For those too young to remember, back in the Silver Age when Superman was the best-selling character in comics, everyone wondered why Superman and Wonder Woman weren't dating. Now, Batman is the most popular character, so everyone wants Bats and WW to be doing it. (Or having once done it, which is being alluded to.)

But in between, somewhere in the Bronze Age, there was a fan cry that "fellow royalty" King Aquaman and Princess Diana should be attracted to each other. And there were, in fact, occasional remarks in Justice League of America and elsewhere that maybe they had a lot in common. It never went anywhere, of course, but this aging comics fan remembers a few leading comments that were there for no other reason.

So for Bronze Age fans we have this Annual, where in the first story Wonder Woman teams up with Aquaman, and in the second, Wonder Woman teams up with Mera (for those who have imagined those two together).

I don't have anything more to say, except that it did occur to me that one aspect of this book was the enormous fan service being achieved.

Another aspect is that all three of these characters -- Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Mera -- have made tremendous strides away from their Golden Age silliness and Silver Age awkwardness to something almost modern and interesting.

Almost. Almost. Man, Aquaman is coming so close to being a "real" character. Wonder Woman is already there (to my mind) in her own book, but here is played one-dimensionally (she's not the star, or writers other than Azzarrello don't know how to handle her yet).

So this is almost -- almost -- awesome.

And it's close enough that I can recommend it.
