Fantagraphics Books To Publish Simon Hanselmann's Megahex

Megg, Mogg & Owl

San Diego, CA 7/20/2013 — Fantagraphics is excited to announce the acquisition of the first book by acclaimed Australian cartoonist Simon Hanselmann, to be released in the summer of 2014. Megahex will be a deluxe hardcover featuring over 200 pages of Hanselmann's beloved Megg, Mogg, and Owl comics, including over 70 never before seen pages. Hanselmann's Tumblr site Girl Mountain has already propelled Megg, Mogg, Owl & Co. to Internet infamy, and Megahex will be the solid collection those fans have long been waiting for.

Megg (a green-skinned witch), Mogg (a black cat), and Owl (an anthropomorphic owl) are a trio of ne'er-do-well roommates cohabiting in a suburban flophouse. Megg and Mogg spend most of their time smoking pot and having sex, while Owl works various office jobs and usually comes home to find himself as the butt of every joke. Behind the crass poop jokes and stoner humor are the depressed and misanthropic lives of these characters. They all possess tragedies that weigh on their shoulders, keeping them from escaping the nihilistic pit into which they've fallen. Equally funny and melancholic, Hanselmann is able to evoke empathy for his characters, making it easy for readers to fall in love with this disdainful bunch. Part Tennessee Williams, part Peter Bagge, Megahex will make people laugh, cry, and then take a shower.

"This is literally a teenage dream," explains Hanselmann, "Fantagraphics has been my favorite / the best comics publisher since forever. I've had a Fantagraphics poster hanging over my bed since I was fourteen. My brain is doing confused celebratory cartwheels."

"Simon has the deadly combination of talent and work ethic," says Fantagraphics Associate Publisher Eric Reynolds. "He has a sneaky awareness of the language of comics and a pitch perfect sense of dialogue and humor. He is almost too good to be true. The first Megg & Mogg strips I read were so effortlessly funny and fully realized that I almost couldn't believe he wasn't a pseudonym for someone more established."

Megahex is set to release in June 2014 from Fantagraphics Books, Inc.

Rogue Trooper Joins The Fight!

IDW To Release Reprints, All-New Tales Of The Genetically Modified G.I.!

San Diego, CA (July 20, 2013) – Following the success of Judge Dredd, IDW and Rebellion/2000 AD expand their thriving relationship with the addition of Rogue Trooper to their publishing slate! IDW will launch an all-new Rogue Trooper series in 2014, and also offer newly colored re-presentations of past Rogue Trooper comics, too.

Co-created by Gerry Finley-Day and renowned artist Dave Gibbons in 1981 for 2000 AD, Rogue Trooper became a showcase for some of Britain’s top artistic talent. In addition to Gibbons, Steve Dillon, Colin Wilson, Cam Kennedy, Bret Ewins, and Chris Weston have contributed art to the popular strip.

A future war has poisoned the entire atmosphere of Nu-Earth, prompting one side to create Genetic Infantrymen: blue-skinned soldiers who can breathe the toxic air, equipped with bio-chips to record their personalities in their final moments for eventual re-corporation. But a traitor sold the G.I.s out, and all but one were slaughtered. Now he stalks Nu-Earth on a mission of revenge, aided by his dead friends now “living” in his gun, helmet and backpack. He is the last G.I.—the Rogue Trooper!

"We're thrilled with IDW's plans to bring exciting new talents to another of 2000 AD's most iconic and popular series,” said Rebellion Publishing Manager, Ben Smith, “Having done such bold and successful work with Judge Dredd, we can't wait to see how Chris Ryall and his team take on comics' toughest soldier."

Classic Rogue Trooper strips will be seen in a whole new light in full-color comics and collections with hues provided by colorist Adrian Salmon, best known for his work on Doctor Who and Judge Dredd. The all-new series in the offing will follow the tradition of IDW’s successful Judge Dredd series by Duane Swierczynski and Nelson Daniel. Creator names and details will follow at a later date.

With a rich history to build upon, IDW will add to the proven franchise, bringing Rogue Trooper into the 21st century for an all-new audience.

Nemo Returns To Slumberland With Brand-New Dreams
All-Star Creative Team To Revisit The Celebrated Classic!

San Diego, CA (July 20, 2013) – As one of the most influential comic strips of all time, Winsor McCay’s Little Nemo in Slumberland™ could only return if a creative team with a true affinity for McCay’s vision was found. Today, IDW announced that multiple Eisner Award-winning writer/artist Eric Shanower (Age of Bronze), will be writing an all-new series exploring Nemo’s amazing dreams. Joining Shanower will be none other than Locke & Key co-creator and Eisner-nominated artist, Gabriel Rodriguez!

Little Nemo in Slumberland first appeared in the New York Herald in 1905 as a weekly comic strip by creator Winsor McCay. Over the next two decades, McCay’s unprecedented vision followed the fantastic dreams of Nemo. Encountering strange characters, Nemo traversed the world of his dreams, often finding himself in bizarre and often surreal locales. Little Nemo survives as both a nostalgic and innovative work of fiction.

“I've loved Winsor McCay's Little Nemo in Slumberland ever since I first saw examples of the strip when I was a kid,” said writer Eric Shanower, “McCay's masterpiece is clearly a hard act to follow, and there's no way that Gabe and I can duplicate McCay's personal vision. But we're doing our best to tap into Slumberland's essence while bringing our own strengths to it. I think there's a good chance admirers of McCay's original will enjoy our riff on it.”

“There are people like Ray Bradbury, Neil Gaiman, Hayao Miyazaki and Winsor McCay, that can grasp what dreams are made of, transform them, and share that with all of us,” said Gabriel Rodríguez. “I think we’re lucky that McCay not only left us his wonderful stories, but also created a whole universe filled with windows opened for every one of us, inviting us to explore it, too. And Eric and I are taking the challenge, not trying to redo what he previously did, but trying to invite kids and adults from today to enjoy and have fun in of the Land of Wonderful Dreams.”

Debuting next spring, Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland will see Nemo embark on a brand-new voyage in the familiar surroundings of Slumberland. However, everything else is different, even Nemo himself—in search of a new playmate for the princess of Slumberland, King Morpheus enlists the Candy Kid to help bring the latest playmate, our titular Nemo, into the dream realm. There, Nemo embarks on a visceral journey full of adventure and danger.

“It feels odd to think of Gabriel Rodriguez working on anything but Locke & Key, the series that he’s illustrated since 2007, but if anything is worthy of being his next project, it’s re-envisioning McCay’s Slumberland alongside another brilliantly talented creator like Eric Shanower,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “The two of them together will create captivating magic on every comic page, and Eric and Gabe’s take on the story promises to inspire some dreams all their own, much the way McCay’s work did a century ago.”

Eric Shanower has captivated readers with his epic and multiple Eisner Award-winning series Age of Bronze, and his ambitious, Eisner Award-winning adaptations of L. Frank Baum’s Oz novels with artist Skottie Young. Gabriel Rodriguez’s beautiful and intricate style has graced the Eisner-winning series Locke & Key, written by Joe Hill, since 2007.

SOMETHING STRANGE FROM DAVE SIM!
THE HIGHLY ANITCIPATED SERIES THE STRANGE DEATH OF ALEX RAYMOND FINDS A HOME AT IDW

San Diego, CA (July 20, 2013) – Prolific creator Dave Sim’s meta-adventure through the history of photo-realistic artwork, the career and death of Alex Raymond, and much more, will be published by IDW! Sim’s originally self-published work is being completely remastered, redrawn, and reworked before it sees release as its own 18-issue series.

About the project, the A Moment of Cerebus Web site said: “Originally serialized within the pages of the self-published Glamourpuss #1-26 (2008-2012), The Strange Death Of Alex Raymond is an as yet uncompleted work-in-progress in which Dave Sim investigates the history of photorealism in comics, specifically focusing on the work of comic-strip artist Alex Raymond the circumstances of his death on 6 September 1956 at the wheel of fellow artist Stan Drake’s Corvette.”

“It’s not much of a secret that we’re big Dave Sim fans at IDW,” said Ted Adams, Publisher and CEO. “He’s done an absolute ton of covers for us lately, each one more dynamic than the last. Add in the other Sim projects we have in the pipeline, such as the Complete Book of Cerebus Covers, the digital/audio version of High Society and The Complete Zootanapuss Artist’s Edition, the time seemed right to launch a full blown creator-owned title and take our relationship to the next level.”

Dave Sim’s distinguished career in comics began with his self-published hit Cerebus. An essential series that evolved through grounded and mature subject material, Cerebus is a modern classic that catalyzed Sim’s career as well as the comics industry on the whole. As a vocal proponent of self-publishing, Sim has spent much of his career improving and exploring his craft through his own self-published projects. More recently, Sim has contributed his iconic style to various covers at IDW, including The Colonized, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, and Doctor Who

IDW is pleased to explore new territory with Sim on this personal and important project, The Strange Death of Alex Raymond.

Sam Kieth’s The Maxx is back!
IDW Returns To The Groundbreaking Series In Multiple Formats

San Diego, CA (July 1, 2013) – Sam Kieth’s The Maxx was a runaway sensation when initially published. Kieth’s exquisite artistry and quirky stories resonated with readers who had never seen anything quite like it before. Exploring the strange relationship between two realities, The Maxx follows the dual identities of a man caught between the real world and a heroic fantasy realm called The Outback. The Maxx ran for more than 30 issues and inspired a popular animated show on MTV.

Now, 20 years later, the striking series is returning to comic shops with fully re-mastered and re-colored printings of the classic stories, and all supervised by Kieth to ensure the highest possible quality. The Maxx: Maxximized will also feature brand-new painted covers by Kieth Additionally, IDW will—for the first time ever—release a series of hardcover Maxx collections. And if that wasn’t enough, there will also be Artist’s Editions enabling readers to finally see Sam’s beautiful and delicate line work as they never have before.

“I want to thank my pal Ted Adams,” said Sam Kieth, “for giving me and some of my books a home at IDW… I hope he doesn’t lose his shirt!”

“Sam, as usual, is self deprecating to a fault,” said editor Scott Dunbier, “he’s an amazing artist and a good friend, and I could not be happier to have him at IDW.”

Kieth will also create a set of three comprehensive new art books called The Worlds of Sam Kieth that will showcase his incredible powers as an artist, but also tell the story of who he is and how he came to be the artist he is. The first volume is debuting at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International.

The original artist on Sandman, which he co-created with Neil Gaiman, Kieth’s enchanted style quickly grabbed the attention of readers, and his success allowed him to explore his own creations with The Maxx and Ojo. While his career in comics has found him working on some of the most iconic characters, he is arguably best known for creating The Maxx, and IDW is looking forward to being intimately involved in the next chapter of this classic character’s legacy.

Parker Will Return in Slayground!
Darwyn Cooke’s Newest Adaptation Coming In December

San Diego, CA (July 20, 2013) – Darwyn Cooke’s acclaimed Parker series from IDW continues to expand with the classic Slayground. In this newest graphic novel, Parker is put to the test against crooked cops and sleazy gangsters after a heist goes south and he finds himself trapped in an amusement park closed for the winter, and embroiled in a deadly game of cat and mouse… a game that slowly starts to favor the mouse.

“A boarded up amusement park was an inspired setting for Parker,” said writer/artist Darwyn Cooke, “and Westlake made the most of it. A great story that I’m enjoying the hell out of adapting.”

Based on the influential novels by Richard Stark, AKA, Donald Westlake, Parker is a coldly calculating master criminal, one with a very rigid code. The IDW adaptations by Darwyn Cooke of The Hunter and The Outfit have received multiple Eisner and Harvey  awards. The Score, released last year, is nominated for an Eisner Award at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con International. Slayground will be the fourth Parker adaptation in the popular and much lauded series.

Darwyn Cooke’s distinct style has made him a premier writer and artist in the comic book industry. A former animator, Cooke entered mainstream comics in 2000 with his critical hit Batman: Ego for DC Comics.

Donald Westlake, writing as Richard Stark, was the acclaimed author of the Parker series. He was a three-time Edgar Award winner, as well as being named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America, that prestigious societies highest honor.

Comic-Con International: San Diego

San Diego, CA – July 19, 2013 – The world of comics was abuzz at Comic-Con International: San Diego as the Holy Grail of comic books — an original copy of ACTION COMICS #1, featuring the first appearance of the world’s most iconic Super Hero, Superman — made a rare appearance as the guest of honor, along with Man of Steel star Henry Cavill and director Zack Snyder, at a party celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Superman. Widely considered to be the genesis of the superhero genre, ACTION COMICS #1 — an original on loan from the personal collection of musician Jack White (The White Stripes, The Racounteurs, The Dead Weather) arrived under heavy security to the star-studded Comic-Con event sponsored by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Entertainment.

“There wouldn’t be a Comic-Con without ACTION COMICS #1 and Superman so it’s fitting that we’re honoring the comic book that started it all here in San Diego,” stated Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment. “It’s been a year filled with milestones for Superman – while we celebrate 75 years of entertainment from the world’s first Super Hero, the global success of Man of Steel proves Superman is more relevant than ever.”

Famed musician Jack White loaned his original, 1938 issue of ACTION COMICS #1 to DC Entertainment for use at the event, stating, “ACTION COMICS #1 is an important piece of history. Instead of keeping my comic locked inside a vault I want to share it with fans during key moments like Superman’s 75th anniversary, much like fine art is shared in museums.”

ACTION COMICS #1 made a grand entrance at the event, complete with a Brinks security truck delivery following a hand-off from Tornado Comics, a comic retailer that helped facilitate the appearance in San Diego. The comic was displayed in a special, “speeding bullet-proof” display case made specifically for the event, allowing guests to get an up-close look at what many consider to be the most valuable comic of all time.

In addition to the landmark appearance of ACTION COMICS #1, the San Diego celebration honoring Superman was a dazzling event at the Hard Rock Hotel, with guests including Man of Steel star Henry Cavill, Man of Steel director Zack Snyder, DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson,DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, among many others. The event is part of a year-long celebration honoring 75 years of Superman that includes a commemorative logo, and a new, animated short that pays homage to Superman and the many iterations of the Super Hero throughout his 75 years. The animated short is produced by Zack Snyder and will be released later this year.

Superman fans attending Comic-Con International: San Diego can attend a special panel “Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment: Superman's 75th Anniversary Celebration” on Saturday, July 20 at 4:15pm in room 6A. Panelists include Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman), Tim Daly (Superman: The Animated Series), Jim Lee (DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and artist for SUPERMAN UNCHAINED), Jack Larson (the original Jimmy Olsen from Adventures of Superman), talent from Man of Steel, and many more.

  • By Paul Montgomery

“This is the most ambitious thing I’ve ever done,” says Rick Remender of “Ragnarok Now!”, a culmination of everything broiling in UNCANNY AVENGERS.

Fittingly, Remender will be partnering with Steve McNiven, the artist behind Marvel’s CIVIL WAR, to punish the Avengers Unity squad for their constant infighting. All those squabbles haven’t gone unnoticed by the likes of the Red Skull, Kang the Conqueror, and the Apocalypse Twins. Now Death comes calling.

What began in the inaugural arc of UNCANNY X-FORCE reaches a fever pitch in November. Remender considers the initial 10 issues of UNCANNY AVENGERS as a first act, a series of inciting incidents rife with character interaction and the seeding of plot. As McNiven joins ranks with UNCANNY AVENGERS #14, a band of heroes faces the consequence of failing to behave heroically.

“They’ve allowed personal differences and petty rivalries, all of the things we humans allow to create conflict amongst us, to fester,” reflects Remender. “If I’m in that world, watching these people who are bestowed all of these wonderful powers, these gods and mutants and spider-men and Inhumans and all of this wonderful craziness, why can’t they get along? Why are they fighting again? Especially when there are such stakes. That’s what humans do, though. We butt heads.”

The primary instigators include Captain America and Wolverine—at odds over Wolverine’s murderous tactics involving Apocalypse in UNCANNY X-FORCE—as well as Rogue and Scarlet Witch—still seething over M Day. For Remender, gray remains the boldest hue on the palette.

    Uncanny Avengers by Steve McNiven

“One of the things I’ve worked towards here is to give everyone on the team a unique perspective,” he says. “It’s all nuanced. We as human beings want to categorize things as black and white, good and bad, hero and villain, but it’s never really that way. The examination of these characters and their disagreements in these first 10 issues is an attempt to spotlight that. I could argue the Wolverine point of view. I could argue the Cap point of view. I have to, if I’m going to write them correctly. Who’s right and who’s wrong? I have opinions. Ultimately it comes down to context.

“Wolverine maybe shouldn’t be an Avenger. Wolverine is a murderer, which goes against what the Avengers are all about in Cap and Wasp and Wonder Man’s minds. On the other hand, maybe Wolverine is the person, because he’s got this blackened soul and is willing to take a life when it’s necessary, maybe he’s done the hard thing and saved the Earth.”

While the writer attempts to find the merit in each character’s argument, even forcing himself to commiserate with the Red Skull for that harrowing screed, the Avengers continue to back themselves into individual corners, unwilling to compromise.

“‘Ragnarok Now!’ is the consequences,” says Remender. “‘Ragnarok Now!’ is what happens because they can’t get it together, can’t unify, can’t make good on the promise of the Unity Squad to live up to the ideals of Charles Xavier. I’m excited to get to this point to punish them all for their bad behavior.”

And he promises to make it personal. A few of the Apocalypse Twin’s selections for their Four Horsemen of Death roster represent key failures from the Avengers’ past. Wolverine put his son Daken down like a problem dog. Plagued by personal demons, the Sentry died at the hands of Thor. Rogue will be forced to contend with the recently slain Grim Reaper, a man she inadvertently killed with the use of his brother Wonder Man’s powers. Felled in his efforts against Vulcan, Banshee won’t likely harbor much good will toward Havok.

Remender also stresses that while these Death avatars may be driven by Celestial Death Seeds, they function as much more than mere zombies.

“That seed has an evolutionary prerogative and is pushing him in some strange directions,” he says of the resurrected Sentry, “How his crazy brain that still wants to be noble, still thinks he’s a good guy, perceives these messages and decodes all of this—and the conclusions it comes to—are incredibly fun.”

“Getting to pay this stuff out with some Steve McNiven artwork and kill a bunch of people, destroy a bunch of stuff, lay waste to a whole lot of things—I’m pretty excited.”

    By Jim Beard

This November the man who would one day be called Wolverine returns to civilization in ORIGIN II, a new limited series by writer Kieron Gillen and artist Adam Kubert, which promises not only a continuation of the story set down in 2001’s classic ORIGIN, but will also reveal new details of the early days of Logan, born James Howlett.

“The last we saw of James was disappearing into the woods with wolves at the end of ORIGIN,” says Gillen. “That's where he's been ever since. He runs with a family pack, and has completely removed himself from human civilization. He's found a kind of peace. He's found a kind of family. The first scene is him, with the pack, hunting. The opening is really raw; I talk about the period novel feel a lot, but I have a sort of ‘Jack London with modern research’ approach to the wolves. Hell, the whole structure does owe a little to ‘White Fang.’

“The first issue is sort of an Overture for the whole grander piece. Logan in the woods with the wolves, and what disturbs that pastoral idyll. But I dare say the most important thing is the origin of the hatred between him and his greatest enemy.”

The writer insists that readers need nothing in advance to be able to pick up the series and dive into its secrets, that it can be enjoyed on its own beyond its predecessor.

“We tell you everything you need to know,” Gillen explains. “I'm writing ORIGIN II as a novel in the Marvel Universe, which builds everything from its opening scenario. I'm writing it so that if you know the Marvel Universe, you'll see the wider implications—and the wider implications are enormous—and the occasional soft nod, but if you just pick this off the shelves, you'll have a perfect experience.”

At the book’s core strides the man who later becomes Wolverine of the X-Men, on a path toward his destiny but still being shaped by larger events out of his control. Gillen calls it a story about “a fundamental step towards the sort of man he becomes.”

    portrait_medium.jpg
Origin II promo by Adam Kubert

“The animal versus the man is always a Wolverine theme, and that's right towards the forefront,” he notes. “But the book—set just into this century, with [World War I] looming on the horizon—doesn't exactly let our civilized virtues off. You've never seen wolves mustard gas their enemies, y'know? In ORIGIN, we've seen James deal with anger. He's killed accidentally. But he's never had to deal with a berserker rage, the true extend of his capacity for monstrosity.

“That'd be interesting. And I hope you find our answer interesting too.”

Readers of ORIGIN II may also expect to learn more about one of the X-Men’s greatest foes, Mister Sinister, in its pages.

“This is a good example of what I mean by [the series] being self-contained,” Gillen says. “Nathaniel Essex has the sort of background that keeps Wikipedia editors at work forever. His appearance in ORIGIN II entirely fits into his personal chronology, but for those who don't know anything about him will treat him as he appears, as in, a disgraced London scientist moving into increasingly unethical areas, discovering a strange new species for the first time. One of the working titles for ORIGIN II was ‘Origin of the Species.’ Read into that as you will.

“What kind of man [is Essex]? Not a nice one, to say the least. Those who read my UNCANNY X-MEN run will see one take on my Sinister there, who was a flamboyant self-made creature of science. That's not the Nathaniel Essex you'll find in ORIGIN II. This is a century earlier, before he entirely reconstructed himself into that creature. He's grim, hard, awesomely clever and absolutely without ethics.”

Aiding and abetting the writer on the book will be Adam Kubert, an artist who knows his way around the Marvel Universe and Wolverine. Gillen calls his experience with Kubert on ORIGIN II “amazing.”

“I've loved his work forever, and I've tried to leave as much room [for it] as possible,” he insists. “I'm writing in a similar script-style to YOUNG AVENGERS, where I've done the more grounded scenes in full-script, before segueing into Marvel-method for the action sequences to let Adam really take lead. When I heard that he was heading down to the natural history museum to draw some of the wolves was a ‘this is all going to turn out great’ sort of moment.

Overall, in his own unique way, Gillen tries to explain what it feels like to follow up and expand upon one of the most popular comic stories of all time.

“I feel like I've been running naked through a forest to find myself at an isolated peak,” he says. “I cast one glance at the icy waters below, and throw myself off, screaming for the joy of being alive, with only my eyes betraying the true terror.”
