Marvel Unlimited is closing down.

This has been discussed elsewhere, but apparently not yet in these forums.

The gist of it is that Marvel Unlimited will not exist at all after December 28th, 2026, and is being replaced by a customized stance of the well-known webcomics plataform "Webtoon", scheduled to start at November 16th, 2026.  It is apparently to be managed by the regular staff of the Webtoon service, and not by anyone working for Marvel or Disney.

As of last 5th, it is no longer possible to subscribe to Marvel Unlimited already.

The FAQ states that the physical comics will remain on their regular wednesdays schedule.

I believe that the regulars of these forums are somewhat less inclined to read digital comics than average, but this still feels like a matter of interest.

This piece of news, of course, comes hot on the heels of the announcement that as of July 2027 Marvel Comics will be relocated to the Walt Disney Studios Burbank lot in California.

I am hardly an expert on the Webtoon plataform, but I have had a bit of experience with it. It has a ton of oriental comics (Manhwa / Manuha / Manga depending on whether it is considered Korean, Chinese or Japanese) and is very receptive towards self-publishing by people who are not necessarily professionals.  Reminds me of a friendlier, less corporate-looking Comixology.

It is also rather more skilled at creating reader interest than Marvel Unlimited, with a lot of microtransactions and general teasing.  Interestingly, it is very openly aimed towards mobile devices and their dedicated application for Apple and Android; most of the content can't be read otherwise, although it is common practice to offer the early chapters via computer browser as well. The whole interface resembles Marvel's Infinite Comics quite a bit, with a lot of vertical scrolling and not very little of waiting for pictures to load.

There is already as small but significant sample of Marvel content there - Hickman's Avengers, Joss Whedon's 2004 "Astonishing X-Men" jump to mind.  A Miles Morales GN as well.

DC, curiously enough, seems to be represented mostly by Batman licensed fanfic.  But there are also titles from Boom!, IDW, Dark Horse.

The way I see it, this is Marvel third-partying its digital comics business for good.  I don't expect Marvel or Disney to even attempt to develop or hire the sort of skills necessary to compete with or improve on Webtoon's service at any time in the predictable future.

I do expect this change to make the digital comics side of Marvel more profitable than it was under Marvel Unlimited.  Hopefully that will lead to better targeted marketing of individual lines and specific franchises and improvements to creator and editorial freedom.

The most exciting potential benefit IMO is the incentive for events and crossovers to become more organic and less artificially inflated.

However, I do not think that this move bodes well for the medium term health of the paper comics.
