BEST BETS
THE ADVENTURES OF APOCALYPSE AL VOL 1 (TPB, Image Comics, $9.99): Collects the four-issue miniseries introducing Allison Carter (the Apocalypse Al of the title), who is a paranormal investigator from a long line of paranormal investigators. It's written by J. Michael Straczynski, famed as the creator of Babylon 5, and is supposed to be light-hearted, although humor is not known as one of Straczynski's strengths. Worth a look, however.
ART OF NEIL GAIMAN VISUAL BIO (HC, Harper Collins, $39.99): Not strictly a comic book or graphic novel, this biography examines Gaiman's rise in the 1980s London comics scene and shows how his creative impulses then led to his many media triumphs today. Author Hayley Campbell had access to Gaiman, plus his notes, sketches, artwork and other esoterica from over the years.
BLACK SCIENCE VOL 1: HOW TO FALL FOREVER (TPB, Image Comics, $9.99): A genre-bender that combines science fiction, horror, action/adventure and humor with a premise -- out-of-control dimension-hopping -- that accommodates them all. This plays to writer Rick Remender's strengths (big ideas, breakneck pacing) and has sold well.
C.O.W.L. #1 (Image Comics, $3.50): Superheroes first appeared in 1938, with the advent of Superman, followed by hundreds of wannabes. This book's premise is a world in which early superheroes formed a union, one that continues to the present day -- but with dark secrets threatening to unfold. A history of labor relations -- even super-powered ones -- seems like a yawn-inducing premise for a comic book, but one imagines they wouldn't attempt it unless they had a great idea.
DEADPOOL #29 (Marvel Comics, $3.99): This tie-in to Marvel's big summer crossover, "Original Sin," promises to reveal some heretofore unknown details of Wade Wilson's childhood. Since we've never been privy to anything before Wilson became Deadpool before, this is a must-have for Deadpool fans.
DOCTOR SPEKTOR: MASTER OF THE OCCULT #1 (Dynamite, $3.99): Few people outside of comics circles have probably ever heard of Doctor Spektor, who was a mildly interesting supernatural investigator in Gold Key comics of the 1970s. He gets a makeover here courtesy of fan-favorite writer Mark Waid, and it looks good.
HARBINGER #23 (Valiant Comics, $3.99): One of the major characters gets offed, and Valiant promises that dead means DEAD in their universe.
MIRACLEMAN BOOK 1: A DREAM OF FLYING PREMIERE (HC, Marvel Comics, $29.99): In the 1980s, comics legend Alan Moore took a third-rate Captain Marvel knockoff from the UK and re-imagined him as a character and a series that set the comics world on its collective ear. After years of being tied up in the courts, that series is finally getting reprinted -- and will also finally be finished! This is the first book of that series, and well worth the $30.
SLEDGEHAMMER 44 VOLUME 1 (TPB, Dark Horse, $19.99): MIke Mignola introduces another major character to his Hellboy mythos, Sledghammer (a sort-of Iron Man in World War II). This book collects the character's earliest appearances, so late-comers can get in on the ground floor.
TREES #1 (Image Comics, $2.99): What would happen if aliens visited Earth, but didn't perceive us as intelligent life -- and proceeded to colonize the place? That seems to be the premise of a new graphic novel by sci-fi master Warren Ellis, which begins here in serial form.
STIEG LARSSON’S THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE (HC, DC Comics, $29.99): This adaptation of the second in Stieg Larsson's "Millennium Trilogy" carries over the creative team from DC's adaptation The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, including Scottish mystery writer Denise Mina. That first adaptation was quite good, so it's likely this one will be as well.
THANOS ANNUAL #1 (Marvel Comics, $4.99): Marvel finally gets around to fleshing out its Darkseid-wannabe, just in time for his upcoming starring role in the Marvel Films.
UMBRAL VOL 1: OUT OF THE SHADOWS (TPB, Image Comics, $9.99): Another new Image series gets its first collection, and should appeal to fans of Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and other magical worlds. It's the story of a young female thief who discovers that the royal family of her medieval-ish kingdom has been slaughtered and is now being impersonated by magical beings. That makes her a target for these creatures, and who is going to believe her? This is also a coming-of-age story as well as a heroic journey with a touch of young romance, so I suspect it would appeal to both genders equally.

192 pg, FC, $16.99 US
The World’s Mightiest Mortal is reborn in The New 52 in this incredible tale from JUSTICE LEAGUE #7-11, 0, 14-16 and 18-21! Young orphan Billy Batson has bounced from foster home to foster home, but when he’s drawn to the Rock of Eternity, he is imbued with powers beyond those of any mortal man! Can he learn how to handle those powers in time to defeat the villainous Black Adam?
I'm still not certain how I feel about renaming a Golden Age hero -- I didn't like it when the original Green Lantern tried to be "Sentinel" and I don't think I like "Shazam" instead of Captain Marvel. But OK, what's done is done.
I'm also not sure how I like "Shazam" working and playing with others in the Justice League titles. Because he is a boy masquerading as a man, the writers make his dialogue pretty juvenile. But, because others aren't supposed to know he's really a kid, it makes him look brain damaged. I know it defeats the concept, but maybe the Wisdom of Solomon should come into play here, allowing him to masquerade better -- as he did in the Golden Age. Or they should sequester him to his own universe, like they do Adventures of Superman, the He-Man titles and other non-New 52 superhero books. But OK, they opted not to do that, and what's done is done.
And this isn't a bad story, although Billy Batson is pretty unlikeable until the end (and Freddy Freeman stays that way). It brings in Black Adam right off the bat, introduces a plausible Tawky Tawny and puts Billy in a foster-home situation with a lot of other kids who smell of Shazam Jr., Lieutenant Shazams and other story possibilities.

Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy is an ongoing international sensation: topping numerous bestseller lists, selling more than 60 million copies worldwide, and not one but two popular film adaptations.
The phenomenon continues with Vertigo's release of THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE, a graphic novel adaptation by acclaimed crime novelist Denise Mina with cover by Lee Bermejo and art by Leonardo Manco, Antonio Fuso and Andrea Mutti.
In THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE, Mikael Blomkvist, crusading publisher of the magazine Millennium, has decided to run a story that will expose an extensive sex trafficking operation. On the eve of its publication, the two reporters responsible for the article are murdered, and the fingerprints found on the murder weapon belong to his friend, the troubled genius hacker Lisbeth Salander. Blomkvist, convinced of Salander's innocence, plunges into an investigation. Meanwhile, Salander herself is drawn into a murderous game of cat and mouse, which forces her to face her dark past.
Scottish writer Denise Mina is the acclaimed author of Deception and Field of Blood, and is considered a leading international crime fiction novelist. Mina has also written for Vertigo's HELLBLAZER series starring John Constantine, the original graphic novel A SICKNESS IN THE FAMILY, and THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO.
Lee Bermejo is the writer and artist of the New York Times bestselling graphic novel BATMAN: NOEL, the interior and cover artist of the much talked about BEFORE WATCHMEN: RORSCHACH miniseries and was responsible for the stunning covers of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO.
Argentinean artist Leonardo Manco has worked extensively on Vertigo's HELLBLAZER comic book series, while Italian artist, Andrea Mutti, first worked with Vertigo on the original graphic novel THE EXECUTOR, then worked on the imprint's popular DMZ comic series and most recently on the original graphic novel RIGHT STATE. Artist Antonio Fuso previously worked with Denise Mina on the original graphic novel A SICKNESS IN THE FAMILY.
Praise for THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO:
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the rare comic book adaptation that actually works. If you've read the book and seen the movies, then you might as well go all in and check out Vertigo's take on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It's the story you remember, with a modern comic flare that gives a visual life to these characters." -- Complex Magazine
"Denise Mina (Hellblazer, A Sickness in the Family) is right at home here, diving head first into the Swedish crime series without any reservations of losing the reader along the way. Vertigo's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Book 1 is an enjoyable and intelligent crime yarn that is almost minimalist in its presentation." -- IGN
"It's hard to imagine someone better suited to adapt Stieg Larsson's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo as a graphic novel than Scottish crime author Denise Mina." -- Los Angeles Times/Hero Complex

A Dynamite first -- in April the Warlord of Mars comic series hit a milestone: One hundred issues have been released to date by Dynamite Entertainment, which is truly a celebration. But we're not stopping there. Dejah of Mars #1 arrives in-stores and digitally in May, and picks up exactly where the monumental #100 left off! The series is written by Mark Rahner, drawn by Jethro Morales, with covers by Jay Anacleto, Fabiano Neves and Mel Rubi!
In Dejah of Mars #1, John Carter has gone missing. And to find him there's nothing Dejah Thoris won't break. No one she won't hurt. No hornet's nest she won't kick. But the Warlord of Mars stole an important Helium artifact before he disappeared, so not only is the princess on her own this time - she has to get Carter before anyone else does!
"John Carter has rescued Dejah Thoris countless times, and now it's her turn to rescue him," says writer Mark Rahner. "After everything she's been through -- getting kidnapped by Tharks who wanted her for meat, outwitting a terrorist who aimed to ruin the peace, surviving a suicide mission among Warhoons - Dejah Thoris isn't screwing around. She's going to find Carter and make whoever took him pay. And Issus help whoever gets in her way.
The prevailing wisdom in comics circles is that ERB Inc. and Dynamite have been at odds over the latter's hyper-sexualized depiction of Dejah Thoris. But the truth is that Dynamite has been using John Carter-related concepts without paying ERB a dime, and the latter has sued. Now comes word that the two companies have settled out of court, and amicably so -- Dynamite now has the John Carter franchise for real, and will follow this series with an actual John Carter of Mars title. How about that?

THE ADVENTURES OF APOCALYPSE AL VOL1 (TPB)

Collects APOCALYPSE AL #1-4
Allison Carter is the latest in her family’s long line of paranormal investigators specializing in preventing the end of the world. Her grandfather and umpteenth-great-grandfathers probably never anticipated her father having only a daughter, but Al employs the same Carter wit, smarts and deadly accuracy as her male predecessors -- and then some. With an attitude of "shoot first and to Hell with the questions," she leads a life that would drive other investigators mad, filled with monsters, demons, trolls, mad prophets, zombie detectives, techno-wizards, machine-gun-toting imps and undead boyfriends.
In THE ADVENTURES OF APOCALYPSE AL by J.M. Straczynski and Sid Kotian, Al gains an unexpected ally in her latest case as she tries to keep a deranged artifact collector from opening a door into Hell itself.
APOCALYPSE AL is the third title in the Joe’s Comics line to be collected into a trade paperback, after TEN GRAND and SIDEKICK. While the prior two titles featured the dark side of Straczynski’s well-established storytelling skills, APOCALYPSE AL offers a fun and irreverent take on the supernatural, matched with Kotian’s lively art and Bill Farmer’s vibrant colors.
THE ADVENTURES OF APOCALYPSE AL collects all four issues of the miniseries. It will be in comic book stores on May 28 and bookstores on June 10.

Collects BLACK SCIENCE #1-6
SPECIAL LOW INTRODUCTORY PRICE!
In a string of big releases from Image Comics over the past year, BLACK SCIENCE was one of the biggest. The atmospheric pulp sci-fi adventure by Rick Remender (DEADLY CLASS,Captain America) and Matteo Scalera (DEAD BODY ROAD, Secret Avengers) debuted in November and has had multiple printings of every issue released, garnering praise from critics and professionals alike. The first six issues are now being collected into BLACK SCIENCE VOLUME ONE: HOW TO FALL FOREVER, arriving in comic book stores on May 28 and bookstores on June 10.
Anarchist scientist Grant McKay has defied conventions and done the impossible, using a device called the Pillar to punch a hole between dimensions that allows him to travel through all possible universes. But now Grant and his team are storm-tossed on an infinite ocean of alien worlds and long-forgotten, ancient, and unimaginable dark realms. With no clear route home, the only way is forward, through the madness of the lightning sea-swamp and a futurepast trenchworld, where the Sons of the Wakan Tech-Tanka wage never-ending war on the savages of Europe!
With an intense, mind-warping story in the vein of H.P. Lovecraft, action-adventure thrills à la Edgar Rice Burroughs, and fantastic Frank Frazetta-inspired visuals by the art team of Scalera and colorist Dean White, BLACK SCIENCE VOLUME ONE is a must-have for any lover of classic science fiction and fantasy.
Praise for BLACK SCIENCE:
“Black Science is best read tucked inside something respectable and boring. Why let the outside world know you're having this much fun?” -- Patton Oswalt
“Epic, anarchic, sci-fi greatness and the art is gorgeous.” -- Scott Snyder (SEVERED, Batman, The Wake, American Vampire)
"I think it's best described as VIVID. No. VIVIDLY WILD, with drama and humor. The art by Matteo Scalera is stunningly beautifully fluid and imaginative. And the masterful Dean White's color palettes and textures create an atmosphere of a dream-like lush. You must read this!" -- J.H. Williams III (Sandman: Overture, Batwoman)
"Just a big pure vision of science fiction wonderment. Comics to paint the inside of your eyelids with." -- Kieron Gillen (THREE, PHONOGRAM, Young Avengers)
“Black Science #1 is a riveting return to Rick Remender’s pulp sci-fi roots. … This Image Comics debut is an incredible first issue that spotlights the immense imagination of its creative team.” -- Oliver Sava, The A.V. Club
“Black Science #1 hits you hard from its very first page. It reads like a lost pulp masterpiece, like a well worn science fiction novel found on the shelf of a dank, used book store. It's a blueprint for a perfect opening, grabbing you right away and never letting go. It's whirlwind of color, violence and madness. When it comes to debuts this year, nothing even comes close to the stunning mastery of Black Science #1. This is what comic books are all about, people.” -- Benjamin Bailey, IGN
“Black Science is the action-packed sci-fi thriller that you have been asking for; striking art, compelling characters and a gripping story all in one book. This team of creators are showing off their experienced skills and hitting us with everything they have. Every single issue has been magnificent to read and no one issue has felt less superior to another. Black Science just keeps getting better as it goes on, sucking you as a reader, deeper into its inter-dimensional abyss.” -- Ian Stephen, All-Comic

Welcome to the "Chicago Organized Workers League" -- the world’s first Super-Hero Labor Union!
Kyle Higgins (Batman, Nightwing), Alec Siegel (Captain America, Avengers), and Rod Reis (Justice League) take readers back to 1960s Chicago, in a time when the once-celebrated superhero labor union C.O.W.L. struggles to maintain their public image and regain the confidence of the people.
A rise in “super powered” individuals dates back to the closing days of World War II after the deployment of the atomic bomb. In response, Geoffrey Warner (then known as The Grey Raven) spearheaded the campaign to bring heroes together in Chicago ... and struck a contract with the city for the heroes’ services. But while C.O.W.L. once stood as a beacon of hope against an epidemic of organized crime and a loose “brotherhood” of villains, the organization is now in a position where it must prove its worth to an ever more disillusioned public ... while overcoming great threats from both inside and outside its offices.
Although Geoffrey, aka The Grey Raven, is the character responsible for first organizing the heroes under one banner, C.O.W.L., he’s not the only character readers will get to know. “While Geoffrey is definitely a major player, both within C.O.W.L and within the story, the book is very much an ensemble piece, allowing us to explore C.O.W.L. from a number of different viewpoints,” said Siegel. “These characters range from some of the "top tier" heroes, to members of the Investigations and Patrol Divisions. We’ve also got spouses, reporters, Chicago Police Detectives, jailers, and City Hall.”
The concept for C.O.W.L. has been marinating with Higgins for quite some time. Its first appearance was in his college film, THE LEAGUE. “As someone who loves history, comics and crime fiction, 1960s Chicago was always the perfect era for C.O.W.L. In fact, it’s what got me to take the idea of organized superheroes seriously,” said Higgins. “Between the politics and labor unions in Chicago, and the rise of Marvel Comics, the early '60s are one of my favorite periods in American History.”
Higgins explained that the enemy the superheroes must face in C.O.W.L. is not the typical maniacal villain. “The biggest threat facing C.O.W.L. in 1962 is one of purpose. With the last of the great villains taken down -- and their contract with the city about to expire -- the union faces questions about their role in Chicago,” said Higgins. “On top of new mob-manufactured villains, jurisdiction battles with the police, internal leaks and a secret history that -- if exposed -- could topple the entire organization.”
Additionally, Reis’ art for C.O.W.L. departs from the traditional superhero-comic-style and was influenced by different time periods and mediums. "The idea is to use some of my influences of 60s' illustration, noir movies, and Graphic Novels from 80s to emphasize the feeling of politics and intrigue,” said Reis. “You will see super heroes in the book, but not the way you are accustomed."
"With this I project tried to play around a little with references for comics and illustration,” explained Reis. “Stuff like '80s graphic novels, noir and '60s illustration, to create a fun and exciting way to tell the story."
Praise for C.O.W.L.:
"Part crime drama, part Chicago history, part superhero epic, Higgins and company have crafted something truly special with C.O.W.L. A refreshingly original debut with scope, mythology and terrific characters." -- Scott Snyder, Batman, WYTCHES
“Gorgeous stuff. Keep an eye out for this one.” -- Kelly Sue DeConnick, Ms. Marvel and PRETTY DEADLY
“Rod Reis is doing an amazing modern riff on Sienkiewicz's painted stuff. Really excited to see where he takes it over the next few issues! -- Chris Burnham, Batman Incorporated
“A 'why didn't I think of that?' idea … compelling/fun/sinister. If Clifford Odets wrote Watchmen, this is what you'd get!” -- Marc Andreyko, Batwoman
“Mad Men with capes. C.O.W.L isn’t just a compelling Superhero comic, it’s an authentic American story. Higgins and Siegel offer up engaging, sometimes hardboiled characters that Rod Reis paints with aplomb. Definitely a creative team to watch! " -- Brian Buccellato, Detective Comics
“Cool.” -- Greg Capullo, Batman
“Great period-set superhero noir, with atmospheric Noto/Sienkiewicz hybrid artwork.” -- Declan Shalvey, Moon Knight
"Check out COWL #1 by Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel, & Rod Reis. Cool noir take on what happens to a superhero union when there's no more villains. Dug it." -- Nick Dragotta, East of West
“Really great. And pretty as hell, to boot.” -- Bryan Q. Miller, Smallville
“A styling first issue with a ton of brains.” -- Joshua Fialkov, The Bunker
“Great.” -- Gerry Duggan, Deadpool
“Mad Men with superheroes. Highly recommended.” -- Christos Gage, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
“Despite its ‘real-world’ premise and period setting, C.O.W.L. is not a Watchmen cover version, offering a decidedly less dour tone and honest-to-god superhero adventure blended deftly with its dramatic take on city politics. Sometimes it’s even really funny. Finally, C.O.W.L. bucks the origin fetish of the superhero genre by introducing us to its intriguing cast not at the start of their sagas, but at what might be the end.” -- Andy Khouri, Comics Alliance
This is just the beginning, with a Reddit AMA scheduled for 5/29, national press coverage, local Chicago and LA press, and widespread coverage in comic and entertainment blogs to come!

TWO GREAT TASTES THAT TASTE REALLY WEIRD TOGETHER!
Tony Chu heads to Wisconsin in two all-new original tales by the creative teams of both critically acclaimed titles! A great jumping-on point for readers who've heard how damn good these titles are on their own, and a twisted delight for those already in the know!
Enjoy a delicious blend of the two critically acclaimed series
John Layman & Rob Guillory, the minds behind CHEW, and Tim Seeley & Mike Norton, the architects of the gothic noir REVIVAL, come together to whip up an appetizing fusion of their New York Times bestselling and critically acclaimed series for two issues stuffed with adventure in a CHEW/REVIVAL cross-over from Image Comics.
Readers will find out what’s on the menu for Tony Chu when he heads into rural Wisconsin—where the dead don’t stay at rest and the living do their best to cope -- in CHEW/REVIVAL #1.
“In my head I've got a checklist of all my favorite books I want Chew to crossover with, if for no other reason than it gives me an opportunity to visit a world that isn't mine, that I'd nonetheless like to play in,” said Layman. “Revival is a the top of the list, and I'm stoked I've got the opportunity to send Tony Chu to visit. It's a fun opportunity to check out both books for less than a single issue of each.”
“When John [Layman] proposed the idea, I told Tim [Seeley], ‘no way. That will never work,’” admitted Norton. “After a while I thought about it and went back to Tim and said, ‘yeah, no way, that will never work!’ But then, I thought even more on it. I think the way we’re doing it is reminiscent of when indie books of the '80s would cross companies and appear in each book even though you’d never expect those universes to collide. It’s just a matter of loosening up and having some fun.”
Seeley added, “Chew showed us all that there was a place for quality off-kilter series, and we're excited to have the cast of our 'rural noir' meet up with America's favorite cibopath. I think we've figured out a great way to take advantage of the ‘WHAT THE HELL’ factor of crossing over two very different worlds that'll make for a great read."
“Honestly, even I was shocked how well the two titles gelled together,” said Guillory. “It's a really, really fun experiment that will surprise fans of both books, I think."
Perfect for fans of CHEW and REVIVAL who are hungry to try something new and a good taste-test for readers new to either series, CHEW/REVIVAL has something for everyone.

Collects NIGHT MARY, XXXOMBIES, SORROW, CREATURES, & SEA OF RED
8x12, OVERSIZED HC
Image Comics will unearth the horror work of writer Rick Remender (BLACK SCIENCE, DEADLY CLASS, Uncanny Avengers, Captain America) and frequent collaborator Kieron Dwyer (Avengers, Captain America) in an oversized hardcover large enough to crush zombie skulls. CRAWL SPACE OMNIBUS, clocking in at 616 pages, collects Night Mary, XXXombies, Sorrow, Creatures and Sea of Red and features the art of Kieron Dwyer, Francesco Francavilla, Tony Moore, Salgood Sam, Paul Harmon and Peter Bergting.
In Night Mary, a girl is trained to enter the dreams of the mentally disturbed to aid in their therapy. However, when Mary enters the labyrinthine mind of a serial killer, the boundaries between nightmare and reality begins to break down. Drawn by Kieron Dwyer, Night Mary is an unsettling work of psychological horror.
XXXombies is a grindhouse-style gorefest set in 1977 Los Angeles, where a man shoots his way through a zombie scourge to retrieve his runaway daughter from the drug-fueled underworld of pornographers and gangsters. Co-written by Tony Moore (THE WALKING DEAD), XXXombies is drawn by Dwyer.
Sorrow also draws from the grindhouse tradition, following a group of road-tripping friends who crash their car in small town and find themselves trapped in a bizarre, grotesque world cut off from civilization. Co-written by Seth Peck and drawn by Francesco Francavilla (Black Beetle, Captain America), Sorrow is a harrowing tale in stark black and white.
Creatures, drawn by Peter Bergting (Hellboy: The Rillhorse), and based on a painting by the master of fantasy illustration, Frank Frazetta, imagines Teddy Roosevelt as an adventurer who must thwart an alien plot to help an ancient Mayan demon destroy planet Earth.
The longest of the stories collected in CRAWL SPACE is Sea of Red, drawn by Dwyer, Salgood Sam, Paul Harmon and Francesco Francavilla. A shipwrecked Spanish sailor questions whether death at sea would have been preferable after he’s rescued by marauding pirates who hunger not for gold but for blood -- and turn him into one of them. Nearly five hundred years later, Marco Esperanza will finally get his chance at revenge.
CRAWL SPACE OMNIBUS will be in comic book stores on March 12, bookstores on March 25, and is available for pre-order now. This truly massive collection of horror by one of comics’ top writers is a must-have for Remender’s fans, and the oversized pages showcase this murderers' row of all-star artists in all their gruesome glory.
I was actually intrigued by this, despite my tepid interest in Rick Remender's work -- I mean, that's an awesome cover! But it's been scheduled and bumped so many times I feel like Charlie Brown and the football, and I've kinda lost interest. That's the downside of assembling these lists, I guess -- for most readers, this is probably the first inkling the book exists!

There’s a man digging a hole in the desert. Let’s see just how many bodies will fit. Orson Gage’s bloody revenge saga ends here.
Retailers have been selling issues of Rick Remender (BLACK SCIENCE, Uncanny Avengers) and Wes Craig’s breakout series DEADLY CLASS hand over fist. The popular new series follows a group of teens in 1980s San Francisco who are training to be assassins in the most brutal high school on Earth. Here, the world’s top crime families send the next generation of killers to be trained. Murder is an art. Killing is a craft. At Kings Dominion High School for the Deadly Arts, the dagger in your back isn’t always metaphorical, nor is your fellow classmates' poison.
Praise for DEADLY CLASS:
“Remender and Craig leave a lot to be mined with their newest pseudo-realistic thriller. This is a read that won't disappoint.” -- Meagan Damore, Comic Book Resources
“First issues, much like pilot episodes, are riddled with obstacles for creative teams to overcome. Deadly Class jumps every hurdle, and clocking in at 36 pages, is a lengthy introduction to what promises to be an brilliant and engaging story.” -- Lindsey Morris, Newsarama
“Deadly Class is one kick ass comic book. Amazing art, lettering, coloring and story. This is the whole package, folks.” -- Benjamin Bailey, IGN
“We've been waiting for Rick Remender and Wes Craig's Deadly Class for months and it was absolutely worth the wait... We're almost getting spoiled here with the story and art. Don't miss out on this new series. You'll definitely regret it if you do.” -- Tony Guerrero, Comic Vine
“Between the surprising story and the lively art, this is one class you won't want to skip.” -- Michelle White, Multiversity Comics

Collects DRUMHELLAR #1-5, plus extras
Drum Hellar. There’s no mystic experience he won’t have. No drug he won’t take. No bog man he won’t dig up and revivify in an attempt to unravel the mystery of the significant look that a peacock gave him; a journey that will ultimately lead him, his invisible ghost friend Harold, and his werewolf ex-girlfriend to a dead cow in a field, which will lead them to… Well, “The mystery is the mystery of the mystery,” as the old farmer says.
You’re just going to have to read DRUMHELLAR VOLUME ONE: BADLANDS AND BAD TRIPS by Riley Rossmo and Alex Link (the creative team behind REBEL BLOOD) to find out just what the mystery of the mystery is. This summer, the cult hit from the Image Comics’ imprint Shadowline will take you on the trip of your life, with ghost triceratops, floating babies, and prison riots.
Link’s dialogue crackles and Rossmo’s riotous art merges reality with hallucination in a tale of exploration and discovery that Multiversity Comics called “Damn near perfect.” DRUMHELLAR VOLUME ONE will be in comic book stores on May 28 and in bookstores on June 10.
Praise for DRUMHELLAR:
“Drumhellar impressed us right out of the gate with its cheerful mix of humour, psychedelics and the paranormal.” -- Michelle White, Multiversity Comics
“Rossmo and Link are perfectly comfortable selling their world as is, and frankly the book is infinitely better for it. Maybe the answers are just lying around the corner, maybe they are far off, and maybe they don’t even exist. Whatever the context, Drumhellar concludes its first arc in a courageous and thought-provoking manner that is sure to leave you salivating for the second chapter.” -- Zak Thompson, Bloody Disgusting
“Link’s knack for realistic, humorous dialogue and Rossmo’s truly unique artistic style marry up perfectly here, creating a book that is truly like nothing else on the shelves.” -- Craig Neilson, Big Comic Page

"A DOZEN COUSINS AND A CRUMPLED CROWN," Part Three
Not a new #1 -- not a reboot -- not a paradigm-shifting crossover event ... and yet, still totally worth picking up and reading, we promise!
"SKULLKICKERS is one of the smartest comics out there." -- Newsarama
In SOUTHERN BASTARDS #1, readers are welcomed to Craw County, Alabama—a breeding ground for bastards and the setting for gritty, deep-fried crime.
Praise for SOUTHERN BASTARDS:
"Jason Aaron and Jason Latour's Southern Bastards #1 was exactly the kind of pulp goodness I live for." -- Ed Brubaker (FATALE, Captain America)
"Can I just take a second to recommend Southern Bastards by the mighty Jason Aaron? Literally the best book I've read this month. Order!" -- Mark Millar (STARLIGHT, JUPITER'S LEGACY, Kick-Ass)
"Southern Bastards by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour made me both terrified and homesick. Fantastic start, boys.".-- Matt Fraction (SEX CRIMINALS, Hawkeye)
"Southern Bastards is perfection. There's this great, slow menace to it. Southern Bastards #1 is a perfect comic for you if you like to read... anything." -- Scott Snyder (WYTCHES, Batman)
"You need Southern Bastards. Jason Aaron is back to southern-fried grit and Jason Latour is showing he’s one of the best cartoonists of our generation." -- Rick Remender (BLACK SCIENCE, Punisher)
“The gushing about Southern Bastards is completely on point. Jason Aaron nails it (as usual), but Jason Latour is the rocketship here.” -- Jonathan Hickman (EAST OF WEST, Avengers)
“This series both pokes fun at and honors their shared roots. Aaron's gritty noir storytelling blends perfectly with Latour's sharp artwork, creating the ideal setting for a mesmerizing, down home crime story.” -- Comic Book Resources “Southern Bastards #1 is an engrossing first issue, an unnerving introduction to what looks to be dark, violent, and sad. In other words, exactly what you want Aaron and Latour to be doing. A proper Southern Gothic hiding in the skin of a trash genre, Southern Bastards is a must-read.” -- ComicsAlliance.

Collects UMBRAL #1-6
AN INCREDIBLE NEW DARK FANTASY STARTS HERE!
SPECIAL LOW INTRODUCTORY PRICE!
These are dark times in Strakhelm, but almost none of the realm’s subjects know that they are living under a shadow. The royal family has been slaughtered by shapeshifting nightmare creatures called the Umbral, and the only witness is a young girl -- a thief named Rascal. In UMBRAL VOLUME ONE: OUT OF THE SHADOWS, the monsters of legend have risen and Rascal’s only hope to save Strakhelm just may lie in the forbidden practice of spellcasting and magic.
Writer Antony Johnston (THE FUSE, Wasteland) and artist Christopher Mitten (Wasteland) create a fully realized world in UMBRAL -- from the palace perched atop a sheer cliff, to the haunts of drunks and smugglers, to the caves of Strakhelm’s labyrinthine underworld. The scope of UMBRAL is set to broaden, too, as Rascal and her friends -- a foul-mouthed female smuggler, a doubting scholar and a mysterious wizard -- embark on a desperate mission across the realm to destroy the source of the Umbral’s power, even as the monsters close in on them.
UMBRAL’s richly painted art, engaging characters, and masterful world-building create a story that fans of dark fantasy stories like Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal will lose themselves in. Its first volume, OUT OF THE SHADOWS, collects the first six issues.

An ORIGINAL SIN tie-in!
This May, the shocking truth about Deadpool’s family comes to light in DEADPOOL #29 -- an Original Sin Tie-In! And everything you thought you knew about the Merc With the Mouth is about to change.
Nobody knows the full story of Deadpool’s origin, or what happened to his family -- even Wade himself. Manipulated at the hands of Butler and the brutal Weapon Plus program, Wade Wilson was transformed into the indestructible killing machine known as Deadpool.
But there is more to the story. Before being fully indoctrinated by Butler’s offshoot of Weapon Plus once and for all, all ties to Wade’s past had to be severed. Now, thanks to the energies of The Watcher’s all-seeing eyes, S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents Adsit and Preston have uncovered the terrible secret of Deadpool’s family. And the shocking truth about their fate will shake you to your core!
“Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn have struck a perfect balance in their run on Deadpool,” says editor Jordan D. White. “They know how to bring the funny, but they’ve also been able to reveal the horrific trauma twinkie that lies just beneath Deadpool’s deep-fried batter exterior. To mix disgusting body metaphors in with that food metaphor, the particular scab that they’re peeling off with this story is covering a wound Wade doesn’t even know he suffered … and one that might just be too much for him to handle.”
What horrors lay in Deadpool’s past? And what will happen if they come to light? The earth-shattering truth about Deadpool’s family and their gruesome fate stand revealed this May in DEADPOOL #29!
I would actually be surprised if Deadpool did NOT kill his parents.

The Marvel UK heroes really make me appreciate Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko all the more. Presented with a blank slate, much like Lee had in 1960, the UK writers came up with a slate of incredibly boring characters who are generic, juvenile, irritating or all three. I doubt this attempt to upgrade them will succeed, any more than any of the previous efforts have (with the notable exception of Captain Britain, and it took three or four tries with him).

An adaptation of Franz Kafka's novel. Unlike the common cliché of Kafka's work, Amerika is not a dark and sinister novel, but a dynamic and colourful story, with a touch of absurdist humor. It tells the story of the young immigrant Karl Rossmann who, after an embarrassing sexual misadventure, finds himself "packed off to America" by his parents. Expected to redeem himself in this magical land of opportunity, young Karl is swept up instead in a whirlwind of dizzying reversals, strange escapades and picaresque adventures. Godbout's first work in English uses the clear line aesthetic he perfected in his series Red Ketchup.

Attack on Titan: Colossal Edition is an oversized collection of the first five volumes of the Attack on Titan manga series! Humanity has been devastated by the bizarre, giant humanoids known as the Titans. Little is known about where they came from or why they are bent on consuming humanity. Seemingly unintelligent, they have roamed the world killing off humankind for years. For the past century, what's left of mankind has hidden in a giant, three-walled city. People believe their 100-meter-high walls will protect them from the Titans, which are 10 to 20 meters tall. But the sudden appearance of an immense Titan is about to change everything. Weighing in at a massive 960 pages, the Colossal Edition contains the same material as the original volumes, but the story is printed bigger and on higher-quality paper.

An expert gamer is forced to play a real-life version of his favorite game in a battle to the death! Not only is the man fearless, but also his movements are precisely calculated, and he possesses a superior athleticism that allows him to entrap his enemies. As the action ramps up, it becomes apparent that playing solo spells one's doom!
Is “BIM” a common abbreviation of something? I never know whether this sort of thing is something everyone should know that I don’t, or if it’s something specific to the story.

The brutal Dr. Nishikiori forcibly marches Akira to the base of a huge pyramid, where he finds a mummified skull with huge fangs and scales. With Ohmori as a hostage, the doctor orders Akira into a narrow underground passageway. At first Akira thinks Nishikiori's just trying to get him out of the way, but soon he uncovers a secret that will turn everyone's ideas about the island upside down!
What’s interesting about this cover is that it seems to have nothing whatsoever to do with the story as described. It seems a pretty blatant “Look, fellas! Large-breasted girls in serafuku!”
I confess I had to look up "serafuku." On the off chance that I'm not alone in my ignorance, a Google search revealed it's the familiar -- at least to manga readers or cosplayers -- sailor-like Japanese schoolgirl uniform. I clicked on the top link (to Reddit) to see if one looked like what I expected one to look like ... and was pretty surprised. Sure, the uniform is what I expected to see, but what I didn't expect to see was real Japanese women posting porno selfies in those uniforms.
I was stunned. Why would girls want to post naked pictures of themselves? Not only is that going to complicate their lives forever, but they're doing it for free, without prompting! It's all voluntary!
I don't understand this brave new world sometimes.

WHY WE LOVE IT: Comics are full of outcast characters, but this is an outcast story, Clive Barker-style. True to this modern horror master's other work, NIGHTBREED is full of horrifying creatures that captivated us in the cult film and live on in this new story.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: Before FABLES, before ONCE UPON A TIME, Clive Barker created a secret town of monsters that live among us. Don't worry if you've never seen the film-Barker and writer Marc Andreyko (BATWOMAN, MANHUNTER) have crafted a story that all horror fans can enjoy. Add to the mix Piotr Kowalski's art (MARVEL KNIGHTS: HULK, SEX) and you can't miss this.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: The Nightbreed is a secret society of monsters and misfits that hide away from humans, but have been a part of this world since time immemorial. This series will explore both the past and the present of this clandestine tribe, unleashing new secrets and horrors as they fight to coexist with mankind.

Dragons were never this sexy! For fans of magic schools, fantastical creatures, and harem comedies comes Dragonar Academy, an all-new manga series about a boy who is trying to tame an unruly -- and very pretty -- dragon. Learning to ride and tame dragons comes easy to most students at Ansarivan Dragonar Academy -- except for first-year student Ash Blake, who is known by his fellow classmates as the "number one problem child." Poor Ash is the laughing stock at school because, despite his unfashionably large star-shaped brand that marks him as a future dragon master, he has nothing to show for it. His dragon has never appeared. Until now, that is. One fateful day, Ash's dragon awakes in full glory, but appears different than any dragon ever seen before -- in the form of a beautiful girl! What's worse, Ash soon discovers that this new dragon has attitude to spare, as she promptly informs him that she is the master, and he, the servant.
Ash's problems with dragon riding have only just begun! Dragonar Academy, which originated as a popular light novel series in Japan, is a growing franchise that is sure to appeal to fans of comedic fantasies like Zero's Familiar and The Sacred Blacksmith. Each volume is delightfully illustrated and includes color inserts.
I confess to never having found dragons all that sexy. I like dragons in stories, but they tend to be stories where the dragons terrorize people until Beowulf or Saint George or Thorin Oakenshield or Godzilla or somebody come along and cap them.

Paperback • 6.8" x 7.75" • full-color • $19.95 • MATURE
A poetic novel that plumbs the depths of self-doubt and technological fatigue
Julie Delporte’s Everywhere Antennas is a deeply affecting, sparely constructed novel, equal parts Walden and The Bell Jar. In soft, flowing colored pencil, Delporte shows her narrator coming to term with a rare and misunderstood sensitivity to the radiation emitted by the televisions, cell phones and computers that permeate urban life.
Everywhere Antennas is the portrait of a woman caught in the margins, struggling to balance the demands of technology and modern life with the need to find meaningful relationships and work. Roughly hewn figures, sketched in pencil crayon on brightly contrasting backgrounds, populate the pages of this flowing, emotive work.
With Everywhere Antennas, Julie Delporte proves herself to be a master craftswoman of heartbreakingly personal, beautifully literary graphic fiction.

With this graphic novel, for the first time in the U.S., ComicsLit brings over the latest enfant terrible of European comics, a mad genius, and for the first time, The Louvre museum is involved in a co-edition of a series of graphic novels, each a vision of this great museum by a different artist.
De Crecy, at the sight of the incredible richness of the museum's collection was overwhelmed and felt small and ignorant. The result is a story set thousands of years hence in a glacial period where all human history has been forgotten and a small group of archeologists fall upon the Louvre, buried in age-old snow. They cannot begin to explain all the artifacts they see. What could they have meant?
Their interpretations are nonsense, absurd, farcical.
"De Crecy is one of the brightest talents in French comics, not only because of the breadth of his whacked-out imagination and his penchant for absurd humour, but also for the detail of his beautifully coloured panels." -- The Guardian
"Mischievous humor. A great find." -- Library Journal
"A clever upending of the resilient myth that masterworks of art preserve the history and spirit of their era; the meaning of art, De Crecy suggests, belongs to the people who experience it." -- Washington Post
"De Crecy is a gifted storyteller whose eye for body language and ear for a funny line never fails him. He deftly combines art history, science fiction and simple philosophizing in a short but very sweet tale." -- Publishers Weekly

I haven’t read any Korean comics, so I don’t know much about them. Apparently, Korean comics are known as “manhwa” instead of “manga."
I know, and comics from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are called "manhua." Which means it's erroneous to refer to all of them as manga (although it's hard for Westerners to tell the difference). But saying "manga, manhwa and manhua" over and over is clumsy, as is "comics of Asian origin" or phrases to that effect. Maybe "Asian comics" or "Eastern comics"?
On an unrelated note, I'd love to see this title cross over with BTOOOM (above). The title alone would be awesome.

Something about this cover feels familiar, but I can't put my finger on it. Maybe those glasses just make the model look like Madame Cobra or Commander Cobress or whatever the bad girl's name is in G.I. Joe.

WHY WE LOVE IT: If you could take a pill and travel back to any time in your life, where would you go? Newcomer Shaun Manning hooked us with his fresh sci-fi thriller, illuminating the dangers of living in the past.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: If Richard Linklater directed a season of BREAKING BAD written by J. J. Abrams, it'd probably be pretty close to what Manning and Wieszczyk have built -- a tripped-out
psychological thriller full of scrappy antiheroes and some of the most villainous scum of all space and time.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: When a man from the future recruits average Best Buy worker Andrew Smith to help him create a drug that will allow him to travel through time, Andrew thinks he's found the way to erase all his problems. However, the power of nostalgia proves to be the strongest of drugs, creating an epidemic of addiction with Andrew as its unwitting kingpin.
