Spider-Man back in the MCU

... at least for one movie.

HERE'S the story from NBC news.

tl;dr version: He's back for at least one more movie, but no more details than that were shared. Here's the best quote, from Kevin Feige:

"Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe," Feige added. "He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spider-verse, you never know what surprises the future might hold."

That last bit could be pure fluffery, or it could presage other things -- like perhaps Venom in the MCU, That was the first thing that popped into my head, as it seems easily do-able and Venom is already established. BUt who knows? Maybe Sony's price is that the MCU develop characters like Morbius and then release them back to Sony for sequels (which obviously would drop any MCU references).

I don't know -- I mean, really don't know -- if Marvel Studios would be willing to do that. I'd be vaguely against it, as it would build Sony's Spider-verse into something lucrative and standalone, and of course, I want to see Spidey back at Marvel Studios badly, even it means Sony Films goes bankrupt.

OTOH, a continuing schism does actually mirror the comics, where Spider-Man didn't join the Avengers until the 1980s. It was always Stan Lee's contention that Spidey works best as an alienated outsider, and that giving him mainstream MU acceptance would damage the character. A continuing distance between Spidey and the rest of the MCU actually kinda addresses that.

But times change, and Spidey isn't an alienated loner any more. So I'd still rather see Peter pick his peck of pickled peppers in the MCU, rather than at Sony.
