12345112096?profile=RESIZE_180x180Story: Chip Zdarsky | Art: Daniel Acuna | Cover: Alex Ross | Teen+ | $5.99

In the not-so-distant future, the Avengers are corrupt and use their might to run the world instead of defending it. The only hope for repairing the team’s shattered legacy lies in Steve Rogers. Will he pick up the shield once more to save the world from this tragic state? Zdarsky and Acuña’s saga will be a thought-provoking epic that examines what it means to be a superhero in the Marvel Universe, as Steve finds himself in conflict with characters that have startling connections to the Avengers of today and tackles the heartbreaking tragedies that befell his former teammates.

In a gleaming new world of prosperity, Captain America is no more. But Steve Rogers still exists, floating through an America where freedom is an illusion, where the Avengers are strangers and his friends are long dead. But is the Dream? How do you assemble Avengers in a world that doesn’t want them?

“My goal with anything is to create a story that is both new-reader friendly and also welcomes in older readers who will enjoy the references sprinkled throughout,” Zdarsky explained on the call. “I think if you have a base knowledge of Marvel superheroes, there’s really something for you here. And getting a chance to do something that’s self-contained in six issues with one consistent artist throughout is my favorite kind of project because those are types of books you can sell forever.”

“Steve is the perfect character with which to see a changed future since he's been through that experience before coming out of WW2,” Zdarsky explained to ComicBook.com in a recent interview. “His ethics and morals and outlook have a consistency to them, so seeing how he reacts to a changed America is always interesting, to me at least! And this future America is seemingly perfect, so Steve has to question whether or not to upset what his fellow Americans are comfortable with in pursuit of the truth.”

Old Steve Rogers looks a lot like old Robert Redford!

I don't mind dystopic-future stories, but I'd like to know what makes this one different from all the similar What If? stories (besides length).

MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS #1 FACSIMILE EDITION

12345120688?profile=RESIZE_400x12345121056?profile=RESIZE_180x180Story: Jim Shooter | Art/Cover: Mike Zeck | Teen | $4.99

It’s the series that defined what a comic book crossover epic could be — Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck and Bob Layton’s MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS! Next year, Marvel Comics will proudly mark the 40th anniversary of the pioneer Marvel Comics crossover event by boldly re-presenting all 12 issues in their original form, ads and all! Hitting stands each month starting in January, these special facsimile editions will also be available with new variant covers and special foil variant covers!

Plus, since it’s the anniversary of Secret Wars, that means it’s also the anniversary of Spider-Man’s iconic black costume that would one day become Venom! In the same month as MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS #1, Spidey donned the black costume for the first time in Roger Stern, Tom Defalco, and Ron Frenz’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #252. The issue took place after his return from Secret Wars and the mystery behind Spidey’s new look rattled fans for months before it was ultimately revealed later that same year in MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS #7. This all-time great comic issue as well as the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN issues that followed it will also get new Facsimile Editions starting in January. They’ll hit stands each month coinciding with the issues of SECRET WARS just like they did back in 1984! Stay tuned in the months ahead to learn more ways Marvel Comics will honor this landmark Spider-Man moment.

The Beyonder has assembled all of the players on Battleworld – now it’s time to fight! Spider-Man and the various members of the Avengers, Fantastic Four and the X-Men have barely gotten settled in their new surroundings when an army of villains attacks – and the Beyonder’s new planet learns the true meaning of battle! But while this battalion of bad guys looks to secure an early victory, two of the Marvel Universe’s heavyweight schemers make plans of their own. What does Doctor Doom want with Galactus? Why has Magneto gone solo in a fortress of his own? And as the dust settles on the first round of the Beyonder’s secret war, who will be left standing?

The original issues are pretty pricey, so if you want individual issues in your collection and not pay a fortune, here's your chance. Marvel says they're going to reprint all 12, plus related books like Amazing Spider-Man #252.

"Gang War"

JACKPOT #1 (ONE-SHOT)

12345118301?profile=RESIZE_180x180Story: Celeste Bronfman | Art: Joey Vazquez, Eric Gapstur | Cover: Pablo Villalobos | Teen | $4.99

ALWAYS BET ON RED!

Mary Jane Watson, A.K.A. JACKPOT, gets her first solo super story since her debut in ASM #31! New York City is in chaos as the super-powered criminal gangs are at war, and it's all hands on deck! It's a baptism by fire, but, come on, this is Mary Jane. What CAN'T she handle?!

I just can't get used to Mary Jane as a superhero. So many girlfriends become superheroes (Doll Girl, Owl Girl, Hawkwoman, Bulletgirl, Rescue, Mighty Thor, etc.), supervillains (Star Sapphire, Jean Loring) or dead (too many to list) that Mary Jane was almost unique in just being a girlfriend for decades and decades. Now she's a superhero, too, and I don't want her to be. Besides, she's semi-famous, having been an actress, model and New York club owner, so she's almost certain to be recognized.

"Gang War" continues this week in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #42.

"Fall of X"

CABLE #1 (OF 4)

12345117679?profile=RESIZE_400xStory: Fabian Nicieza | Art: Scot Eaton | Cover: Whilce Portacio | Teen+ | $4.99

The fight to save Krakoa is upon us! The final battle will be told across two interconnected series, FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X and RISE OF THE POWERS OF X, as well as various tie-in issues in current X-titles and new series, including Fabian Nicieza and Scot Eaton’s CABLE!

Launching in January, CABLE will see mutantkind’s greatest soldier wage his own war against both Orchis and an all-new threat known as the Neocracy. On this pivotal mission, he’ll team up with one of the few people he can trust—himself! It’s the return of Young Cable as both counterparts race to stop a horrible future from coming to fruition.

The series marks the monumental return of Fabian Nicieza to Cable, a character he helped define throughout the ‘90s in both X-Force and Cable’s solo adventures as well as the 2000s hit Cable & Deadpool series.

“It’s always fun to write Cable and challenge him with a big physical and emotional conflict,” Nicieza shared. “Having written him more than anyone else on the planet, it’s also fun to add to that total!”

THE FUTURE MUST NOT COME TO PASS! All the signs are here: The Neocracy is coming — and with it comes not only the end of mutantkind, but all of the humankind as well! As if rescuing Young Nate from the ongoing threat of Orchis weren't enough, can Cable root out this growing threat and decimate it before the Neocracy has a chance to take hold. But is he already too late to change the future?

Explaining the new saga, Nicieza said, “This series finds Nathan Dayspring Askani’son Gesundheit up against the wall because while the lives of the X-world on Krakoa are under attack, Cable has to focus on the next potential ‘big threat.’ In order to stop the Neocracy before it becomes a revolution of evolution, Cable needs the help (and annoyance) of Young Cable! Indeed, hijinks ensue and Chiclet guns will be fired!”

How many Cables are co-existing at the moment? Maybe just the one, but my head is full of all sorts of all-ages Cables from the last few years of X-stories.

"Fall of X" continues this week in INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #14 and X-MEN #30.

At last, as you demanded: The celebrated creative team of Si Spurrier and Aaron Campbell have returned to Hellblazer! John Constantine has cheated death once again — but his heart's not beating, his body is decaying, and he, his friend Nat, and his son Noah are on the run in America, wanted for murder. Naturally, it's all John's fault —it always is. But as it turns out, Dream himself needs John's help. Something terrible has taken root in America, and it's using the sand from Dream's pouch to impose its will. If John can put a stop to it, he might be able to parlay that favor into a chance to save all their lives — but he's going to need help from someone he hasn't spoken to in years. Someone he wasn't always ... all that kind to. Someone ... or some ... Thing? Spurrier and Campbell's first run on Hellblazer was the best-reviewed comic of 2020, reintroducing the character to a new generation, and their second act, told in extra-length 28-page issues, is ambitious and unmissable!

I love me some Constantine. Hellblazer was a monthly treat back in the Vertigo days. Some of my fondness may just be nostalgia, though. Someday I'll re-read them and see.

Story: Roye Okupe | Art: Toyin Ajetunmobi, Sunkanmi Akinboye | Dark Horse | $24.99

Dark Horse Books and YouNeek Studios team up once again to present an epic YouNiverse crossover in The Oloris: Heroes Will Unite Volume 1! The continent of Africa becomes ground zero for a devastating extraterrestrial invasion from the Moon, forcing a group of heroes to band together in this new graphic novel from the massively talented team of Nigerian creators at YouNeek Studios. The newest graphic novel in the YouNeek line is written by Roye Okupe, with interior art and cover art by Sunkanmi Akinboye, colors by Etubi Onucheyo and lettering by Spoof Animation.

The heroes from across YouNeek Studios' different titles unite for the first time in this epic crossover event! When an unknown anarchist unleashes an army of extraterrestrial androids on the continent of Africa, Malika—legendary warrior queen of the 15th-century West African Empire, Azzaz—must put together a team of "unlike-minded" heroes to respond before it's too late. Featuring appearances from other YouNeek YouNiverse heroes like EXO, Fury, and WindMaker, several YouNeek storylines finally converge.

Dark Horse and YouNeek Studios continue to present stories in a shared universe of African fantasy and superhero tales — the YouNeek YouNiverse!

Check out the YouNeek reading guide featured here on the Dark Horse website if you’re new to the YouNiverse or want to recap before this epic crossover.

Praise for YouNeek Studios:

“E.X.O: The Legend of Wale Williams, Vol. 1 brings an Afrofuturist spin to the superhero genre and is a recommended read for comic fans of all stripes. I cannot wait to see the other books that YouNeek and Dark Horse have in store for this initiative, and I hope to see more of Wale Williams' exploits in the future.” — But Why Tho?

“Malika Fire & Frost combines futuristic technology, magic powers, and ancient artifacts in a unique, fast-paced story. The in-depth world building and stunning art make Malika Fire & Frost a standout book.” — Youdontreadcomics

“Iyanu is a great looking book steeped in the magic of African mythology.” — Comic Crusaders

I haven't read any of these You-Neek series, as most don't seem ready for prime time. But if they keep coming out, they eventually will be.

Story: Michael Moreci, Amanda Diebert, Various | Art: Ricardo Faccini, French Carlomagno | Dark Horse | $19.99

Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories Volume 2: Scum and Villainy contains issues #5-10 of the Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories comics. It is written by Cecil Castellucci (Shade, The Changing Girl), Amanda Deibert (Wonder Woman ’77, Super Hero Girls), and Michael Moreci (Star Wars Adventures, Wasted Space) with interior art by Andy Duggan (Hero Cats, Chrono Cadets), Andrea Mutti (Parasomnia: The Dreaming God, Rebels), Riccardo Faccini (Roundhouse Hooligans, Prison Earth) and Eduardo Mello (Dungeons and Dragons: Mindbreaker, The Blackening) and colors by Daniel Jackson (Stranger Things: Kamchatka, God of War: Fallen) and Michael Atiyeh (Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Forgotten Myths, The Orville: Artifacts). This compendium also features cover art by Cary Nord (Conan, Daredevil) and Tom Fowler (Grendel, Star Wars Republic).

From one end of the galaxy to the other, the forces of evil grow stronger. Criminal syndicates scheme in the shadows, while vicious bounty hunters track down the guilty and innocent alike. And from the height of the Clone Wars to the darkest days of the Resistance, the agents and disciples of the Sith work tirelessly to enact the dark will of their shadowy masters.

If they send me the PR, I'll publish a heads up.

THE ATLAS ARTIST EDITION VOL 1: JOE MANEELY HC

12356720485?profile=RESIZE_180x180Story/Art: Joe Maneely | Fantagraphics | 256 pages | 9.75" × 13.5" | $75.00

The first book in Fantagraphics' new Atlas Artist Edition series collects the best work of Marvel's top artist of the 1950s in a lush, lavish, full-color, oversize collector's volume, scanned directly from the original printings and meticulously restored and presented in a wealth of detail never seen before.

Joe Maneely was known for his draftsmanship, his versatility and his speed. He could draw horror, science fiction, war, crime, Mad-style humor, Westerns and funny animals with equal dexterity. His tactile, chiaroscuro graphic approach to storytelling has made him a legend among the comics cognoscenti, but because he never drew superheroes and his life ended tragically at age 32, he has never been given the attention his short but incandescent career deserves. Until now.

As Geoffrey C. Ward wrote in American Heritage, "Maneely's knowledge of 19th century artifacts was encyclopedic, his rumpled, unshaven cowboys all wore the right hats, swung the right lariats, sat in the right saddles, fired the right model Colts — with every screwhead and trigger guard and notched handle precisely rendered."

And that's only his Westerns. That tightly focused attention to detail pervades his work in every genre.

The Atlas Artist Edition Vol. 1: Joe Maneely, presents a cornucopia of Maneely's work for Marvel (then called Atlas) including Westerns (Kid Colt, Black Rider, Ringo Kid, Wyatt Earp, Two-Gun Kid), pre-Code horror ("Haunted!," "The Raving Maniac" and the classic "Your Name Is Frankenstein"), space opera (Speed Carter), war (Combat Kelly), Mad-style parodies from the pages of Crazy and Riot, Cold-War intrigue and paranoia (Yellow Claw), and Maneely's pride and joy — his Arthurian champion, The Black Knight. Series editor Dr. Michael J. Vassallo provides expert contextual and historical commentary in a special essay for this volume. Dr. Michael J. Vassallo is the pre-eminent expert on the Timely/Atlas period of Marvel's history. He co-wrote The Secret History of Marvel Comics (Fantagraphics Books, 2013) and edited Atlas at War (2020) and Timely Confidential: When the Golden Age of Comic Books Was Young (2017). He has written extensively for the Marvel Masterworks series and maintains his own Timely/Atlas Comics blog. He lives in New York.

Joe Maneely really was awesome, and had he lived, might have been Stan Lee's partner in launching the Marvel Universe. Maneely being the artist everyone aped instead of Kirby would have changed the comics world, but whether for better or worse I can't say. But it sure would have been different.

I'm absolutely going to get this, BTW.

Marvel says they're going to reprint all 12, plus related books like Amazing Spider-Man #252.

If you're looking for Marvel, they're over there by their laurels, resting on them.

I just can't get used to Mary Jane as a superhero.

Back in early "Brand New Day" continuity, wasn't there a heroine running around fans thought was Mary Jane, but ended up being someone else? "One More Day" put me off Spider-Man for years, but now this new "Jackpot" is Mary Jane and is in continuity? It's a "Gang War" tie-in so she must be. Nevermind. I just expanded that yellow summary page.

"Mary Jane Watson, A.K.A. JACKPOT, gets her first solo super story since her debut in ASM #31!"

BTW, who writes this copy? Mary Jane Watson first appeared (in cameo) in Spider-Man #25. It was Gwen Stacy who first appeared in #31. I want a No-Prize!

How many Cables are co-existing at the moment?

    On Earth-J? Zero.

THE ATLAS ARTIST EDITION VOL 1: JOE MANEELY HC

I pre-ordered this. It was supposed to ship in December. In one issue of The Jack Kirby Collector (and I wish I knew which one!), Mark Evanier gives a thoughtful and thorough analysis of what the Marvel Universe might have been like had Joe Maneely lived. He basically looked at Stan's stable of artists at the time and which titles were published and who might have been assigned to which. One of these days I'll run across it while I'm looking for something else altogether.

...it sounds like a few steps up the intellectual ladder from Lifehouse.

I didn't see Lifehouse last week. My LCS must not have ordered a copy.

    • I expect that the reference to a debut in Amazing Spider-Man #31 isn't of Mary Jane proper, but of her Jackpot identity.  According to the Marvel Fandom site that indeed happened, in last August's #31.

Kind of sad that IDW is so diminished and apparently lost the GI Joe and Transformers licenses to Image.  It would be healthy to have a bit more distribution of talent and work.

OTOH, the subject of that sentence is "Mary Jane Watson," so my original question stands.

  • If you're looking for Marvel, they're over there by their laurels, resting on them.

    Bwah-ha-ha!

Luis already called this one -- the AMS they're referring to is the latest run, not the REAL one. Ahem. But as to who writes this copy, it's usually some young PR person. But don't make fun of them, as they sometimes end up big shots. Peter David, for instance. And Alex Segura. There's another one on the tip of my tongue, but I can't remember his name.

They've still got Godzilla, My Little Pony, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog. But they have been in the news pretty often the last few years, mainly for the amazing amount of money they lose every quarter. Most of that is from expanding into gaming, movies and television, and incurring enormous debt in the process. My guess is that the comics are still profitable, but they're out on a limb everywhere else. Since they haven't declared bankruptcy or started selling off parts, I guess for now they're OK.
