BEWARE of SCAM ARTISTS

I got hit by a SCAM artist today.  had to take quick action, contacted my bank, their "Lost or Stolen ATM or Debit Card" section, their "Identity theft unit" for info, and then put out 30-day alerts with Trans Union and Check Systems.  Boy am I pissed.

Anyway, my ATM card is locked, and the bank is issuing me a new number.

The short form:  NEVER give out ANY info on the phone to someone who calls YOU.  EVER.

Like I wasn't having a miserable enough day already...

  • Sorry to hear that, Henry. What was the nature of the scam phone call, if you don't mind sharing?
  • Supposedly, my "good record" of making payments on my credit card made me eligible to have my interest rate dropped substantially, to allow me to pay off my debt faster.  But they said they needed info to "verify"...  According to several people connected with my bank, nobody who was legit would ever ask for info, because they would already have it!

What's SCARY is how easily low-life SCUM like this can fool you, even when you think you're aware of what NOT to do.

  • Sorry to hear that happen, Henry.

  • Thanks.

I wanted to make sure I got the word out to everyone I know, just a friendly reminder and warning of what's going on out there.  It occurs to me, a few times in the last several weeks I've had phone calls where nobody left a message on my machine, and it wouldn't surprise me if it was the SAME people.  One more reason to "screen" my phone calls...
