Lightbox Expo (Sept. 11-12)

This weekend, LightBox Expo Online will host a stunning lineup of more than 400 guests and 300+ presentations for an international celebration of the visual arts. Celebrated character designer and illustrator Bobby Chiu (Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland) and Emerald City Comic Con founder Jim Demonakos — the LightBox Expo co-founders —have created a multi-faceted, online experience for everyone from aspiring artists and students, to professionals and fans, with a focus on animation, illustration and concept art. The event will be held at www.lightboxexpo.com from Friday, September 11, 2020 through Sunday, September 13.

LightBox Expo Online will feature acclaimed animators, designers, and illustrators, including Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Andy Park and Anthony Francisco, Oscar winner Everett Downing (co-director of Hair Love), Rona Liu (production designer at Pixar Animation Studios), James Gurney (creator of Dinotopia), HELLBOY creator Mike Mignola, Spectrum Grand Master 2018 Claire Wendling, Natalie Hall (artist on The Shape of Water), Loish (internet influencer), the animator, painter, and designer Jorge R. Gutiérrez (The Book of Life), and comic book artists, including John Giang, Sanford Greene, Kim Jung Gi, Mindy Lee, Scott Campbell and William Stout.

“Bobby and I realized we had the opportunity to re-invent LightBox Expo, following last fall’s incredible launch in Pasadena,” said Convention Director, Jim Demonakos. “The best part of this virtual event is that we can include artists and designers from around the globe, many of whom may have otherwise been unable to attend. At the same time, we’re using the site to create a robust experience for attendees who want to learn more about the process of creating art.”

The Concept Art Awards is the first of its kind to recognize and bring increased awareness of the role of concept artists throughout the world of movies, television, video games, VR and more. This year’s Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented to creator and Co-Founder of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away) and legendary fantasy artist Brian Froud (The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth). Miyazaki will attend the award ceremony, via a video presentation.

Daily Planet intern Clark Kent takes learning-on-the-job to new extremes when Lobo and Parasite set their sights on Metropolis in Superman: Man of Tomorrow, the next entry in the popular series of DC Universe Movies. Superman: Man of Tomorrow introduces a new producing vision to the DC Universe Movies series, which now numbers 41 films over its 13 years of existence. Supervising Producer Butch Lukic has a rich pedigree in DC animated productions, serving as producer on Constantine: City of Demons, Justice League Action and the Batman Unlimited franchise, as well as directing episodes of Justice League, Batman Beyond and Beware the Batman. Today DC proudly announced a new digital-first series, Represent!, launching with “It’s a Bird” by Christian Cooper, Alitha E. Martinez, Mark Morales, Emilio Lopez, and Rob Clark Jr. This first chapter is available now, offered for free on participating digital platforms including readdc.com, Comixology, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and more. Additional chapters of Represent! will be available digitally in 2021.

“This digital series is designed to showcase and introduce creators traditionally underrepresented in the mainstream comic book medium,” said executive editor Marie Javins. “We’ll highlight both new and familiar voices, beginning with ‘It’s a Bird’ by writer Christian Cooper and artist Alitha E. Martinez, a semi-fictionalized account of Christian’s very real evolution from a kid with a pair of binoculars to a man in an unexpected media spotlight after an altercation with a woman walking her dog in Central Park.”

In Cooper and Martinez’s story, Jules, a Black teenager, is given a pair of old binoculars as he heads out for a morning of bird-watching. “I hope young people read it in particular, and that they’re inspired to keep the focus where it needs to be, which is on those we have lost and how we keep from losing more,” said Cooper, while Martinez added, “I wish this story could have been that punctuation of, ‘…and we all lived happily ever after.’ But it just keeps coming.”

Ice Cream Man Presents Quarantine Comix Special #1

In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ice Cream Man creators W. Maxwell Prince and Martín Morazzo launched an online-only series of mini-comics set in the ICM universe. The collection of these stories, Ice Cream Man Presents: Quarantine Comix #1, will be available in print for the first time from Image Comics this September.

These strange little ditties were originally meant to tide folks over while the industry was on pause—and also raise money for struggling comic shops; 50 percent of all digital proceeds were donated to Comicbook United Fund/BINC Foundation.

Now, collected into print format, this is an extra-length collection of all six issues of these Quarantine Comix, featuring brand-new cover art and bonus stories by guest creators. And, as before, 50 percent of creator profits will go to Comicbook United Fund/BINC Foundation to help stores get back on their feet—because comic shops are sweet.

Ryan Estrada is an artist/adventurer who has traveled the globe and currently resides in South Korea. He mostly writes and draws webcomics, but he also writes prose. He is the author of BANNED BOOK CLUB (with Kim Hyun Sook), POORCRAFT: WISH YOU WERE HERE, Learn to Read Korean in 15 Minutes, Ryan Made Mistakes, Broken Telephone, Aki Alliance, and many other comics.

Axur Eneas won Mexico’s National Young Graphic Novelist Award in 2017 for his books Este Comic no es Arte and Dibuja una Casa. He has been a colorist for Sonic the Hedgehog (Penguin), a designer for the animated feature Top Cat Begins, and an illustrator for the series Amalteado.
