The Simpsons characters debuted in 1987 as part of The Tracy Ullman Show. Dan Castellaneta (Homer) and Julie Kavner (Marge) were also playing live-action characters on the show. Following its burgeoning popularity, The Simpsons became a separate show in 1989 while still continuing to appear on the Ullman show.
