This is the last Comics Guide for now.
I like doing the Comics Guide, as I feel as if I'm keeping a Comics Buyer's Guide tradition alive, plus it keeps me up to date on comics I don't read. And it's fun! But I feel that lately the cost/benefit ratio has been out of whack, that it's too time-consuming for the interest it receives. So for the time being, I'm giving it up in favor of more reviews, which is probably a better use of my time. The Guide could return someday if there's enough interest, but for now it's on indefinite hiatus.

It’s the story that has the world on the edge of its seat as heroes stand on opposite sides and fight to preserve the security of the future. And if you thought it couldn’t get bigger – you thought wrong! Today, Marvel is pleased to announce the expansion of the blockbuster Civil War II event with CIVIL WAR II #8 – coming to comic shops later this year!
Legendary creators Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez will extend their stay in the trenches of battle for one more unforgettable issue. Cracks are starting to immerge in the predictive visions of the new Inhuman, Ulysses, and the foundation where our heroes once stood is starting to fracture.
“First of all, the response from fans over Civil War II has been so heartwarming,” says Bendis. “Secondly, over the summer I thought of a different, hopefully better, way to tell our ending. It’s not a different ending but a different way to tell it and I am so happy that Marvel gave us this chance to do our thing. Some fans already know that a lot is going to change in the Marvel Universe post-Civil War II but we’ve kept some secrets secret and issue #8 is chock full of them.”
Will the heroes of the Marvel Universe wield the power of “predictive justice” to change the future or battle to protect tomorrow? The additional issue of Civil War II will bring the explosive event to its powerful conclusion, but with an Inhuman at the center of the conflict with the ability to see what’s to come, has the future already been foretold or can it be changed?
“As the events of Civil War II continued to unfold across the Marvel Universe we saw that the stakes kept rising,” says David Gabriel, Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing. “By providing retailers and fans an additional issue, Bendis and Marquez are given the added freedom to present a story that is going to bring the war to a cataclysmic ending with seismic changes to the Marvel Universe.”
Ideologies have been challenged, alliances have been tested, and battle lines have been drawn. What will be the end result as the final vision from Ulysses is revealed to the heroes of the Marvel Universe and which side will stand triumphant over the other? Join Marvel this fall as Iron Man and Captain Marvel gather their sides and come head-to-head for the epic confrontation in CIVIL WAR II #8!

Jennifer Walters has survived the Civil War, but not unscathed. This December, she rises from the rubble, re-entering the world as a different kind of hero in the all-new HULK #1! Eisner Award-winning writer Mariko Tamaki (This One Summer) makes her Marvel debut alongside rising star artist Nico Leon (Spider-Man) to chronicle the ongoing adventures of Jennifer Walters – and bring you a Hulk book for Marvel NOW! the likes of which you’ve never seen before!
Following the traumatic events of Civil War II, Jen is determined to move forward, to go on with her life. But there is something bubbling under the surface. A quiet rage. The physical and mental wounds are still fresh. The pain of the past and all she’s lost is always there – an undercurrent, a pulse, waiting to quicken and trigger her transformation into the one thing she doesn’t have control over … the HULK!
“The title Hulk implies all of the baggage that comes with that comic’s 50-plus year history – the ongoing battle with the monster within – and that’s why it’s more appropriate for this series,” says Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, speaking with The AV Club. “Jen went through major trauma in Civil War II, and Mariko and Nico’s story will deal with the fallout of that trauma – the anxiety and anger, sometimes self-destructive, that comes along with it. If there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, Jen is going to have to search hard for it, and she’s going to have to battle with some pretty big monsters – including the one within – to find herself again.”
Jennifer Walters’ greatest battle is about to begin. One that will pit her against the monster inside. Can she control the rage that consumed her cousin Bruce for so long? Or will she succumb to it? Find out when Tamaki and Leon bring you the can’t-miss HULK #1 this December!

COMICS INDUSTRY UNITES WITH LOVE IS LOVE BENEFIT BOOK
IN SUPPORT OF ORLANDO TRAGEDY
IDW Publishing, with the support of DC Entertainment, will honor the victims of Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub tragedy by publishing LOVE IS LOVE, an anthology graphic novel curated by writer Marc Andreyko (BATWOMAN, WONDER WOMAN ’77). In the wake of this devastating event, Andreyko assembled a group of fellow comic book creators to contribute to the benefit project. Andreyko received an overwhelming response across the comic book community and beyond, with over 200 writers and artists lending their talents to LOVE IS LOVE, a collection of over 100 short graphic stories. All material has been donated by the writers, artists, and editors, with all proceeds going to victims, survivors, and their families via EQUALITY FLORIDA.
LOVE IS LOVE will debut in comic book shops and bookstores this December. The anthology graphic novel is a 144-page love letter to the LGBTQ community containing moving and heartfelt stories—some using iconic DC characters—from some of the greatest talent in comics, including Phil Jimenez, Steve Sadowski, Paul Jenkins, Mike Carey, Matt Wagner, Marguerite Bennett, Aneke, Damon Lindelof, Patton Oswalt, Steven Orlando, Rafael Albuquerque, Jason Aaron, Jason Latour, James Asmus, Ming Doyle, James Tynion IV, Cecil Castellucci, Brandon Peterson, Jesus Saiz, Olivier Coipel, Leinil Yu, Elsa Charretier, and many more to be announced.
“When tragedy happens, art responds. And after the Pulse massacre, the comics community responded quickly, decisively, and with open hearts,” said project organizer and writer Andreyko. “I could not be more proud of this book, or to be a member of the comics community. The talent and emotion on every page is staggering. LOVE IS LOVE mourns the 49 lost, honors the survivors, and celebrates love in all forms.”
“When Marc brought this project to me, there was no hesitation about us getting involved,” said IDW Chief Creative Officer Chris Ryall. “To echo Marc’s sentiments, we are proud of the hard work and talent that has gone into this project and to be involved in any way to support the survivors and their families in the face of tragedy.”
“We’re deeply thankful to all the participants who donated their work to LOVE IS LOVE,” said Sarah Gaydos, Group Editor for IDW Publishing. “The outpouring of emotion from their work honors the LGBTQ community, and helps express the grief we’re all feeling.”
“Marc's heartfelt passion for this cause and this project has inspired everyone involved in LOVE IS LOVE,” explains Jamie Rich, Group Editor of DC’s Vertigo imprint. “As an editor on the book, I continue to be moved every day by the expressions of hope and love the contributors have put forth, and can only imagine the profound impact the book will have on readers, as well.”
The contributors behind LOVE IS LOVE have banded together to send a powerful message through their art that they stand with the victims of this national tragedy. Help spread the love this December and become part of this historic comics event.

MILESTONE SHUTTER ISSUE FEATURES RARE CROSSOVER OF LEGENDARY IMAGE CHARACTERS
25th anniversary event hits popular creator-owned storyline by Keatinge and del Duca
Critically-acclaimed ongoing series SHUTTER by Joe Keatinge and Leila del Duca will feature a rare crossover event to incorporate legendary Image Comics characters from the classic series SPAWN, created by Todd McFarlane; GLORY, created by Rob Liefeld; WITCHBLADE, created by Marc Silvestri, editor David Wohl, writer Brian Haberlin and artist Michael Turner; SAVAGE DRAGON, created by Erik Larsen; INVINCIBLE, created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker; and SHADOWHAWK, created by Jim Valentino.
SHUTTER #25 is a landmark issue for the popular pandimensional adventure series, but it will also celebrate Image Comics’ 25th anniversary with this exceptional moment in Image Comics history.
“Image Comics is why I write comics,” said Keatinge. “After a lot of soul-searching, I felt the best way to express my gratitude on the Image partners' momentous anniversary is to unite our characters over eating eggs and drinking mimosas.”
“It's been a dream come true, drawing characters that were created and brought to life by the Image founders,” said del Duca. “SHUTTER may not have existed if it weren't for those seven men who left work-for-hire comics to make creator-owned stories. I loved spending time with their characters, incorporating them into our storyline, and having them interact with our own characters, Kate, Alain, and Alarm Cat. I had so much fun!”
Fans dare not miss the terrifying biscuits-and-gravy secret no one will see coming in SHUTTER #25. Here, SHUTTER will kick off 2017 with these founding heroes meeting up with the cast of SHUTTER’s beloved character ensemble for what may prove to be one of their most delicious adventures yet.
“The SHUTTER team found a great way to celebrate the history of Image Comics—and the universal love of two of the most important meals EVER combined into the best meal (Eat it, Dinner)!” added Brandon Graham (KING CITY, PROPHET), artist of SHUTTER #25’s special variant cover.

The worship of mortals is needed by the gods to maintain their divinity -- but the number of gods has swelled, and there are fewer mortal faithful for the individual gods in each pantheon. Only the gods who maintain worshipers will survive, and so tensions are rising among the pantheons. There is an uneasy peace … but peace is not desired by all!

SUPERGIRL: BEING SUPER #1
Written by MARIKO TAMAKI
Art and cover by JOELLE JONES
PRESTIGE FORMAT • 48 pg, FC, 1 of 4, $5.99 U.S. • RATED T
A Coming-of-Age Story for the Girl of Steel From Caldecott Honor Winner Mariko Tamaki and Acclaimed Artist Joëlle Jones
DC Entertainment announces a brand-new miniseries with an invigorating twist on the Supergirl we know and love! The Girl of Steel returns in a story not only about being super, but also the trials and tribulations of being 16. A coming-of-age story with superhero flair, SUPERGIRL: BEING SUPER comes from the creative minds of Caldecott Honor and Eisner Award winning young adult author Mariko Tamaki (This One Summer) and superstar artist Joëlle Jones (Lady Killer).
"I've had so much fun working on this project with DC and Joëlle,” says Tamaki. “Clearly, I'm a writer with a devoted interest in adolescence, so it’s been a thrill having the opportunity to explore the alien side of 16."
Jones, who is creating content solely for DC and Vertigo after being announced at San Diego Comic-Con, will be providing both interiors and covers for the series."Working with Mariko on this book has been great! The format is giving me a chance to do something very different and I feel lucky that DC is giving us the freedom to really play with this character,” says Jones. “I hope fans have as much fun reading it as I have had drawing it!”
Imagine this: You’re an alien. You have super powers. You are SUPERGIRL. But you’re also 16, a teenager just trying to survive the day-to-day life of high school. The upside is, yes, you can fly, you can crush diamonds with your bare hands. The downside is that being super can be a super complicated and super confusing thing to be, especially when the whole being super thing is a secret.
This is the story of Kara Danvers, known to her home planet of Krypton as Kara Zor El. On the one hand, Kara is a typical teen, navigating relationships, friendships, and classes, on the other she's a being with immense power and potential, with the added responsibility of managing her developing super powers. As if transitioning into adulthood wasn’t hard enough!
As Kara turns 16, her powers begin manifesting in bizarre hot flashes, glowing zits, symptoms that are becoming harder to control. That's right, two words, ALIEN ZITS. This new series is more than just heroics. It is the action-packed and heartfelt story of Kara Danvers and her attempts to balance the roles of teenager and hero.
This is a fresh take on Supergirl full of passion and ingenuity, with some added teenage irony. The first issue of the new series will debut December 28th, with subsequent issues being released every other month. Each issue is super-packed with 48-pages of story, in prestige format.

"This is the last Comics Guide for now."
Aw, I'm sorry to hear that. I do read them every week, even though I might not post a comment every week. Still, I understand if you feel the "cost/benefit ratio [is] out of whack." I will look forward to more reviews and try to provide feedback to keep the discussion moving.
I agree with Jeff: sorry that the Comics Guide is on hiatus; I have read it every week; have not posted very often (because by the time I buy and read the books my comments are out of date); but, understand your decision. Look forward to any pending Reviews. I would find your pick(s) for: "Best of the Week/Month/Whenever (you have time)" to be helpful. At any rate, Thanks for all the Comics Guides!
