They certainly did...but as you can see, a mirror is a visually based effect, and so, it can be easily depicted and viewers catch the concept very easily. Instead of more intangible concepts....like honor, mystery, love, indecision. and Red K. LOL!
It also gives away that the comics were aimed at kids. They are fascinated by mirrors and the strange parallel world therein.
Also notice that a mirror is always depicted in comics by having diagonal lines drawn on it (never perpendicular or horizontal.) And the lines usually (but not always) descend from top right to bottom left!

The silver glass has charm and danger.
I'd still like to believe there is a Wonderland beyond the looking glass.
