NO. 1: MARVEL COMICS

DEATH OF SILVER SURFER #5 (OF 5), $3.99: Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit! Marvel has dumped the male Silver Surfer in favor of a female Silver Surfer! Just like the movie!  What a coincidence!

The Silver Surfer is dead. Long live the Silver Surfer.

The penultimate issue of DEATH OF SILVER SURFER, a five-issue limited series by writer Greg Pak and artists Sumit Kumar and Tiago Palma, hit stands earlier this week, revealing the identity of the hero taking up the mantle. In a surprising turn of events, Norrin bequeathed the Power Cosmic to Kelly Koh, a special agent tasked with taking him down. Kelly’s journey from alien hunter to cosmic hero is completed in next month’s finale, DEATH OF SILVER SURFER #5. With the Fantastic Four’s blessing, Kelly will soar through the Marvel Universe moving forward as the new Sentinel of the Spaceways! But first, she’ll team up with her predecessor against an ancient universe-ending threat borne from the sins of Galactus

“The Silver Surfer has always been famously one of Marvel's most emotionally tormented characters, and Kelly with the Power Cosmic absolutely follows in that tradition, ha ha!,” Pak shared. “But she's also got a no-nonsense, cocky, dangerous edge that makes her much less predictable than Norrin and a huge challenge to the villains—and heroes!—of the Marvel Universe. Dontcha dare miss DEATH OF THE SILVER SURFER #5 to see what's next for both Norrin and Kelly -- and the Power Cosmic!”

NO. 2: DC COMICS

JONAH HEX ALL-STAR WESTERN OMNIBUS HC, $125.00. Reprints All-Star Western (second series) #0-34. Have these been reprinted before? Feels like they have.

13751882701?profile=RESIZE_400xJUSTICE LEAGUE BY SCOTT SNYDER AND JAMES TYNION IV OMNIBUS VOL 2 HC, $125.00: I haven't read Dark Nights: Death Metal, as it appears to be the climax of "the Dark Multiverse Saga," or at least one of the climaxes, and I don't think I have all the parts. It appears this is one of those parts: "Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV bring their epic Justice League tale to a close before Dark Knights: Death Metal. Collects Justice League #19-39, The Batman Who Laughs #1-7, The Batman Who Laughs: The Grim Knight #1, DC's Year of the Villain Special #1, and Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #1-4."

Wait, what? All that "Year of the Villain" stuff is part of the story? Are there more parts I don't know about? And why do none of these hardbacks collect the seven Dark Knights one-shots starring evil Bat-coiunterparts of the original seven Justice Leaguers? So far I have only seen those collected in a random trade, which I did not buy. Why are they not collected here, or in a book with all the Batman Who Laughs miniseries and one-shots? I guess what I want is for DC to do the work of putting all the parts of the Dark Multiverse Saga in order for me, in a series of books with that trade dress, so I don't have to figure it out and collect a bajillion books with contrasting trade dress. All the while hoping I don't miss something important. I do have the Dark Nights: Death Metal Deluxe HC, which collects the miniseries, and I'm beginning to think I should just content myself with that.

And ugh, Cyborg is in this version of the League. That just makes my brain hurt. He's a charter member of the New Teen Titans, and that's where he belongs! If they need another black guy, why not Mr. Terrific? (I do appreciate the presence of Hawkgirl and John Stewart, though. Ever since Justice League: The Animated Series, they just seem to belong, more so than Hal Jordan and Hawkman.)

SUPERMAN RED AND BLUE 2025 SPECIAL #1 (ONE SHOT), $5.99: If you had told Leo Dorfman in 1963 what his "The Amazing Story of Superman-Red and Superman-Blue!" would become decades later, he'd have thought you were crazy. If you had told me that, I'd have thought you were crazy. But here we are.

ABSOLUTE COMICS

ABSOLUTE BATMAN 2025 ANNUAL #1 (ONE SHOT), $5.99: I'll have to get this, I suppose.

13751886872?profile=RESIZE_180x180I plan to keep reading all the Absolute books until Absolute Flash and Absolute Green Lantern hit #12, and the pull the plug. Unless some sort of Crisis or crossover does it for me. The only one I really enjoy reading is Absolute Wonder Woman, and I may continue with that. Absolute Superman and Absolute Batman are interesting, but not enjoyable enough. Absolute Martian Manhunter was a cool high concept, but high concepts don't lend themselves to long storylines. You need to make your point, let people go "Wow!" and get out. It needed to end with issue #6, as originally planned, and leave us wanting more. Absolute Green Lantern has been a not-very-interesting mystery box that throws around DCU terms like "Black Hand" and "Dark Circle" that have no connection to their original concept, which is irritating. And Absolute Flash has been, I hate to say it, boring. Anyway, here's the PR:

“Early adventures of the Absolute Batman.”

On sale October 29, 2025, Absolute Batman 2025 Annual #1 will feature stories about Absolute Batman written and drawn by Daniel Warren Johnson, James Harren, and Meredith McClaren. The issue will have a main cover by Daniel Warren Johnson, with variant covers by Nick Dragotta, James Harren, and Meredith McClaren (1:25).

How did Bruce acquire his Batmobile? What happened when Black Mask’s crew tangled with the Bat in those first few days? DC’s Absolute Batman 2025 Annual delivers insight into the raw, formative chaos from Absolute Batman’s earliest days.

PAPER GIRLS BACKPACK EDITION VOL. 1 TP, $12.99: This is another book where I fell in love with the premise and characters, but as the story progressed and moved farther from its starting point, and characterization took a back seat to a sci-fi plot, I cared less and less. But I still recommend it for the characters.

PRESS RELEASE: The bestselling, five-time Eisner Award winning series Paper Girls by the New York Times bestselling writer of Saga and legendary Catwoman: Lonely City artist Cliff Chiang will get a new look with the release of “Backpack Editions.” These eye-popping, compact editions will feature new cover artwork by Chiang and will measure 6x9 inches—the perfect trim-size to stow away in your backpack and pedal out of town with.

“I remain so proud of what my friends and I did with this series," said Vaughan. "And these gorgeous 'Backpack' editions (check out that rad new cover!) are a great way to introduce this emotional young adult adventure to your loved ones, or to rediscover new details from our twisty time-travel tale for yourself.”

In the early hours after Halloween of 1988, four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls—Erin, KJ, Mac, and Tiffany—uncover the most important story of all time. Stand By Me meets Lost in this beloved tale filled-to-the-brim with nostalgia, first jobs, time travel, and the last days of childhood. The series was adapted for television by Amazon Prime and starred Ali Wong.

UNIVERSAL MONSTERS DRACULA BLACK AND WHITE SPECIAL #1 (OF 2), $6.99: I already have the color version, but I'm still tempted to get this one. It's a B&W reprint of the first book in Image's "Universal Monster" series, and if it had failed, the line would have failed. Instead, it adapted the 1931 movie so beautifully that the next one was guaranteed.

PRESS RELEASE: Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics, in partnership with Universal Products & Experiences, proudly announce the remastered release of Universal Monsters: Dracula Black & White Special #1 (of 2), the acclaimed limited comic book series by writer James Tynion IV (Exquisite Corpses, Something is Killing the Children) and artist Martin Simmonds. The Department of Truth creators present their acclaimed Dracula series in stunning black-and-white, in tribute to the iconic film that changed the face of horror.

Originally unfolding over four suspenseful issues, the miniseries is presented here in double feature format, across two double-length issues coming this October and November.

The first installment plunges readers into the eerie world of Dr. John Seward’s asylum, where a new patient arrives whispering about a demon who has taken residence next door. As Dr. Seward struggles to apply logic to the madness, his surrogate daughter Lucy begins to fall under the dark influence of the twisted Count Dracula!

"Back by popular demand, we’re thrilled to be offering a special black & white presentation of the Universal Monsters project that started it all -- James Tynion IV & Martin Simmonds’ DRACULA!” said Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound. “Readers will be transported back to the days of classic cinema, and this hefty 2-in-1 printing pairs well with a nice glass of...wine!”

In addition to Dracula himself, this series also features some popular characters from the original film, including R.M. Renfield, Mina Seward, Doctor John Seward, Van Helsing, and more. The series has become known for its fresh twists, chilling encounters, and a dive into the dark corners of these timeless narratives.

Released to overwhelmingly critical acclaim, Universal Monsters: Dracula earned artist Martin Simmonds an Eisner Award nomination for Best Painter/Multimedia Artist (Interior Art). It marked the start of Skybound and Universal Products & Experiences’ Universal Monsters line, and was followed by Ram V, Dan Watters, and Matthew Roberts’ Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!; Michael Walsh’s Frankenstein; and Faith Erin Hick’s The Mummy. It will also be followed by additional new limited series pairing the biggest names in comics with pop culture’s most iconic monsters, including the recently announced Universal Monsters: The Invisible Man by James Tynion IV and DANI, which will debut August 27, 2025.

13749157275?profile=RESIZE_400xPRESS RELEASE: Dark Horse Comics brings together a stellar group of talent for an original, creator-owned series that bends genres. Creator of Babylon 5 and Marvel and DC modern legend J. Michael Straczynski, artist Tony Parker (Medusa, Mass Effect: Foundation), colorist Carrie Strachan (Hellblazer, Smallville: Season 11), and letterer Steve Dutro (Plants vs Zombies, Cthulhu Cat) invite fans to dive into a new dystopian scenario where the meaning of life is only as important as the definition of life. Synthetics Volume 1 arrives in October 2025 as a four-issue comic mini-series.

Straczynski gave fans a taste of what to expect within Synthetics. “The question most often asked in speculative fiction, but which is really at the heart of all storytelling, is: what does it mean to be human? In our story, for the first time, synthetic humans have been created in order to save the human race from its own mistakes, and the ripple effect touches all of our characters: police, scientists, the press, the rich and powerful and all parts in-between. The ultimate question is, can the synthetics help us survive, and can we allow them to survive?”

"I was excited to work with J. Michael Straczynski, and once I read the script, I became elated,” said Parker. “This work is a thing of beauty, and I can't wait to share it with the world."

In Synthetics Volume 1:

On a dying Earth filled with expanding dead zones, humans form rage gangs to vent their anger at futures lost. Others escape into the cyber-void to escape the existential dread of what's coming. The only hope for civilization’s survival rests with a new kind of human. Will their appearance in a desperate world be met with acceptance—or destruction? Are they angels, devils, or the latest iteration of Frankenstein’s monster?

CHEETARA: WORLDBREAKER #1, $5.99

June 18, Mt. Laurel, N.J. — The new era of ThunderCats tales in comics from Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products has brought countless new characters and exciting adventures to fans. The next massive mythos-shaking epic is set up this September in Cheetara: Worldbreaker!

Following her critically acclaimed first ever solo series from Soo Lee and Domenico Carbone and the smash hit that was the Apex special, Cheetara stars in another upcoming unforgettable ThunderCats one-shot. Packed with extra content (28 story pages!) and extra excitement, Worldbreaker also marks the franchise writing debut in comic books of regular editor Nate Cosby. He's been along for the whole ride of this new comics era across the franchise, overseeing and guiding the stories behind the scenes. Recently working with Declan Shalvey (ThunderCats) and Ed Brisson (Lost, SilverHawks) as they gear up for an upcoming HUGE storyline, Nate had some ideas about Cheetara that had never been told before, and the result is Worldbreaker!

"This story takes place in the past, present, and future, introduces new characters, and sets the table for the massive story to come," said writer Nate Cosby. "I only script when I feel I have something to say about a character, so Worldbreaker is particularly personal and exciting to me."

Paired by artist David Cousens making his Dynamite interior art debut, recently wowing fans on covers for SilverHawks and The Terminator, the creative team transports readers back to Thundera's Golden Age. Through this tale, Cheetara's mystical connection to the Sixth Sense evolves, from a terribly frightening force to harness to beginning to master the mysterious power. Though nothing will be able to prepare her for the shattering discovery of who else shares this psychic link with her, and that every power has a price!

Cosby and Cousens are joined by a set of psyche-shattering covers by franchise mainstays Declan Shalvey, Lucio Parrillo, Ivan Tao, and Edwin Galmon. An additional variant excitingly presents some classic animation artwork in a slick new way!

"It's great to be back! BARBARIC has been away for a bit, but we're returning with a vengeance. Our latest one-shot, THE BLACK KNIGHT, is essential to the BARBARIC story. We really start to see the bigger picture come into focus, and I am incredibly excited to deliver this into readers' hands. The art by Guilherme is out of this world, with fantastic colors from Fabi Marques. They help make BARBARIC return in emphatic fashion. All you followers of Axe, Owen, and Soren, get ready--we're about to go on a hell of a ride."

BARBARIC is co-created by writer Michael Moreci and artist Nathan Gooden. Among Vault’s best-selling series, BARBARIC has sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide and was named one of the best comics of 2021 by Entertainment Weekly, Thrillest, CBR, Comics Beat, & more. The story follows Owen, a bloodthirsty barbarian and his drunk axe as they roam an untamed, mythic realm battling supernatural cultists, hungry giants, creatures of the night, and more in their quest to somehow, amidst all this chaos, do some good.

BARBARIC: THE BLACK KNIGHT will hit store shelves this October and will feature incredible variant covers by fan favorite artists like Nathan Gooden, Luana Vecchio, Corin Howell, and more. The full synopsis can be read below:

An over-length one-shot featuring Flail, the talking…well, Flail! Deadheart, Serra, and Ka return after their (mis)adventures in Queen of Swords to defeat the evil witch Doxon once and for all. Too bad a familiar face…on a spiked ball at the end of a vicious weapon wielded by an ancient knight...has other plans. Someone isn’t making it out of this one-shot in one piece, so you should probably read it—IF you want to keep calling yourself a Barbaric fan.

  • Marvel has dumped the male Silver Surfer in favor of a female Silver Surfer! Just like the movie!

I doesn't bother me as much that the movie cast a female Silver Surfer as it does that they didn't even make the guy they hired to play Mr. Fantastic shave his moustache. Who does he think he is, Cesar Romero?

    EXPATRIATE X-MEN

"Expatriate X-Men"? Are you kidding me? What was it last week? "Radioactive Spider-Man"?

JONAH HEX ALL-STAR WESTERN OMNIBUS HC. Reprints All-Star Western (second series) #0-34. Have these been reprinted before?

I don't think so... not that I know of. You may be thinking of the Weird Western Tales - Jonah Hex omnibus (2019) reprinting All Star Western #10-11, Weird Western Tales #12-14 & 16-38, Jonah Hex #1-17, Justice League of America #159-160 and Amazing World of DC Comics #13.

Wait, what? All that "Year of the Villain" stuff is part of the story? Are there more parts I don't know about?

Eh, just buy The New History of the DC Universe #4 and be done with it, no muss, no fuss. that's what I did.

PAPER GIRLS BACKPACK EDITION VOL. 1 TP

I'm still disappointed that the TV show didn't catch on.

FRANKENSTEIN ALIVE, ALIVE: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION TP

For any Frankenstein fan who doesn't have the individual issues of the HC collection, I recommend this.

  • Wo wants to bet in a couple of years, the latest "Big Name" Writer will want to bring back the Norrin Rand Silver Surfer?

  • Is there any exact reason why Betty & Veronica #40 is getting a facsimile edition? I checked the GCD but got nothing!

I think I actually read Snyder's Justice League stories when they were published, and Dark Nights: Metal. I seem to have read SOME Batman Who Laughs stories somewhere; maybe I did read whatever Crisis that was where he was a player. I know I haven't read the Evil Bat-League one-shots and some other stuff that I saw alluded to in later books. And I did read a couple of Dark Multiverse one-shots, that were almost gibberish because I missed so much.

I will read New History of DC Universe as soon as Westfield sends me issue #4, and I guess Dark Nights: Death Metal, which I have collected and may or may not have read before. Maybe I'll re-read the Crisis, too, as soon as I figure out which one it is. That will probably do it.

Of course, none of that's going to happen any time soon, as I have 1940s JSA stories to read or re-read, and lots of 'em!

It's one of those books I trade-waited, and then forgot about. Every once in a while I stumble across one of those. Today, it was Grant Morrison's The Green Lantern. Never read it, and always meant to.

I'm guessing for the same reason two other Archie books got the facsimile treatment: The "good girl" art on the cover.

FWIW, I didn't care for Morrison's Green Lantern at all

I strongly suggest reading Frankenstein Alive, Alive! first.

  • Today PS Artbooks' Classic Horror Comics v9 came trickling in to my shop. I ordered the regular HC edition (and so did my LCS), but Diamond shipped the slipcased one. Because we both ordered the less expensive volume, the owner let me have it for the cost of the non-slipcased edition (which was nice of him, I thought). Incidentally, the UPC bar-code on the book itself is different from the one one the slipcase. (The difference is about ten bucks.) Still outstanding are...

    • Black Terror v2
    • Fight/Tiger Girl v2
    • Strange v1
  • I got all those fromInStockTrades last week. They were considerably delayed, however. Currently I'm waiting on Barks v29. InStock having trouble filling orders is a new phenomenon. Tariffs, maybe?
