I sincerely hope that Ultimate Spider-Man II is accepted and is given a chance to develop. Unfortunate to have an "alternate world" label on him, though. A bit too Spider-Man 2099 for my taste.
I would prefer that this new Spider-Man, and I cannot call him Spidey as we don't know him that well, have no ties to Peter Parker, Ultimate or otherwise. Aunt May and Mary Jane should not be involved. He should start fresh and fight non-Spider-Foes, no Doctor Octopus or Green Goblin. Be original (besides the name) or don't bother.
DNACOLT - Would it have been more original for the Ultimate Spider-man to continue forever, like his MU counterpart while time and growth in his world becomes meaningless and each of his 'stakes are higher than ever before' battles with the same villains become even more meaningless?
I can't fault Storyteller Bendis for telling a story. Originality is taking his readers along a path they haven't been on before. Ultimate Spider-man is Bendis' story to tell as best he sees fit. Once he's written and published it might be a bettertime to sneer at it, assuming it merits the sneers.
I'll never forget the year I had a student look at one of my four plush super-heroes in my classroom, the Green Lantern Hal Jordan one, and say, "I thought Green Lantern was black?" I LOVED that. HIS Green Lantern was black, from the cartoon.
