IDW Goes “Gonzo”
Hunter S. Thompson’s Novel, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, To Be Adapted Into A Graphic Novel

San Diego, CA (July 19, 2013) – IDW Publishing is excited to announce it is taking a trip through bat country, adapting Hunter S. Thompson's acclaimed Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas into an original graphic novel! Grab your keys, pack your stash, and join IDW on the twisted journey in an all-new graphic experience.

The release date and creative team have yet to be determined, however IDW is committed to bringing the passionate energy of the novel to both new readers and veteran Gonzos alike. Preserving Thompson's rebellious spirit is a top priority for IDW, "I've read Thompson throughout my entire life, I'm very serious about doing this novel right," said IDW CEO/President Ted Adams. This exciting new project further explores the literary relationship between novels and comics that IDW actively pursues.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas follows Thompson on his surreal journey through Sin City. His trip was molded by the stimulants and psychedelics that mom warned you about. Influenced by the death of American counter-culture the story challenges the idea and application of the "American Dream." In 1998, Fear and Loathing was translated to film by the award-winning director Terry Gilliam and featured Johnny Depp as Raoul Duke (Thompson's alias) in the lead role.

Thompson's work has been instrumental in the development of modern American journalism appearing in Rolling Stone Magazine, The New York Times Magazine and Esquire. His trademark “Gonzo” style of writing is praised for its fluid tales laced with danger and corruption, often examining the hazards of contemporary American existence. Already renowned for their literary adaptations by best-selling authors including Stephen King Anne Rice, Cory Doctorow, George R.R. Martin, Peter S. Beagle, Harlan Ellison, Joe Hill, Richard Stark, James Patterson, and many others, IDW looks forward to capturing Thompson's distinct view of the world.

Rodar y Rodar To Adapt Alan Robert’s ‘Crawl To Me’
“The Orphanage” Producer And Director Victor Garcia To Film In Spain

San Diego, CA (July 19, 2013) – The Orphanage producer Rodar y Rodar has teamed up with Crawl to Me creator Alan Robert and his producing partners Jeff Mazzola (Descent) and Chris White (My Super Psycho Sweet 16 franchise) to adapt the critically acclaimed IDW Publishing graphic novel.

Victor Garcia, who helmed the upcoming Gallows Hill (starring Twilight’s Peter Facinelli), is in the director’s chair for the character-driven psychological horror film with a screenplay penned by TJ Cimfel and David White. Glenn Allen, Co-Founder/VFX Producer of Emmy-award winning Brainstorm Digital (Boardwalk Empire) is on board as VFX Supervisor. Producers aim to shoot interiors on a sound stage in Spain, where Rodar is based, and exteriors in Canada.

In 2011, the Crawl to Me comic book miniseries, written and illustrated by Robert, was published by award-winning IDW. The series was later collected into a graphic novel and sold out within days of its January 2012 release. IDW followed up its success with three more editions: an oversized hardcover Evil Edgar Edition, and two more top-shelf versions through their IDW Limited division.

The film takes place in an isolated country town during the frigid winter months. It centers on a young family as they cope with a series of disturbing events that force them to question their relationship, their faith and their very existence.

“Being a part of the process in making this film a reality has been an amazing journey for me,” said Robert. “We’ve built a team of incredibly talented people around this project who are all super passionate about telling this story. The dark subject matter is extremely delicate and had to be handled right. It is in excellent hands.” Robert recently announced his fourth partnership with IDW to publish his next horror series The Shunned One in 2014.

Alan Robert is repped by David Saunders/APA.

TJ Cimfel and David White are repped by Marc Manus Entertainment.
Victor Garcia is repped by Mike Goldberg/New Wave.

Joe Hill Invites You To a Holiday Party In Christmasland
Step On The Gas And Accelerate Into The Bleak Backroads Of NOS4A2!

San Diego, CA (July 19, 2013) – In a brand-new limited series that will serve as a prequel to his New York Times bestselling novel, NOS4A2, Joe Hill will be taking readers on a dark plunge into the dizzying world of Christmasland. The first comic that Hill has written since the stunning conclusion of his award-winning masterpiece Locke & Key, Wraith: Welcome to Christmasland is equal parts mystery and horror.

According to Hill, "The world of NOS4A2 is very, very big, and I only had a chance to explore a part of it in the course of the novel. I told the story I wanted to tell, but I also feel there's a lot more to discover. In NOS4A2, we learn about Charles Talent Manx the iii, who has kept himself alive for over a century by draining an essential life force out of children, warping them into giddy monsters. When he's done with them—when Charlie has what he wants—he takes them to Christmasland, where they live forever and ever in an eternal Christmas Day. They live for fun and are good at having it, whether they're playing a game of tag... or a bloody game of scissors for the drifter. In Wraith, we're going back to Christmasland at an earlier time, to find out what happens when some unlucky grown-ups find themselves on Gumdrop Lane, and Charlie's children decide to have some fun with them. It's very much a standalone story, and it's my intention to craft something that can be loved by people who have never cracked the cover of NOS4A2, while hopefully giving those who liked the book a new Charlie Manx tale to enjoy."

In Wraith: Welcome to Christmasland, Hill is joined by illustrator Charles Paul Wilson III (Stuff of Legend), who provides interior art and creepy Christmasland-themed covers, as well as by his Locke & Key partner Gabriel Rodriguez, who is providing covers for each issue. Issue 1 (re)introduces the reader to Charlie Manx, his world, and his car, a vintage 1938 Rolls Royce Wraith that runs on human souls instead of gasoline. When a luckless child falls into Charlie's grasp, her new best friend soothes her with a story: his story. From there, the series introduces a new cast of characters to Christmasland, and fully delves into its wonderfully devilish delights, as the sound of sleigh-bells ring in the background…

NOS4A2 was Joe Hill’s most accomplished novel to date, and its memorable villain Charlie Manx deserves the additional focus this series will bring,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer. “Joe and CP Wilson III have some nightmarishly clever things planned for this series, from an advent calendar-style cover to some bloody good fun on the interiors as well. The readers are really gonna get taken for a ride in this one.”

Joe Hill has made a name for himself as both a successful novelist and comic book author. Frequently publishing short stories and appearing in anthologies, Hill has rapidly become a literary force. His first novel Heart-Shaped Box won the Bram Stoker award for “Best First Novel.” His critically acclaimed comic series from IDW, Locke & Key, was recently optioned for a film by Universal Pictures, and won Hill an Eisner award for “Best Writer.”

SNL AND IDW COZY UP FOR “THE ILLEGITIMATES
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVES TARAN KILLAM MAKES HIS COMIC DEBUT!

San Diego, CA (July 19, 2013) – Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam teams up with critically-acclaimed, Harvey and Eisner nominated comic-book WRITER Marc Andreyko(Manhunter, Torso, Captain America and Bucky) to reveal just who The Illegitimates are! Announced this week on IDW Publishing’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con International, the explosive new series hits this winter!

When the world loses its greatest (and most promiscuous) super-spy, Jack Steele, a secret international espionage organization has no choice but to call in a new team to save the world, The Illegitimates! With no knowledge of the bond that ties the team together, The Illegitimates are thrust into a seedy world filled with crime, lust, and double-crosses. Each member of The Illegitimates is forced to use their unique skills to overcome their personality clashes and come together as a team.

“When Taran pitched me the high concept, I was hooked! To work with a dear friend on a brilliant idea shaving my cake and eating it, too! I couldn't be prouder of The Illegitimates!" said enthused co-writer, Marc Andreyko.

Taran Killam says, “One of my favorite genres is the Secret Agent. This comic follows the concept of the super-spy-man-slut to it’s logical conclusion. A funny jumping off point that quickly becomes deadly serious. You’re getting five spies for the price of one! Each with their own personality, perspective and specialized elite espionage-combat skill set. You know, typical dysfunctional family stuff.”

Killam and Andreyko are joined by a super-team of their own with art by Kevin Sharpe (Army of Darkness), and covers provided by the legendary artist Jerry Ordway, as well as Sharpe himself!

The Illegitimates is one of those high concepts ideas that makes you wonder why no one else ever told this story before,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “But I’m glad they didn’t, since Taran and Marc’s take on this idea is such a well-executed one. Of course an agent with a license to kill might be more concerned with staying alive through the course of his mission than paying attention to what can happen during his many conquests around the world, but that doesn’t mean those trysts won’t still have lasting repercussions, as they do here. The Illegitimates is a very fun, action-packed series we’re very happy to have under IDW’s banner.”

By adding another great creator-owned book to the slate, it’s clear that for fans of adventure comics with a twist, the place is to go is IDW!

IDW Unveils RAGNARÖK by Walter Simonson
A New Series From The Legendary Creator, Plus Star Slammers Collected!

San Diego, CA (July 19, 2013) – IDW publishing is proud to announce an all-new creator-owned series by Walter Simonson! Ragnarök will explore Simonson’s beloved Norse mythology, as well as much, much more. Coming in 2014, Ragnarök will be written and drawn by Simonson, and will feature iconic deities and classic tales with the devastatingly beautiful artwork that is synonymous with Simonson.

Scott Dunbier and I first talked about me working on a creator-owned book involving the Norse gods 15 years ago, but as many of my former editors can tell you, I've always regarded deadlines as useful fictions,” said writer/artist Walter Simonson, “So here we are... finally! All I can say is that I've loved the stories of the Viking gods since I was eight. I am thrilled that with IDW's help and support, I'm launching an ongoing series of stories built around a new vision of some old friends. And enemies.”

In addition to the brand-new series, Simonson and IDW are very pleased to announce high quality collections of Simonson’s sci-fi favorite, Star Slammers. Originally appearing in 1983, Star Slammers featured intergalactic mercenaries-for-hire who went into the business of war, and became the most successful businessmen of all time. Completely re-mastered and re-colored, the Star Slammers will be more deadly than ever! In addition to the re-mastered Star Slammers, a special Artist’s Edition of the series is planned, one that will be every bit as lovely as lovely as Simonson’s Harvey and Eisner Award-winning Thor Artist’s Edition. As with all Artist’s Editions, Star Slammers will come in an oversized hardcover format, featuring exquisite scans of Simonson’s original pages.

“My last experience with an Artist’s Edition was so positive,” said Simonson, “how could I possibly refuse when asked to do the Slammers!”

A preeminent figure in the comics community, Walter Simonson has contributed defining runs on multiple top-tier characters. His legendary runs on Thor, Fantastic Four, and Orion are considered classics of the form. Working with The Hero Initiative, helping comic creators in need of assistance, Simonson continues to inspire through his efforts on and off the page. In 2010 Simonson was presented with the Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award.

With Simonson’s newest projects, IDW is fully committed to honoring the past works of Simonson and making his newest venture his most anticipated!
