Shadowman is like Dr. Strange, Dr. Fate, Dr. Spektor and one or two others whose names elude me right now -- the designated magic guy of a superhero universe who just can't keep a title going. Is it maybe that the kind of person who is attracted to superhero stories just isn't the same kind of person who likes horror/magic stories? Or is it that this genre is more difficult to make and keep interesting? Or are the "rules" of a magic book just more complicated than a straightforward superhero slugfest, and therefore off-putting? Or are these characters just not very well developed? Or what?

Anyhow, I enjoy Shadowman well enough, but given a choice, I'd probably opt for a superhero book. That doesn't prove anything, though, as I don't know if I'm average or an outlier. And my favorite Marvel book right now is Dr. Strange. So I dunno.

Anyhow, it looks like the male Shadowman is being replaced by a female Shadowman. Given the established mythos of the character, she's probably not the first woman to don the mask, but she is the first one we've seen.

7TH GARDEN VOL 1 (GN)

Publisher: VIZ MEDIA LLC

Writer/Art/Cover: MITSU IZUMI

Mature • $9.99

Awyn tries to be the perfect gardener -- and perfect man -- to win over his human mistress. But when he unwittingly awakens an ambitious demon, he must spend his days slicing away the rotten roots of beautiful gardens worldwide with his giant sword. And now seven angels are hunting him and his demon mistress down! For older teen audiences.

So let me get this straight: A gardener gets caught up in a war between angels and demons, and must ... garden ... to fight? With a big sword. So it's ... Grand Theft Gardening. World of Weed-Pulling. Assassin's Seeds. God, you have to love the Japanese.

ADVENTURES IN THE RIFLE BRIGADE (TPB)

Publisher: IMAGE COMICS

Writer: GARTH ENNIS

Art: CARLOS EZQUERRA

Cover: CARLOS EZQUERRA

144 PAGES • FC • M • $14.99

WORLD WAR TWO WAS NEVER LIKE THIS Determined to win the war on their own, the Rifle Brigade are Britain’s top commando unit—skilled, deadly and with no more grip on reality than absolutely necessary. First, the team are required on a job so crucial, so deadly, so utterly top secret that even they don’t know what it is. Then, in “Operation Bollock,” our heroes are set to track down a famously missing part of the Fuhrer’s anatomy—determined to wrench the missing gonad from the hands of their oldest enemy.

Looks like a Sgt. Fury parody, by no less than Garth Ennis, who also writes and evocative and often heart-rending War Stories. Reason enough to read/review it, and I'll try to do so.

If you missed the best Reggie story I've ever read, here it is again!

• “Power Play” comes to its rousing conclusion!

• Regent’s master plan is working until Mary Jane Watson gets into the fray!

It was only a matter of time, wasn't it? Incidentally, Bleeding Cool thinks Mary Jane is the "big death" Marvel has been teasing. I hope not -- Spider-Man's list of dead supporting characters is already too long.

Variant cover by CAT STAGGS

32 pg • FC • 1 of 6 • $3.99 U.S. • RATED E • DIGITAL FIRST

This issue will ship with two covers.

Holy 1960s-TV crossover! Capitalizing on the past success of the Green Hornet and The Man From U.N.C.L.E crossovers, DC Comics is partnering with BOOM! Studios to pair together two of the hippest shows from the ’60s in the new Digital First comic book miniseries BATMAN ’66 MEETS STEED AND MRS. PEEL.

Launching as a 12-chapter, bi-weekly series based on the classic 1960s Batman TV show starring Adam West and Burt Ward, the comic will feature Batman and Robin coming face-to-face for the first time with the other (and English) dynamic duo John Steed and Mrs. Peel – characters from the hit ’60s British TV series The Avengers starring Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg.

Critically acclaimed British comic book writer Ian Edginton (X-Force, JUSTICE LEAGUE) has been tapped to pen the series, joined by artist Matthew Dow Smith (JUSTICE LEAGUE: GODS & MONSTERS -- BATMAN). Cover artists include BATMAN ’66 veteran Michael Allred and fan-favorite artist Cat Staggs, who contributes a variant cover for issue #1.

Following the digital release in June, the comic will debut as a print periodical in July as a six-issue series.

As Bruce Wayne shows the beautiful head of a UK electronics company the sights of Gotham, they are interrupted by the felonious feline Catwoman! Unwilling to leave Miss Michaela Gough unprotected, Bruce resigns himself to the fact that Batman cannot save the day. But some new players have arrived in town – though even as the lovely, catsuit-clad Mrs. Peel and her comrade John Steed take control of the situation, nefarious plots continue apace!

Well, this is one way DC can publish "The Avengers."

BLACK BAG VOL 1 (TPB)

Publisher: LEGENDARY COMICS

Writer: CHRIS ROBERSON

Art: J.B. BASTOS

Cover: DREW JOHNSON

$14.99

A suburban housewife with a criminal past and a thirst for adrenaline is about to get a top-secret side job: carrying out the government's most dangerous missions. Renear is tired of playing by the rules. A valedictorian and top athlete in her younger years, she's sacrificed a promising career to tie the knot and play house; isn't there more to life than this? Of course there is, if you're willing to take the shot. It's time the world found out what she is truly capable of. Collects issues #1-6 of the miniseries.

Anybody here read Lady Killer? It was a story of a 1950s housewife who is secretly a killer for hire. The (gorgeous and authentic-looking) 1950s art, and the vaguely 1950s advertising approach to covers, poses and such gave it a subversively satirical vibe. This book appears to be using a similar premise, but playing it straight!

BLACK SCIENCE #22

Publisher: IMAGE COMICS

Writer: RICK REMENDER

Art: MATTEO SCALERA, MORENO DINISIO

Cover A: MATTEO SCALERA

Cover B: MORENO DINISIO

32 PAGES • FC • M • $3.99

Writer Rick Remender (LOW, DEADLY CLASS) and artist Matteo Scalera (DEAD BODY ROAD, Deadpool) will launch a new story arc in their high-concept, high-stakes science fiction series this July.

Previously in BLACK SCIENCE, the catastrophic final jump of the Pillar cast the last Dimensionaut adrift on the wreckage of his former self, stranded in the furthest reaches of space. Before he reclaiming his mantle as protector of the Eververse, he first had to overcome the demons that lurk within his own soul.

In BLACK SCIENCE #22, Grant McKay threatens to unravel a peace treaty between three godlike races, putting the entire Eververse at risk—all in a hot-headed attempt to rescue his daughter. Big changes, bigger action, and a stunning climax that will shake the world of BLACK SCIENCE to its very foundations!

"The new storyline We Say Goodbye to Ourselves (part 1 of 5) begins in BLACK SCIENCE #22, and is a very different new direction for the series,” said Remender. “A hard-earned optimistic appraisal might just lead to a hard-earned victory for Grant McKay. All of the pieces we've set up begin to converge. A new cast member will take the spotlight. An encounter with a strange sorceress will lead to a character defining choice that will change one Dimensionaut forever.”

“We have more exciting new worlds, illustrated masterfully by Matteo, that alone is worth the price of admission,” he added. “And finally one of our cast members returns home to Earth to discover a shocking truth. I couldn't be more excited about this story and the payouts loyal readers have to look forward to."

I'm not a Black Science reader for reasons I've repeated in this forum to0 often. But some Legionnaires like it, and for those thinking about trying it, here's a press release touting a new story arc.

BOUNTY #1 (of 10)

RAT QUEENS MEETS FIREFLY!

The Gadflies were the most wanted criminals in the galaxy—robbing corporations to redistribute wealth to the destitute. Now, with a bounty to match their reputation, the Gadflies are forced to abandon banditry for a career as bounty hunters ... ’cause if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em—then rob ’em blind!

Rat Queens creator Kurtis Wiebe joins forces with pop-comic sensation Mindy Lee to present a femme fatale sci-fi caper of epic proportions!

• Also features an exclusive bonus story and other special content. Dark Horse Comics is happy to announce that Rat Queens Eisner Award-nominated writer Kurtis Wiebe is bringing his latest creator-owned series to readers this summer with the arrival of Bounty #1.

This ongoing series sees Wiebe join forces with pop-comic sensation Mindy Lee to present a femme-fatale sci-fi caper of epic proportions!

Bounty is strongly my voice and one of my favourite comics I've ever written,” says Wiebe. “While it's about sisters who hunt criminals in the future, it is ultimately about the nature of family and the trust we share with those closest to us.  With a little bit of action and romance on the side. What Mindy Lee is doing with the art is unlike anything I've seen in comics before.”

Praise for Wiebe:

“With an honest love for the genre, Wiebe [is] building an impressive addition to the sword and sorcery genre of comics.”—Newsarama

“Wiebe fully understands the story he wants to tell. There's a confidence to his writing, a sense of direction.”—IGN

“Wiebe holds nothing back through his situational humor and his ability to turn clichés on their heads.”—Comic Book Resources

“Wiebe delivers, piping some fun and freshness in an otherwise overdone genre.”—Comics Bulletin

“The first issue of Wiebe’s new series is a roaring success as far as I’m concerned.”—Population Go

“I recommend checking in on the ground floor because it’s positioning itself as one of the most compelling stories of the new year.”—iFanboy

I tried to read this, and got bored halfway in. I'll try again for a review later in the week, preferably when I'm not so bushed from a particularly rough stretch of nights at work.

BBC Worldwide North America and Titan Comics are thrilled to reveal that this summer’s special Doctor Who event comic will feature the Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors from Titan’s four ongoing Doctor Who series. This comic will be a spectacular five-part, bi-weekly adventure featuring one of the Doctor’s most iconic foes – the Cybermen!

Penned by best-selling authors George Mann (Eighth Doctor, Dark Souls) & Cavan Scott (Ninth Doctor, Vikings) with art by Alessandro Vitti (Secret Warriors, Captain America & Hawkeye), this highly anticipated event comic kicks-off in stores and on digital platforms July 6, supported by Titan’s third annual Doctor Who Comics Day event on Saturday, July 9, 2016.

2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the show’s iconic cyborgs, the Cybermen. The Cybermen first appeared in the serial "The Tenth Planet" in 1966, and have been featured in Doctor Who numerous times since, including the 2006 two-part modern origin story, "Rise of the Cybermen" and "The Age of Steel."

This special crossover event comic titled Supremacy of the Cybermen stars the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston), Tenth Doctor (David Tennant), Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith), and Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi), and their comic companions – Gabby, Cindy, Alice, Rose (Billie Piper) and Captain Jack (John Barrowman)!

Exiled from Gallifrey at the very end of time, Rassilon, fallen leader of the Time Lords, has been captured by the last of the Cybermen. Now, the Cybermen have access to time travel. With it, every defeat becomes a victory. Every foe is now dead -- or Cyberized.

The debut issue comes with five variant covers to collect: an art cover by series artist Alessandro Vitti, a photo cover by Will Brooks, a cool Cybermen variant by Fabio Listrani, a blank sketch variant, and a fun coloring variant – perfect to color in at home or in stores on Doctor Who Comics Day.

This year’s global Doctor Who Comics Day event on Saturday, July 9, is set to be even bigger than previous years with new comics and collections, merchandise, variant covers, signings, and events across the globe at comic shops, bookstores, retail chains, libraries, and on digital platforms. New to this year’s event, Doctor Who comics fans can register for an event kit to hold their own reading group parties.  Doctor Who comics fans, retailers, and librarians should visit Titan-Comics.com for details to sign-up.

Do the Cybermen look more imposing these days? The ones I saw back in the '80s were kinda cheesy-looking.

Writer Antony Johnston (The Coldest City, CODENAME BABOUSHKA) and artist Justin Greenwood (Wasteland, Stringers) will launch a new story arc in their ongoing science fiction crime series this July.

Previously in THE FUSE, Ristovych and Dietrich were faced with the yearly bacchanalia that is Perihelion -- a 24-hour festival celebrating The Fuse’s closest proximity to the sun. Rising to the occasion, they battled crowds, fervored citizens, escaped convicts, crazed gunmen, anarchist protesters, attempts on the Mayor’s life and two homicide cases to boot. It was a long day.

In THE FUSE #19, Ralph’s mystery might just be solved at last, and retirement beckons for Midway’s oldest, crankiest Homicide detective. Before Klem can hang up her space boots, there’s one final case to solve -- and this one will hit closer to home for her secretive young partner Ralph than he’d like …

"This is the one where we burn it all down and dance around the flaming wreckage,” said Johnston. “A seemingly simple homicide will turn into something much bigger, and the cracks in Klem and Ralph's relationship will explode. In the finest comic book tradition, nothing will ever be the same again ..."

"It feels to me like this whole series has been building to this story arc,” said Greenwood. “The time has come for Klem and Ralph to put their cards on the table, and the results may not be very pretty."

A press release for a new story arc.

IDW Publishing is pleased to announce Jack Kirby’s The Mighty Thor Artist’s Edition—the very first Marvel Comics Artist’s Edition to feature Kirby’s work. This mammoth 15” x 22” hardcover collection includes classic complete stories from Journey Into Mystery #111, #117, #118 and other stories, plus a beautiful gallery section by Kirby, the undisputed King of Comics.

"I've had the great pleasure of working with one of the most creative men in comics—the great Jack Kirby,” said Stan Lee, “whose magnificent artwork and wonderful story sense have rightly earned him the nickname ‘King Kirby.’ He had the ability to take any theme and make it look spectacular due to the power and the brilliance of his artwork. If ever a writer had the perfect collaborator, I was lucky to have had the brilliant and inimitable Jack Kirby."

Jack Kirby was the most important and influential artist in comic’s history. Besides Thor, he co-created most of the Marvel Universe, including Captain America, The Fantastic Four, The X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, Ant-Man, Iron Man, The Silver Surfer, and so many others. All the grandeur and energy that infused Kirby’s artistry is evident here—this is the next best thing to looking over the masters shoulder at his drawing board!

“Without Jack Kirby, the comic books we know and love would not exist,” said Special Projects Editor Scott Dunbier, “His work influenced and shaped the entire art form. It’s as simple as that.”

PAPER GIRLS #6

Publisher: IMAGE COMICS

Writer: BRIAN K. VAUGHAN

Art: CLIFF CHIANG & MATT WILSON

COVER: CLIFF CHIANG

32 PAGES • FC • T+ • $2.99

PAPER GIRLS was created by New York Times bestselling and Eisner award winning writer Brian K. Vaughan and award winning artist Cliff Chiang launched to critical-acclaim and immediate fan-following. In order keep up with increasing customer demand, PAPER GIRLS #6 is being fast-tracked to a second printing.

PAPER GIRLS #6 marks the beginning of the second arc for the series and returns to the story with a bold new direction, as Erin, Mac, and Tiffany find themselves launched from 1988 to a distant and terrifying future.

PAPER GIRLS is set in the early hours after Halloween of 1988 when four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls uncover the most important story of all time. Suburban drama and otherworldly mysteries collide in this smash-hit series about nostalgia, first jobs, and the last days of childhood.

Praise for PAPER GIRLS:

“A great read from top to bottom. … Vaughan's pacing allows for immediate investment, something Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson further with their excellent art.” —IGN

“Paper Girls builds a captivating mystery with an all-star creative team.” —The Onion’s AV Club

“You all should be reading Brian K. Vaughan's Paper Girls comic series now.” —Los Angeles Times’ HeroComplex

“Vaughan’s spiky writing and Chiang’s vivid, dramatically skewed art make for a potent mix, particularly in the darkly comic dream sequences that punctuate the action. This is that rare period series that lets its references (Dukakis, MacGyver) slip seamlessly into the action.” —Publisher’s Weekly

“The character designs are fitting for the ’80s, and I fell in love with the overall illustrative style, which was further enhanced by colorist Matthew Wilson’s vibrant, brilliant work.” —Teen Ink

“What I’d imagine you’d get if you mashed-up Monster Squad with an all-female cast, threw in some sci-fi elements, and set it against some sweet pink and yellow themed art. In other words: it’s pretty gosh darn amazing.” —Kirkus Reviews

Paper Girls: the next great American comic book.”—Vox.com

Throwaway (n.): Cold War slang for a deniable asset, a disposable assassin meant to die alongside their target.

1973. Project MK-ULTRA shuts down for good, its goal of creating brainwashed assassins and psychic spies unrealized. That's the story the world believes for thirty years, until Dean Logan, son of a successful ULTRA test subject, narrowly escapes a team of enhanced operatives sent to kidnap him back into the fold. On the run—not just from the dirtiest secret the CIA ever funded—but his own out of control psychic abilities, Dean is saved by Abby Palmer, a former Army Ranger taken by ULTRA in Afghanistan and reprogrammed to be an unstoppable, disposable killer.

Except Abby survived her expiration date, and now she's turned her deadly skill set toward one goal: destroying the ULTRA program and dragging its masterminds into the light. Teaming up to take them down, Dean and Abby quickly discover ULTRA's leadership has gone rogue, and the program's charismatic head doctor has her own plans—for Dean and Abby, for ULTRA, and for the United States itself.

Looking into a future of superpowered assassins, telepathic intelligence agents, and far-reaching, government-toppling conspiracies, THROWAWAYS is  written by Caitlin Kittredge (Coffin Hill, Hell), with art by Steve Sanders (Wolverine) is the spy thriller as you've never seen it before.

"Throwaways is the comic I've been waiting my whole career to write, and I can't think of a better publisher than Image or a better collaborator than Steven,” said Kittredge. “This book is a collection of everything I love—spies, superpowers, secret history, conspiracies and action, grounded in a big dose of flawed, realistic characters. It's just plain fun to write this book and I can't wait for it to be unleashed on the world."

Sanders added: "Throwaways has been a blast to work on! Just getting to draw ‘real life’ telekinetic fights has been something of a dream come true. I've had an itch to draw that sort of thing since I was a kid. It's also giving me the chance to try out some illustration techniques I've just recently learned about. There's a lot of detail to play with, a lot of action, but also quiet moments to build up tension. It's hard for an artist to not be excited about a comic like this."

Another new Image book. They've had a pretty good track record lately.

    TREASURY OF MURDER (HC SET)

    1936786679?profile=RESIZE_180x180Publisher: NBM

    Writer/Art/Cover: RICK GEARY

    Mature • $39.99

This specially priced banded set of hardcovers provides an engrossing, illustrated journey into true crime classics of the late Victorian era and early 20th Century, including three works in Rick Geary's increasingly storied treasury of murder -- Famous Players, about the murder of a prominent silent movie director and resulting scandal in early Hollywood; Lovers Lane, the shady date spot where the corpses of a Reverend and a respected townswoman were found holding hands; and one of the most famous assassinations in American history: the murder of Abraham Lincoln. These carefully researched presentations of true crime stories, including bibliographies of research sources, present true facts about famous murders in an entertaining fashion.

I've bragged on Geary's Treasuries before -- they're very well researched, and stick to the known facts, letting the reader draw his or her own conclusions. That's cool. Also, his woodcut-style art looks old-fashioned, and is very polished, taking you into a world that's long gone. That's cool, too.

These aren't the three books I'd pick for a set -- some of the others are more shocking -- but they should make for a decent introduction if you haven't tried the Treasuries yet.

  • LONE RANGER/GREEN HORNET #1

If anyone doesn't know, The Green Hornet radio show was originated by the station that produced The Lone Ranger.

ADVENTURES IN THE RIFLE BRIGADE (TPB)

It's a collection of the two minis they did in 2000-2002 for Vertigo. There was apparently a collection in 2004.

Ezquerra was the artist who designed Judge Dredd. A reprint of his Strontium Dog work (from Starlord/2000 AD) appeared in this space not too long ago. He also drew most of the covers for a Marvel UK Sgt. Fury reprint series in the 70s.

    (corrected)

  • On Miraculous, I've been following the series on Nicktoons, I think it is a French remake of an anime and I've enjoyed it. Setting the show in Paris makes for some really good backgrounds for the animation and the show itself is very much all ages.

  • BATMAN 66’ MEETS STEED AND MRS. PEEL

The chessboard is after a show introduction that was used in the US.

    SOLARMAN #1

Apparently, the first version of Solarman was created by David Oliphant and published by Pendulum Press. The Marvel issues were connected to an attempt to get a cartoon version off the ground. There's an account of the Pendulum Press version of the character here (scroll down).

And, not unlike Roy Thomas, they decided that two guys with the same last name must be related.

  • I've not heard of Outcast. What's it about?

  • Kind of a 'possession' in a small community with the main antagonist being the 'Outcast' who can affect/detect/deny the possessions and has a history with family and possessions and so on and a Reverend partner who tries to help/aim and as I'm writing this I'm realising it sounds nothing like it seems !!

It's a slow burning atmospheric ambiguous 'realistic' adult series and it is a refreshing  book.

I also tradewait  and there's only been three so far so seeing a TV series so quickly is a leap of faith but that is being adapted quite faithfully and they've got that atmosphere down quite well.
