A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

Discussion and voting on future monthly themes takes place on the "Nominations, Themes and Statistics for A Cover A Day" thread.  Click here to view the thread.

  • I can't end on a duplicate.  They do sort of blend together after a while.  Here are a few from not just a jungle princess, but the Queen of the Jungle.  One of these has to one that hasn't been posted yet.

I guess that these jungle adventure covers are intrinsically unmemorable.  My impression is that we've had an unusually high number of duplicates posted this month!  (Which may help to explain why we've definitely got the highest number of pages to date for this subject)

Was every woman who ventured into the jungle in the 1940s and 1950s issued with a standard garment before being allowed out?

  • I guess I should really end with a DC cover.  That's who comes to mind first with the category of "ape covers."  Here's one more with Beppo.  Okay, technically a monkey.

  • That appears to be a gorilla behind Dracula's shoulder, and so Jughead manages to bridge the Apes of September with October's mad houses and creepy cemeteries:

  • Nice one, JD!

I've posted my last cover of the month, leaving about a couple of dozen in hand that seemed to be too repetitive or uninteresting to be worth using.  However, a comment on the "Tips on Using the Board" discussion has just helped me to work out how it's still possible to include animated emojis in comments.

And there's one that needs to be posted before September ends!

  • I'll sign out of September with a couple of bridges across to December - in other words Ape covers from foreign language comics. This first cover is from Brazil.

  • And the next is from Germany.

  • And I'll sign off with this last one, given that it's 11.35pm here.  See you all in October!

    • October 2019 - Haunted houses and graves.

  • I have to start with this one. What a moving and evocative cover this was!
