BARBARA GORDON: BREAKOUT #1
(W) Mariko Tamaki (A) Amancay Nahuelpan (CA) Karl Kerschl
LEAPING FROM THE PAGES OF MAY'S BATMAN #9 INTO THE NEXT LEVEL!
Framed. Outlawed. Hunted. The extralegal activities of Gotham's vigilantes have never been more dangerous. After Barbara Gordon is arrested for aiding the Bat-Family, she is shipped off to Supermax, GCPD Commissioner Vandal Savage's pet-project prison for all who oppose him. She will find herself alone, surrounded by dangerous criminals and equally dangerous guards, in a place where nothing is what it seems. The true danger is just beginning. ... Eisner Award-winning writer Mariko Tamaki and fan-favorite artist Amancay Nahuelpan reunite to deliver a twisty, unexpected Bat-book for DC Next Level.
Cover B definitely gives a "I'm not trapped in here with you, you're trapped in here with me" vibe. This is the first "Next Level" book that really interests me. Probably because it stars a character I really like. (Unlike, say, Deathstroke.)

BATMAN IN THE SEVENTIES TP (2026 EDITION)
The solicitation says there are 10 stories from the '70s, but doesn't say which ones. But they're (probably) representative of a pretty good era, when Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams revitlized the Dark Knight.
You'll note that Batman isn't wearing his utility belt on the cover. That's because the image is lifted from a panel in "The Joker's Five-Way Revenge!" in Batman #251 (September, 1973), where he'd just escaped a death trap where his belt had been removed. Aside from the image being flipped, it's accurate.
I note this because the image was used extensively in DC marketing at the time. Maybe still! I even had a jigsaw puzzle with the image. But in all the marketing, someone always drew in a utility belt! Which I noticed every time, because there's something wrong with me. "He's not supposed to be wearing a belt!" I'd say to the voices in my head. "You're right," they'd respond in unison. And I would smile grimly.
As you can see, when they re-used the image for the cover of Limited Collector's Edition #C-25 (1974), they drew in a belt. I suppose they had to, but li'l me was outraged that they'd tinker with a Neal Adams masterpiece!
DC FINEST: WONDER WOMAN — DAWN BEFORE DARKNESS TP
(W) Gail Simone, Greg Rucka (A) Nicola Scott, Aaron Lopresti, Various (CA) Nicola Scott
THE MIGHTY AMAZON MUST CONFRONT THE SINS OF HER PAST!
Award-winning writer Gail Simone’s critically lauded run on Wonder Woman concludes in this volume leading up to the series’ monumental 600th issue. Following the events of Rise of the Olympian, Diana must fight for her life and her birthright after she is ousted from the Amazons by Achilles in Warkiller. In A Murder of Crows, five mysterious kids with supernatural abilities seem intent on planting seeds of mistrust against Wonder Woman. And in Wrath of the Silver Serpent, Diana must defend Earth from an alien invasion led by someone with close family ties. Collects WONDER WOMAN (VOL. 3) #36-44 and #600, SECRET SIX #10-14, BLACKEST NIGHT: WONDER WOMAN #1-3, and a story from DCU HALLOWEEN SPECIAL ‘09 #1.
I have probably read all these issues, and have a Gail Simone omnibus (still in shrinkwrap) that probably includes them as well. I generally love Simone's work, but I don't remember anything in particular about this run. Maybe if I'd taken off that shrinkwrap and re-read it, I would.
IMMORTAL LEGEND BATMAN HC
JLA A LEAGUE OF ONE DELUXE EDITION HC
WONDER WOMAN'S ACCLAIMED, FULLY PAINTED EPIC RETURNS IN OVERSIZE HARDCOVER, LIKE NEVER BEFORE!
In JLA: A League of One, the Justice League will die in battle against a dragon — it is prophesized! Fearing what the future holds, Wonder Woman must defeat the JLA and slay the dragon single-handedly ... or risk its fated demise becoming reality. From Christopher Moeller comes the fully painted prestige fantasy saga and the fully painted science fiction mecha/alien invasion Cold Steel. Escape into in their beauty in the oversized hardcover presentation they always deserved. Collects JLA: A LEAGUE OF ONE and JLA: CLASSIFIED: COLD STEEL #1-2 along with brand-new introductory essays by Moeller, a sketchbook gallery, a never-before-seen dragon maquette from the making of the book, and more!
I seem to remember enjoying this when it came out 25 years ago, primarily for the art. But I also remember a thing that bothered me about the story.
A prophecy says the Justice League will die, so Wonder Woman kicks everyone off the team so she's the only "Justice League" left and only she will die. That's way too similar to the plot of "The Menace of Dream Girl!" In Adventure Comics #317 (February 1964), where Nura Nal has a premonition that the Legion of Super-Heroes will die, so she kicks everyone off the team so she's the only "Legion of Super-Heroes" left and only she will die.
Needless to say, lifting plot elements from an oddball Silver Age story isn't the swiftest of moves. Especially since, in both cases, a simple discussion could achieve the same thing without all the drama of kicking people off teams. "An Amazon prophecy sounds serious, Wonder Woman," Batman would say. "Let's all 'resign' until this crisis is over. Technically, there will be no Justice League, so nobody has to die." But noooooo — Wonder Woman has to beat everybody up. And the things Dream Girl did were just goofy (she turned some of the Legion into toddlers, as you can see from the cover).
JUSTICE LEAGUE RED TP
(W) Saladin Ahmed (A/CA) Clayton Henry
MEET THE COVERT ARM OF THE JUSTICE LEAGUE! The Justice League has a new spec-ops team so covert, the founders can’t know it exists. And its leader is the only hero who can keep it off the league’s radar ... because he is the radar. Red Tornado is the heart and mind of the Watchtower--watching, projecting into the future — and his projections point to an apocalypse as a direct result of the concentrated power of the JLU. When your Justice League ID card lights up red, Reddy needs you. For the fate of humanity, and for yourself, you’d better answer the call, because you don’t want to find out what Red can do with what he knows about you. Join a best-in-the-biz creative team— Saladin Ahmed (Wolverine, Daredevil) and Clayton Henry (Action Comics, We Are Yesterday) — to find out how far an all-star team of heroes will go to keep the peace ... and keep Red Tornado’s secrets.
I didn't get this one because I didn't buy the premise. Why would the JL need a special, secret sub-team? Tornado could just send whomever he needs to send on whatever mission he needs them for, under orders not to tell anyone else and to complete the mission surreptitiously. It's not like they haven't done that before. As long as you have plausible deniability, you're good. And they've still got those discreet Challenger uniforms, I bet.
Besides, how long do you think it would take for Batman to catch on? Or Martian Manhunter? Or Doctor Fate? It doesn't hold up to a second's scrutiny.
Plus, it's another premise that's nullified if the characters simply act like grown-ups and talk to each other. Sure, you can have a special sub-team, and even give it a title. But there's no reason Batman or Wonder Woman can't know about it. There's no reason it has to have a set lineup. "Justice League Red" as a concept is too contrived, and a gimmick too far for me.

DOOM’S ULTIMATE WEAPON REVEALED ON THE ROAD TO ARMAGEDDON!
Steve puts aside his mission to protect Victor Von Doom’s ultimate weapon from both the U.S. and Latveria, which puts him on a dangerous collision course with Red Hulk’s ALL-NEW, ALL-HULK strike team! But there are some wars not even Captain America can win…
Witness the spark that starts the fire of ARMAGEDDON in this can’t-miss issue!
I've been reading this title, and while I generally like Zdarsky's work and Captain America in general, the excitement isn't there. Cap's "voice" doesn't seem right, plus there's Red Hulk, a character I don't care for. I'll stick it out, so that I can understand Armageddon's premise when we get there, even if I ultimately tradewait it ... or don't read it at all.

"When Carnage hit the comic page it made you think Venom wasn't that bad," says Spider-Editor Nick Lowe. "Torment does that to Carnage here. He's not a symbiote. ... He's something much, much worse."

NO. 5: DARK HORSE
The high-octane mind of Rob Williams (Petrol Head, Judge Dredd) and full-throttle artistry of Nil Vendrell (Stranger Things: Tales from Hawkins, Shirtless Bear-Fighter!) bring Hidden Springs to kaiju comic fans this spring from Dark Horse Comics. Williams and Vendrell, alongside colorist Berta Sastre and letterer Simon Bowland (John Le Carre’s: The Circus–Losing Control, The Boys) weave a high-stakes story of unlikely heroes inside a limited four-issue action series. Featuring main cover art by Pallach, and a variant cover from Pye Parr (2000 AD, Petrol Head).
In Hidden Springs:
A retirement community field trip for a group of aging ex-Hollywood stars turns towards the bizarre when they encounter a baby KAIJU on the run from military agents. Bonding quickly with the creature, the cantankerous cadre of former celebrities have to somehow get the kaiju to safety—before it causes the end of the world!
“Hidden Springs is a fun chase thriller with a difference - the difference being that a bunch of decrepit old Hollywood actors, a Director, a rock star, a comedian and a guy who MAY have been a hitman, have to get a baby Kaiju back to its ocean home before the military lock them away for what’s left of their natural lives,” says writer Rob Williams.
“It’s a story about finding something vital and important inside yourself, something worth fighting for, just at a point in your life when you’ve become convinced there’s nothing left. It’s filled with characters I’ve grown to love and, collaborating with Nil Vendrell and the team, it’s been a complete joy to bring to life.”

THUNDERCATS X SILVERHAWKS #2
Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products today announce an exciting surprise update to the ThunderCats X SilverHawks comic book crossover event. Fan-favorite artist Drew Moss is dropping in and will be joining the expansive creative team, as the ongoing interior artist for the flagship ThunderCats X SilverHawks series past the first issue.
Writer and artist extraordinaire Declan Shalvey tackled double duties drawing the first issue himself. He stated at the time, "I felt it was the right opportunity to invest into the franchise a little more. Why let Drew have all the fun ...? I was also looking to write and draw something again, not having drawn a whole comic in nearly a year. The planets aligned, I guess, or Third Earth specifically aligned."
Now expanding the cockpit back to a two-seater, Declan welcomes Drew on board for more fun! The creative duo were at ground zero collaborating on ThunderCats #1 in February 2024 when it blew fans away and scorched up the charts. Comics franchise editor Nate Cosby tagged in a few guest creators for a string of acclaimed special breather issues between story arcs, but Moss was the powerhouse illustrating the vast majority of issues in the series for over two years, including several covers too. And he continues that signature association and run with the biggest story yet!"I am really excited to be working with Declan again and with these characters I grew up with," shared artist Drew Moss. "Drawing the ThunderCats for two years and now getting to work with the SilverHawks too is a dream come true!"
Declan Shalvey added, "Drew and I launched this book together and he has built this larger saga with me brick by brick over the last couple of years. I knew if I was going to do art duties on the first issue of this big crossover series, there is no one else who deserves to draw the rest more than Drew. I'm very excited to see what Drew will do on an event-level book like this and it's so cool to be drawing a series with him, and not just writing for him."
Following the un-spoiled events of the first issue and accompanying second and third chapters of the crossover in its companion titles, both the ThunderCats and SilverHawks squads find themselves reeling. The 'Hawks descend upon Third Earth, with plans to apprehend every 'Cat in sight. What they can't account for is the ferocious feline instincts of Cheetara!
One of the counter guys at my LCS put Thundercats in my pull list, thinking I might like it. Probably thought I was the right age to have seen it as a cartoon. I thanked him, but put them back.

This sometimes dark — but always hopeful — adventure by renowned author Zidrou and celebrated gallery artist Frank Pe portrays a beautiful friendship between a boy and his beast with a magnificent adventure whose heart is the extraordinary friendship that can unite a child with an animal . . . Captured in the heart of Palombia by Chahuta Indians and sold to exotic animal traffickers, a marsupilami lands in the port of Antwerp in the 1950s. Managing to escape, he arrives in the suburbs of Brussels and is taken in by François, a young boy who is a fan of animals and whose daily life is far from easy. François is picked on by the local kids, particularly because his father had been a German soldier, an unforgivable crime in those postwar years; a fact he and his mother cannot escape. Both are ostracized for their connection to past events. The authors pay a superb tribute to the fabulous animal created by Franquin in the series Spirou et Fantasio while denouncing the mistreatment and trafficking of exotic animals.
What kind of beast is that? A monkey-leopard?

THE FUTURE IS A RIOT! In the footsteps of JUDGE DREDD, V FOR VENDETTA, and TANK GIRL, the first great milestone in 22nd century science fiction is here! Written, illustrated, and hand-lettered by British comics virtuoso Joe Palmer (Time Before Time), DESTINATION KILL is powered by the thrum of a million gigawatts of nonstop visual firepower ... as rendered by one of the most incendiary visual storytellers in comics today. The year is 2125, and the all-powerful corporation Overcon uses its robot workers to pour our drinks and dispense our meds, all while rebuilding London's Central City into a hyper-modern megalopolis bolted together in its own image. But as Overcon prepares to celebrate the first year of its Paradise Loop — a superfast transatlantic train that connects the Central City to New York in under 60 minutes — an unwieldy army of displaced human workers floods the streets with weapons, plotting an attack at the anniversary gala. Enter: Gina Serene, a stressed-out, pill-popping police detective in desperate need of a vacation and her ex-partner turned P.I., Lance Wingman — who are now the only thing standing between Overcon's skyscraper-sized fist and the worker uprising that threatens to bring Britain's capital crashing down around them.

TISENA #1 (OF 6)
(W) TJ Sterling (A) Xong Bros (CA) David Mack
Main Cover by legendary artist David Mack (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Kabuki) A thrilling new series in the spirit of Super Sentai and Power Rangers, from Okemus creator TJ Sterling. Tisena — the last Okemus Hunter from the future — now calls present/day New York City home. But instead of fighting to save her own future, she’s focused on protecting ours. When Mesar, her only ally, is captured by the rogue military group known as Faction 6, Tisena must stop them from exploiting the power of the Okemus Hunters to create deadly weapons of mass destruction. As her search for Mesar intensifies, she crosses paths with Amara Andrews, a fiery and brilliant FBI agent searching for her missing sister, who is determined to help Tisena bring down Faction 6.
Wow, that's a lot of ... premise. It does have a David Mack cover, if that's any incentive. Of a girl who's Asian and petite. Who becomes Black and zaftig on Cover B.

YAN VOL. 3
Author/Artist: Chang Sheng
Publisher: Titan Manga
SC, 368 pages, B&W, $24.99
Winner of the Golden Comic Award, this third volume can be enjoyed in English for the first time as battles become even more intense and the stakes are even higher.
From award-winning creator of Baby and The Hidden Level, Chang Sheng delivers an elaborately detailed and genre-defying story alongside stunning artwork, to take readers from traditional Peking Opera performances to a dystopian Taiwan controlled by A.I.
Golden Comic Award-winning series Yan returns with its most haunting chapter yet. In a comic landscape where Taiwan’s graphic novel scene continues to flourish, Yan Volume 3 stands as a bold testament to the heights of storytelling the medium can reach and genres it seamlessly fuses.
Still reeling from revelations about her family’s brutal murder, the resurrected Peking Opera performer Tieh-Hua delves deeper into a tangled web of supernatural vengeance and time-warped conspiracies. As she closes in on those responsible, her bond with Higa-Mirai—a missing Go prodigy cursed with visions of the future—grows, complicating her pursuit of justice. Meanwhile, Detective Lei wrestles with a reality shattered by ghosts, time travelers, and corrupted power structures, forcing him to question everything he thought he stood for.
Set across modern-day Taiwan and a fractured, dystopian future, Yan Volume 3 pushes the boundaries of sci-fi, horror, and noir. With eerie precision and cinematic flair, Chang Sheng constructs a world where the past refuses to stay buried and the future is constantly rewriting itself.
Visceral, gripping, and unapologetically strange, this volume is essential reading for fans of supernatural thrillers and lovers of bold, innovative comics.

TWO MORROWS
CRYPTOLOGY #9
(W) Peter Normanton (A) Kathryn Leigh Scott (CA) Various
"It’s me again folks, the Cryptologist, creeping among the gravestones to exhume a few more juicy morsels! This time ’round, one of my favorite leading ladies steps once more out of the dark — it’s none other than Kathryn Leigh Scott, here to discuss her time in Dark Shadows — and what a treasure she is. To help her along, I’ve unearthed a few of those old Dark Shadows comics, along with a selection of trading cards to boot. Our history of pre-Code horror continues, and we also uncover those long forgotten Fawcett horror comics. Then we go back in time to the 1970s to rediscover those ghoulish Blaxploitation movies, before coming face-to-face with Curse of the Demon and the chilling Night of the Eagle. If you have a craving for a classic B-movie or one of Hammer’s scary offspring, look no further — they’ll be waiting for you in my crypt laden with the ghoulish from TwoMorrows, made just for you retro horror fans by editor Peter Normanton!”
Hey, look! Dark Shadows!

When did Vandal Savage become GCPD Commissioner? I mean, I'll accept costumed vigilantes and superpowers, but this notion that overt criminals could hold such positions seems a bit of a stretch.
Next thing you know, they'll be writing stories where gerrymandering results in one-party states where more than half the voters are disenfranchised. Preposterous!
Actually that Wonder Woman plot sounds more like Adventure Comics #304 (Ja'63), "The Stolen Super Powers!" where SATURN GIRL becomes leader, suspends everyone and secretly duplicates their powers so she can be the only Legionnaire who can be sacrificed to stop an alien invasion. Lightning Lad, remembering that he's a superhero, rushes to sacrifice himself to save her, dying in her arms.
Don't worry! He gets better!
I note this because the image was used extensively in DC marketing at the time... I even had a jigsaw puzzle with the image.
I was just about to say that! (In a can, right?)
...plus there's Red Hulk, a character I don't care for.
"Red Hulk" doesn't even exist on Eath-J.
BRAND NEW BRAND NEW DAY!
"One More Day" pretty much drove me away from the Sipider-titles for good. (I hadn't yet adopted my philosophy of serial alternate realities.)
GODZILLA VS. TEXAS
Oh, dear. I may have to look into this.
Probably thought I was the right age to have seen it as a cartoon.
Bwah-ha-ha!
What kind of beast is that? A monkey-leopard?
Apparently it's a Marsupilami.
I looked Batman in the 1970s up at the GCD. The volume might be a reprint of the 1999 volume with the same title and cover.
The stories the GCD lists as in that edition are
"There is No Hope in Crime Alley!" Detective Comics #457 O'Neil/Giordano
"A Vow from the Grave!" Detective Comics #410 O'Neil/Adams
"Night of the Reaper!" Batman #237 O'Neil et al./Adams
Robin/Batgirl "The Invader from Hell!" The Batman Family #1 Maggin/Grell
"Marriage: Impossible" Detective Comics #407 Robbins/Adams
Huntress "From Each Ending... A Beginning!" DC Super-Stars #17 Levitz/Staton
"This One'll Kill You, Batman!" Batman #260 O'Neil/Novick
"Daughter of the Demon" Batman #232 O'Neil/Adams
"Death Flies the Haunted Sky" Detective Comics #442 Goodwin/Toth
"Ticket to Tragedy" Detective Comics #481 O'Neil/Rogers
It is a reprint of the original 1999 book. Can't believe that was 27 years ago!
I checked in a couple of sources and apparently this volume of Iron Man is supposed to go to #7 at least instead of stopping here with #5. Are there news to the contrary?
At a guess it's my mistake. I added "(OF 5)" to Knull #5; I must've done so to Iron Man #5 as well.
"Barking" is British slang, short for barking mad.
One of the era's Rutland Halloween parade stories.
Back in the old days, that would have been a great idea for a thread.
I do have most of THOSE STORIES.
