TOP PUBLISHERS

NO. 1: MARVEL COMICS

FANTASTIC FOUR #4, $3.99: This is a new storyline, as "One World Under Doom" is in the rear view for this title. I'm tempted to continue, as I enjoy Ryan North's take on the team. But I'm currently suffering from a spasm of frugality.

MARVEL MASTERWORKS THE TOMB OF DRACULA VOLUME 5 HC, $75.00: In for a penny. It'll be over soon.

S.H.I.E.L.D. BY HICKMAN AND WEAVER OMNIBUS HC, $75.00: Jonathan Hickman tried to make S.H.I.E.L.D. something that had a history far predating the modern world, going back to ancient Egypt, in the time of Imhotep, where the "Brotherhood of the Shield," which included En Sabah Nur and the first Moon Knight, fought off a Brood invasion. The series incorporated a lot of famous people from history, some of which became more or less immortal, including Chinese polymath Zhang Heng, Galileo, Michelangelo, Nikola Tesla and Isaac Newton. The protagonists leading us through this history were two Shield (not S.H.I.E.L.D. yet, IIRC) agents named Nathaniel Richards and Howard Stark. (Yes, the fathers of Reed Richards and Tony Stark.)

I missed some issues that I got later, and ended up reading it out of order. The upshot is that I found it a bit much, maybe a little pompous in its serious self-importance as a rewrite of Marvel's history. You know, not everything has to go back 3,000 years! But my disappointment might be tied to the circumstances under which I read it. I'm willing to give it another chance, but not for $75.00. YMMV.

MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN #39, $3.99: Miles is coming back from the Ultimate Universe (which is, apparently, really ending), and he's coming back with something called "origin boxes," which are described below.

NO. 3: IMAGE COMICS

'68 COMPENDIUM TP, $59.99

13746551091?profile=RESIZE_400x Image sent a press release and preview. But I've never been interested in this series, because it feels like it cheapens the experience of the veterans who actually went there. And wasn't the Vietham War horrific enough without zombies? Maybe I'm hypersensitive, because I lived through the Vietnam era, and met many returning vets. After all, I had no problem with Hogan's Heroes. Shrug, I dunno. Maybe I'm just burned out on zombie stories. Once again, YMMV. Here's the PR:

The zombies are back in the razorwire with the locked-and-loaded release of the complete ’68 Compendium by Mark Kidwell, Nat Jones, and Jay Fotos — a blood-soaked monster of a paperback collecting all 30 issues of Vietnam jungle-scorched mayhem. Image Comics drops the payload this October — just in time for Halloween.

On Feb. 13, 1968, during the darkest days of the Vietnam War, the gates of Hell opened wide, unleashing new and hungry life into the countless war-torn dead. Junkyard Joe meets The Walking Dead in this military-horror mashup.

From the original ’68 one-shot, to the first four-issue miniseries, the introduction and first appearance of the legendary "Jungle Jim" and beyond, ’68 Compendium is the definitive ’68 collection and offers up every red, dripping bit. The entire series, the one-shots, and the short backup stories, are all included in full jaw-snapping, flesh-rending color. Fans should get “small” in their foxhole and keep their powder dry.

"It’s been a long time coming," said Fotos. "I’m very excited to get this compendium out to the world!"

Kidwell added: "It's great to see '68 rise again, in all its gory glory, collected into one massive volume! Perfect Halloween read!"

ALL-NEGRO COMICS: AMERICA'S FIRST BLACK COMIC BOOK TP, $12.99: If this is what it says it is, it's pretty important.

13746554686?profile=RESIZE_400xImage Comics is pleased to present a gorgeously remastered milestone in comic book history, the Eisner Award-winning All-Negro Comics: America’s First Black Comic Book. It will be curated by writer/editor Chris Robinson and feature bonus essays to provide historical and cultural background to this momentous publication, a discussion guide for educators, and new comics by some of today’s most notable Black comics creators. All-Negro Comics: America’s First Black Comic Book hits shelves in trade paperback this November.

This new paperback edition features essays, comics, and prose from Eisner Award-winner Dr. Qiana Whitted (EC Comics: Race, Shock, and Social Protest), David Brothers (Good Devils: Don’t Play Fair with Evil), Shawn Pryor (Fast Break), Micah Peters (The Ringer), Zipporah Smith (DC Power: Rise of the Power Company), Samantha Guzmán (short story writer of "Visibly Invisible" and more), Eisner, Harvey, and Ringo nominated letterer Deron Bennett (DC Power 2024), Jasmine Hatcher (Lady Nefertitii’s Kaleidoscope), Sharean Morishita (School Memories), Tony Washington (New York Times bestselling, Eisner Award-winning artist, lead illustrator for the ACLU of San Diego), Ray-Anthony Height (Midnight Tiger), Manny Edeko (Fiyah magazine), Domo Stanton (Sandman Universe: House of Whispers), Ryan Marlow, and Robinson himself.

It also features the unabridged and digitally remastered work of Orrin C. Evans, George J. Evans Jr., John H.Terrell, William H. Smith, and Leonard Cooper, which make up the original 1947 release.

In the Golden Age of Comic Books, pioneering journalist and publisher Orrin C. Evans led a team of Black cartoonists to create the first comic book anthology featuring original Black characters like Ace Harlem and Lion Man, with the expressed purpose of entertaining without harmful stereotypes, pushing boundaries in the industry. Evans went on to be honored posthumously with the ECBACC Pioneer Lifetime Achievement Award and was finally entered into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 2014.

Published soon after the debuts of household names like Superman, Batman, and Captain America—even predating the debut of Black Panther—All-Negro Comics #1 should be among those revered moments of comic book history, but the original 1947 print run was quickly removed from newsstands and faded into obscurity…until now.

“I’m so proud to finally bring this award-winning collection to the widest possible audience with the help of Image Comics," said Robinson. "How often do we get to spotlight a bonafide piece of American history like this?”

CREEPSHOW VOLUME 4 #2 (OF 5, $3.99)

The Creep returns with new scares this Spooky Season! Today Skybound and Image Comics shared a sneak peek at interior pages from Creepshow Vol. 4 #2, the newest issue of the hugely popular comic book anthology based on Greg Nicotero’s hit Shudder TV series produced and licensed by Evoke Entertainment Company. The next chapter of the scariest anthology around will hit comic book shops on October 22, 2025.

Creepshow Vol. 4 #2 will feature stories by rising star writer Rachel Pinnelas (DC’s I Know What You Did Last Crisis) and acclaimed artist Gabriel Walta (Vision), as well as the horror dream team of writers Ted Raimi & Thomas Krajewski (Primer) and artist Ryan Carr (Archie’s Chilling Adventures Presents...).

Brian Witten is overseeing on behalf of Nicotero’s Monster Agency Productions.

In the spirit of all iterations of Creepshow in pop culture, every issue of the Creepshow comic series comes packed with two stomach-churning stories from your favorite creators. Each issue of the five-part anthology will feature different creative teams from the worlds of comics, books, film, television, and beyond. Every uniquely horrifying standalone story is guaranteed to scare you to death.

In this issue, Rachel Pinnelas and Gabriel Walta will make you positively ANTsy in a science experiment that will have you reconsidering your line of work! Then, Ted Raimi & Thomas Krajewski team with Ryan Carr to tee up some evil deeds and drive some bad karma your way!

“Every issue of CREEPSHOW has been a horrific delight, and this one is no exception,” said Executive Editor Ben Abernathy. “The creative team on this issue came together like the hand of fate was guiding it, and I couldn’t be more frightened by the results.”

In addition to the main cover by Lorenzo De Felici (Void Rivals), Creepshow Vol. 4 #2 comes with a lineup of variant covers, including an open to order cover by Ryan Carr and a 1:10 incentive variant by Jorge Fornés (Rorschach).

UNIVERSAL MONSTERS THE INVISIBLE MAN #3 (OF 4, $4.99): Tradewaiting.

NO. 4: IDW PUBLISHING

STAR TREK: VOYAGER — HOMECOMING #2, $4.99: I plan to read this at some point, along with IDW's other new Trek books.

NO. 5: DARK HORSE COMICS

BROOKLYN DREAMS HC, $34.99: What, this is back again? Why? I bought and read it probably 30 years ago. Was it from Pirahna Press? Paradox Press? Pre-Vertigo, I think. Whatever it was, I read it and shelved it and never thought about it again. Here's a PREVIEW.

CAPTAIN HENRY AND THE GRAVEYARD OF TIME #1 (OF 4, $4.99) is set in the Hellboy universe, which is my favorite of all the Mike Mignola universes (I think he's currently at three, but it might be four). But, honestly? My interest started to wane after Hellboy was killed. Heck, I haven't even read the last volume of B.P.R.D. (You know, where giant amphibian things have destroyed civilization and Abe Sapien is wandering ineffectually watching it happen.) I don't know if I'll rally to get this one when it's collected or not. Here's a PREVIEW.

VATICAN CITY TP, $19.99: This is by Mark Millar. It's a post-vampire-apocalypse story about the last remnants of humanity barricaded inside Vatican City, where all the holy relics and such keep the bloodsuckers at bay. I want to read it to find out, if nothing else, why non-Christian vampires aren't storming the place. Here's a PREVIEW.

NO. 6: BOOM! STUDIOS

HELLO HALLOWEEN #1, $5.99: This is a Halloween horror anthology from the folks who make Hello Darkness. Which is a horror anthology. Wait, why do they need a special for this? Here's a PREVIEW.

NO. 7: DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

TERMINATOR: METAL #1, $4.99: The first two Terminator movies were terrific. But, as much as I enjoyed them, they really don't hold up to any kind of serious sci-fi scrutiny. For example, why doesn't Skynet just keep sending Terminators back until one of them succeeds? Or an army of them? It's got all the time in the world, literally. Also, while the future-set scenes are appropriately desperate and bleak, every time I watch one I wonder why the remaining humans are shooting at the terminators. Clearly, that doesn't work. The T-500 stormed a police station, a place filled with men with guns, and won easily. So why are they wasting time doing it? Plus, they're making a lot of sound and light that gives away their location! And where are they getting all that ammunition? No, if humanity really had to fight robots for survival, they'd develop weapons that are, wait for it, useful against robots. Guns are useful against people, but against robots, you'd probably deploy something magnetic, or electrical, or an EMP, or maybe just sand grenades to jam up their gears. But guns? That makes for dramatic scenes in movies, but as a practical matter those humans would all be dead in minutes, because they're fighting stupidly.

Wait, where was I? Oh, yeah, there's a new Terminator series, which might be cool. Sorry for the rant. Here's a PREVIEW.

NO. 9: ONI PRESS

OUTLAW SHOWDOWN #1, $8.99: As I've mentioned before, my favorite kind of Western is the weird Western. (It may, in fact, be the only kind of Western I like, outside of Jonah Hex.) And here's Oni's EC line doing exactly that. Take my money! Here's the PR:

SOME COMIC BOOK COMPANIES ASK YOU TO CHOOSE: DEATH OR GLORY? AT EC COMICS, WE SAY ... WHY NOT BOTH?! Oni Press, the multiple Eisner and Harvey Award-winning publisher of groundbreaking comics and graphic novels since 1997, and William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. are proud to reveal OUTLAW SHOWDOWN #1 — the first in a new series of unpredictable and unforgiving 56-page specials visiting EC’s trademark brand of hard-won vengeance upon storytelling genres from across the ages ...  from prehistoric survival to crime and punishment in epochs far beyond our own.

Debuting this October in our inaugural bonfire of bullets: As the sun settles high above this bone-dry stretch of mesa, wipe the blood from your boot heels and place your wagers as Oni Press and EC Comics raise their pistols to pump six cylinders of hot lead and cold hearts into OUTLAW SHOWDOWN #1 — EC’s first 56-page special celebrating revenge and retribution on the lawless frontiers of the Old West! Gunfighters, scoundrels, butchers, and bandits — they’ll all join us here to draw down on fate itself as coffin-bound creators John Arcudi (B.P.R.D.), Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets), David Lapham (Stray Bullets), Tony Moore (The Walking Dead), Ann Nocenti (Daredevil), and more rain hellfire and fury from the holsters on their hip.

Plus, as an extra-added bounty: Saddle up for a newly remastered and authentically restored tale of hard-fought Western justice from the EC vaults!

“Ever since we first began drawing up plans for the return of EC Comics at Oni Press, we knew there were genres and stories that would fit EC like a glove — and Westerns were always close to the top of that list,” said Oni Press President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson. “It’s no secret that classic Golden Age series like GUNFIGHTER and SADDLE JUSTICE have always been integral — if somewhat under-considered — components of EC’s destructive DNA. But, with OUTLAW SHOWDOWN — and the other forthcoming genre specials that will follow in its wake — we’re aiming to enhance and amplify the combustible combination of ingredients that has made EC’s stories sing — or scream! — across 70-plus years of comics history. These are stories that will grab you tighter than a hangman’s noose ... and leave you kicking and screaming for more before the last page is through.”

“For years the Western genre has been wildly underrepresented in modern-day comics and now some of the greatest storytellers just cannot wait to get their twisted inventions to the page with shysters, cowboys and zombie or two at the helm,” said Sierra Hahn, Oni Press Editor-in-Chief. “We’re honored by this creative line up who will doubtless entertain and terrify until the ink runs dry.”

Also joining our perilous posse, point an ol’ six-shooter salute to sky and welcome steel-sighted cover artists Lee Bermejo (Joker), Tony Moore (The Walking Dead), Ladrönn (Cable), Shawn McManus (Fables), and Rian Hughes (The Multiversity) to this blood-stained, power-burned milestone in EC history. This October, the West runs red— only in OUTLAW SHOWDOWN #1!

AHOY COMICS

THANKSGIVING #1, $7.99. Ahoy alert! Here's the PR:

Thanksgiving: a day for American families, when the alienated, the estranged, and the politically antagonistic come together to perform unity—until the strain inevitably tears them apart. But for one family, the addition of a cruel and deadly secret—involving the continuing rampage of the mysterious Turkeyneck Killer—solidly binds them together in the saddest, most shameful way.

This fall, pull up a chair at your own risk at THANKSGIVING, a gory and timely new horror-comedy one-shot from writer Mark Russell (X-Factor, Second Coming), artist Mauricet (Howl), letterer Rob Steen and publisher AHOY Comics. The oversized 48-page issue about a family dinner gone horribly wrong will feature three grisly covers by Mauricet—a main cover, a “Blood for Dinner” variant, and a “Turkey Death” variant—and land in stores on October 22, 2025… just in time to ruin your holiday.

“Thanksgiving is a black comedy using the most American of holidays as a metaphor for what our nation is in danger of becoming,” said writer Mark Russell. “t tells the story of a nuclear family with many of the same divisions you find within our nation and how deep the rifts between people become while we aren’t paying attention. About how a monster lurks in plain sight, but we choose not to see it.”

“Welcome to the Grandts family's Thanksgiving dinner,” said artist Mauricet. “Please take a seat at the table. We are about to start serving the meal. For the appetizer, you will have a bit of dysfunctional America wrapped in cynical humor. For the main course, we offer you one of the most original serial killers the country has known. Still hungry? Expect a rather surprising dessert…”

"Mark got mad about something big and wrote this story—I think to help process it,” said AHOY Comics Editor-in-Chief Tom Peyer. “I think it'll help us all process it. Whenever he gets mad, I hope he brings it to AHOY. Mauricet, meanwhile, is doing the best work of his career, but then he always seems to be."

  • But I'm currently suffering from a spasm of frugality.

I have always referred to that phenomenon as a "cut-back phase."

MARVEL MASTERWORKS THE TOMB OF DRACULA VOLUME 5: It'll be over soon.

Yes, the MMW line will soon be over, but MMW ToD never will.

Jonathan Hickman tried to make S.H.I.E.L.D. something that had a history far predating the modern world, going back to ancient Egypt...

I didn't even care for the idea (presented during Captain America's "Nazi phase") that S.H.I.E.L.D. went back to the 1920s.

You know, not everything has to go back 3,000 years!

Hell, the Avengers went back one million years!

...the United States ain’t what it used to be.

    Not IRL either. :(

A hardcover was solicited at least twice before, in February of those years, to coincide with Black History Month. I pre-ordered it both times, but as far as I know, it never shipped. I don't recall seeing this one solicited. According to your post, this one is a tpb and ships in November. I'll look into it at my LCS this Wednesday. It will make a nice companion piece to IDW's Invisible Men

    AHOY COMICSTHANKSGIVING #1

I am very enthusiastic about this one (if it's by Mark Russell I have high hopes), but I don't remember seeing this one solicited, either, nor have I noticed it being promoted in recent AHOY! comics. Then again, AHOY! hasn't shipped to my LCS for the past two weeks (Toxic Cusaders #2 and Toxic Avenger Comics #4).

  • ALL-NEGRO COMICS: I don't recall seeing this one solicited.

The owner of my LCS told me this was solicited in "an unusual way" (which is odd because it's published by Image). It was on the shelf.

THANKSGIVING #1 - I don't remember seeing this one solicited, either

I get all of the AHOY! comics, but I was worried about this one because I didn't specifically add it to my p&h list, but it was in my file waiting for me.

    OUTLAW SHOWDOWN #1

A third one I didn't see solicited. I likewise get all of Oni Press's "EC" comics, but this one wasn't waiting for me in my p&h. I had to settle for the "B" cover. :(

  • MARVEL MASTERWORKS THE TOMB OF DRACULA VOLUME 5 HC

I'm guessing you bought this one "for the shelf" (i.e, not to be read right away). Before you shelve it, however, do read the introduction by Tom Palmer, Jr. It is really one of the most informative pieces on comic book inking I have ever read. Palmer Junior exibits a thorough and extensive knowledge and understanding of his father's work. He not only examines Tom Palmer's specific inking techniques, but also Gene Colan's penciling techniques. We all have an intrinsic understanding that Colan's pencils are difficult to ink, but Palmer explains exactly why... and what his father did about it.

SWAMP THING by Len Wein and Kelley Jones

Here is another collection whose editorial material bears a close look: a foreword by M. Christine Valada (Wein's wife), and introduction by Kelley Jones, and an essay by Doug Wheeler. Both Valada and Jones' pieces were highly personal, but the one written by Wein's wife is particularly intimate.

  • I often don't take Masterworks (and other collections where I've read the comics material already) out of the shrink-wrap. Which means I'm denying myself these cool forewords and introductions. I don't take off the packaging unless I need to get into the book for some reason, because in the back of my head I know these books will be sold someday. If not by me, than by my widow or heirs. And a shrink-wrapped books is more valuable than one that has been aging on my shelf. (My All-Star Comics Archives covers are literally yellowing.) 'Tis a dilemma.
