
Earlier this month, Vertigo’s upcoming genre-defying fall titles were announced in The New York Times. The impressive lineup includes the dark fantasy COFFIN HILL, the epic adventure HINTERKIND, the post-apocalyptic SUICIDERS, THE SANDMAN spin-off THE DEAD BOY DETECTIVES, a new THE WITCHING HOUR anthology and the erotic thriller THE DISCIPLINE. Adding to the excitement was news that AMERICAN VAMPIRE, the critically acclaimed series from Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque, would return in December.
The box office success of “Man of Steel” carried over into DC Collectibles’ June sales, as the high-end toy and collectibles line from DC Entertainment saw extremely strong sales of its acclaimed statue line based on characters from the film including Superman, Jor El and General Zod.
INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US was again the leading title for digital comics sales in June, with all four new chapters taking the top four sales spots, followed by popular Same-Day-Digital titles BATMAN #21, SUPERMAN UNCHAINED #1 and BATMAN/SUPERMAN #1. Looking forward to July, DC Entertainment’s digital comics line-up adds highly anticipated new title BATMAN ’66, featuring a DC2 interactive experience.
On the book trade side, the prequels to WATCHMEN made their debuts as collected editions. BEFORE WATCHMEN: MINUTEMEN/SILK SPECTRE and BEFORE WATCHMEN: OZYMANDIAS/CRIMSON CORSAIR Deluxe Editions performed well in the marketplace, debuting as two of DC Entertainment’s top sellers. Also of note, several DC Comics – The New 52 collections - including BATMAN Vol. 2, BATMAN, INCORPORATED Vol. 1, AQUAMAN Vol. 2, ACTION COMICS Vol. 2, BATMAN AND ROBIN Vol. 2 and the WATCHMEN and SOLO Deluxe Editions - landed on The New York Times Hardcover Graphic Book Bestseller list. Vertigo titles THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Book 2 and GET JIRO! landed on The New York Times Hardcover and Paperback Graphic Book Bestseller lists, respectively.
The company hit the road to spread the word on all things DC Entertainment with the company’s second successful “Retailer Roadshow” series of events. DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee traveled across the country and met with key direct market comic shop retailers to discuss upcoming projects, retailer-focused initiatives and announce new titles like October’s SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN, JUSTICE LEAGUE 3000 and the “Lights Out” Green Lantern crossover.
Later this month, the newest issue of MAD Magazine will hit stands and feature another hearty dose of “The Usual Gang of Idiots” sharp wit and cutting satire – including celebrity jabs, another ridiculous MAD fold-in and a riotous riff on “The Hobbit.” Editor John Ficarra and co. will also be on hand at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2013 for the annual hilarity that is the MAD Magazine panel, along with teases and information on the much-anticipated INSIDE MAD collection.

SDCC DEBUTS
DESCRIPTION: Bill Paxton & Arcana Comics presents 7 Holes for Air. Bob Rourke is the kind of man they don't make anymore. He's a tough son of a b****: A fifty-year-old steelworker who smokes, drinks, and never complains, even when he's in pain. After a persistent headache sends him to a doctor for the first time in his life, Bob learns he's facing the end. With disease ravaging his body, Bob soldiers on at home, at work and in an alternate Spaghetti Western reality in which his real-life antagonists become actual villains. Now Bob will stare down death the only way he knows how - with grit and determination - as he struggles against the ghosts of his past and the desire to leave something behind for his wife and daughter.
NOTE: BILL PAXTON will be signing at the Arcana Booth, 2415, on Thursday during SDCC from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm!
DESCRIPTION: MTV Comics and Arcana Studio present THE GLOOM. Once called a 'Mel Brooks movie of a comic' by COMICS INTERNATIONAL, acclaimed creators Tony Lee (Doctor Who) & Dan Boultwood (It Came!) return to the hero that brought them together! In 1940's Manhattan he's the only vigilante blocking the Vermillion and his N@zi allies from their plan to rule the world with ATOMIC ZEPPELINS! No pulp hero is safe from parody, in the comic series that once had the review 'Buy this book - sell a kidney if you have to!'
NOTE: Tony Lee, writer of many of IDW's Doctor Who books and others will be signing during SDCC.
DESCRIPTION: Jack and Tino, two strangers with a questionable past arrive in the reclusive town of Dreary where they unknowingly fulfill a prophecy that the town believes will precede the coming of the apocalypse. They are caught up in a whirlwind of judgment and paranoia, and it's a race against time to escape with their lives. The Devil is Due in Dreary is a music rich ride through the folklore of the old west. With rattling desert bones, pompadours, classic cars, and pearl handled pistols, it's an action packed rockabilly take on the classic western.
NOTE: David Parkin and Daryl Freimark will be signing during the convention.

About The Hero Initiative
The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book artists and craftsmen in need. Hero Initiative creates a financial safety net for yesterday’s creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It’s a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment.
Since its inception, The Hero Initiative has had the good fortune to grant over $500,000 to the comics veterans who have paved the way for those in the industry today. For more information, visit www.HeroInitiative.org or call 626-676-6354.
