I'm unfamiliar with this story.

 This is referring to the great song El Paso, by Marty Robbins. It was a big hit on the radio in 1959.

How, in the name of G-d and all that's holy, is it possible to have NEVER seen Law & Order?

• It was on the air for 20 years (1990-2010).
• It had a TV movie (Exiled: A Law & Order Movie).
• It had six spinoffs (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit; Law & Order: Criminal Intent; Law & Order: Trial By Jury; Law & Order: Los Angeles; and Deadline and Conviction).
• It has one spinoff on the way (Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders).
• It has foreign versions set in England (Law & Order: UK), France (Paris enquêtes criminelles or “Paris Criminal Investigations”) and Russia (Закон и порядок: отдел оперативных расследований or “Law & Order: Division of Field Investigation” and Закон и порядок. Преступный умысел or “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”).
• It is perpetually rerun on at least three channels (currently WEtv, Sundance and TNT), not to mention various local stations.
• Its No. 1 spinoff, Law & Order: SVU, is closing in on 20 years and is still a top ratings-getter for NBC.

Now, I would get it if you were, say, in a remote outpost in Antarctica where there’s no television signal and there’s nothing around but snow and penguins. But how could you have never watched a show that’s been all over the TV landscape for the entirety of the 21^st century – and 10 years before that?

That's true. I never regularly watched any of the Law & Order shows or Hill Street Blues or the CSI franchise.

Well, yeah ... I never saw Everybody Loves Raymond during the entire time it was live (and find myself appalled at what I see anytime I make the mistake of watching a rerun). I've hardly ever watched the CSI shows. (As for Hill Street Blues, I've seen 'em all. I never missed it.*) I get that there are any number of things one hasn't watched, owing to anything from lack of opportunity to lack of interest.

But there IS no lack of opportunity for Law & Order! It's ALWAYS on!

In fact, I once read in TV Guide that Jesse L. Martin -- an old Broadway song-and-dance man -- once made up vocalese lyrics to the "Theme from Law & Order." They go like this:

I've never seen Law & Order, but Richard Belzer's character turned up in an X-Files.

Richard Belzer's character John Munch began on Homicide: Life on the Street. He set a record that will never likely be broken of playing the same character on more separate TV series than any other actor.

Richard Belzer's character Detective John Munch first appeared on Homicide: Life on the Street, and participated in all three of the crossovers that show had with original Law & Order. After Homicide was canceled, Belzer proposed that Munch join original L&O, but they had just brought Jesse L. Martin aboard and didn't want to cut him. Too bad; Belzer and Jerry Orbach had great chemistry together. I could gladly watch those two guys all day.

So, instead, Munch was added to the cast of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, where he stayed for the first 15 seasons. Producers wrote him out by having Munch retire. Nicely, among the guests at his retirement party were one of his three brothers, two of his four ex-wives, and his old partner from the Baltimore P.D., Meldrick Lewis.

Munch has appeared on 10 TV shows, spanning 20 years. Here's a list from Wikipedia: "John Munch: Appearances and Crossovers".
