Note:  Much as I enjoy working on the Earth-44 timeline, I can imagine that for the casual reader, it may be a bit much to take in, being something of a massive wall of text. I've decided to try to do something that is somewhat more limited in scope. I'm also going to format it differently, in hopes of making it somewhat more accessible to the general readership of the board. Please do let me know how it works for you.

The following, while derived from the Earth-44 timeline, is going to be limited to those characters popularly known as "super-heroes", with a few "mystery men" thrown in.   There may be one or two characters in here that may not fit your definition of a "super-hero". For this I offer no apology, but I welcome discussion as to whether or not a given character fits your personal definition.  I plan to update this daily if I can, and annotate it as I go along.

Sorry if I'm nitpicking but:

  • No Doc Savage?
  • Zatara also first appeared in Action Comics #1.
  • The Crimson Avenger predates Batman, debuting in Detective Comics #20 (O'38)
  • Doll Man came before the majority of DC's heroes in Feature Comics #27 (D'39)
  • Could you please clarify the time shift for Aquaman and Mera. As far as I know, the Golden Age Sea King had no other identity so he might not have been Arthur Curry.

But wow, this is impressive!

Not nitpicking at all, good points.

1)I thought about Doc Savage, but wasn't sure whether he constituted a "super-hero" or not. On reflection, I figure he comes close enough to add, so I did.  I also added Asterix the Gaul, Popeye the Sailor and the Shadow.

2)Added Zatara, can't believe I missed him. I wonder what a meeting between Zatara and Mandrake would be like.

3)Corrected the Crimson Avenger.

4)Corrected Doll Man

5)As for Aquaman - I confess to ignorance about the character's Golden Age adventures. I thought he'd always been "Arthur Curry".  While we're speaking of Atlanteans, I'll take thiss moment to say that I always supposed them to be much longer-lived than surface-dwellers, probably because Namor certainly doesn't seem to have aged (or grown up) much over the last 70-odd years.  I've kind of projected that assumption onto DC's Atlanteans as well, without any justification.

But wow, this is impressive!

Thanks!

  • Would you consider the "death" of the Comet an event? It was certainly rare for the Golden Age.
  • Was Captain America frozen in your timeline?
  • Roy Thomas had Helena Wayne born in 1957, not 1956. I remember because she and I share the same birthday.
  • Shouldn't Hercules (or a multitude of them) be included?
  • Also the wizard Shazam was the heroic Champion thousands of years in the past.
  • Nice that you had Clark Kent acknowledge Linda Lee as his cousin, something that never happened in the comics. As if simply having a cousin would endanger his secret identity!

I was not aware of the death of the Comet. One of those characters I don't know much about.

  • Was Captain America frozen in your timeline?

Yes. there will be an "event" for Cap coming up in the 70's.

  • Roy Thomas had Helena Wayne born in 1957, not 1956. I remember because she and I share the same birthday.

I didn't know that. The 1956 date was a guess on my part.

  • Shouldn't Hercules (or a multitude of them) be included?

Herc is out there in 1965. I went with the Marvel Hercules, a favorite of mine.

  • Also the wizard Shazam was the heroic Champion thousands of years in the past.

Interesting. I never thought of him in those terms.

  • Nice that you had Clark Kent acknowledge Linda Lee as his cousin, something that never happened in the comics. As if simply having a cousin would endanger his secret identity!

Yeah, I can see why the writers did that, but it did make Clark look like he didn't want this brat cramping his style.

Although I haven't spelled it out here, (and I don't insist on it as an article of canon) I imagine that as the Kents started having kids, they moved back to Smallville so the kids could grow up in the same environment that Clark did, on the old Kent family homestead.

Moved Helena's birth to 1957.

The Comet first appeared in Pep Comics #1 (Ja'40) where scientist John Dickering injected weird gases into his bloodstream that gave him "disolvo-vision" which he used to disintegrate his foes in every story. And the police knew all about it and who he really was!

In a first for comics, the Comet was shot dead in Pep #17 (Jl'41) in front of his brother Bob who became the equally violent though non-powered Hangman.

The Comet would return in The Adventures of the Fly #30 (O'64), returning from an alien world with new powers, a mustache and a strong desire for Fly-Girl! But he still had his questionable fashion sense!

But it does make you wonder if the Comet had made it to December of '41, would he been allowed to go vaporize Nazis and the Imperial Japanese?

Interesting.  Was the Comet the first super-hero killed in action?
