Diamond Announces Top Products For June 2013

(BALTIMORE, MD) — (July 5, 2013) — Out of control satellites and a government conspiracy pose new challenges for the Man of Steel in Scott Snyder and Jim Lee's Superman Unchained #1 from DC Comics, the best-selling comic book to specialty retailers in June 2013, according to information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors, the world's largest distributor of comics, graphic novels, and pop culture merchandise.

Marvel Comics was June's leading publisher with a 32.77% market share in retail dollars and a 38.29% market share in units. DC Entertainment was second with a 29.57% share in dollars and a 32.03% share in units. June's comics sales declined slightly from May, a five week month. Second quarter print sales were up over the first quarter by nearly 5%, and year-to-date print sales are up nearly 12% over 2012..

Rick Grimes and his band of survivors must adjust to life under Negan's rule in Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead Volume 18: What Comes After from Image Comics, the best-selling graphic novel in June.

Michonne, the fan-favorite character from Kirkman's The Walking Dead, unleashed her fury and her katana on two walkers in McFarlane Toys' The Walking Dead: Michonne Resin Statue, the best-selling toy product to comic book specialty retailers in June.

Designed for retailers' HeroClix tournaments within their stores, NECA/WizKids' Marvel HeroClix: Fear Itself Month 2 Organized Play Kit, based on the Marvel Comics crossover event of 2011, was the best-selling games product to comic book specialty retailers in June.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world. The account base includes brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, Internet merchants, and other specialty stores.

Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.

The June 2013 comics sales estimates now appear on Comichron:
(As usual, permission is granted for news sites to republish the analysis post in part or whole with attribution, byline, and links intact. The Comichron estimate page should be linked to, but not republished, as my estimate documents are perpetual works in progress, always being revised as I get new information. Linking to my page makes sure your readers always see the most up-to-date version.)
Additionally, for the first time in a couple of years (!), ALL the across-time sales performance graphics have been updated on the site.
SALES, ENTIRE DIAMOND EXCLUSIVE ERA: http://www.comichron.com/vitalstatistics/alltime.html
The remarkable thing about these charts — as seen in the analysis post — is the almost mirror image turn-around before and after the summer of 2011, and the DC relaunch. (Seriously, I had to look at the 2010-2013 unit sales chart to see if I hadn't accidentally flopped the existing 2008-2011 chart!)
That's it. Heading to Comic-con next week to promote my upcoming Star Wars novel, Kenobi; for any comics-industry-related inquiries for your pre- and post-con reportage, contact me via this address.
