Convention Stories

13769476091?profile=RESIZE_710xI thought I'd start a thread where people could post stories from their convention-going experiences. I figure it can be a mix of things, like:

Cool cosplay interactions with people
Non-"news" stories creators have told at panels
Interactions with a creator or fellow fans
Stories of great convention deals

Anything else of that nature...if it happened at a con, now or in the past, it's fair game!

  • I'll start with a quick story Alan Davis told during a panel at Baltimore Comic-Con this year. He was asked what the 2000 AD offices were like, in comparison to Marvel UK, back in the 80s. He said 2000 AD was fairly businesslike... but that Marvel UK was a zoo.

He told a story about one day he'd visited the Marvel UK offices, and someone threw a pot of glue out the window. It landed in the road, where it was run over by a bus. "It exploded," he said. "There was glue on everyone." People were, understandably, incensed. Davis said he looked around to see if anyone would take the blame, but the once-bustling office was suddenly completely empty. "They'd all legged it."

  • I'll have a blog to go with this recent convention, but here's my video of it:

As some of you may know, I have a lot of convention stories.

  • Had a great interaction with a retailer -- Third Eye Comics in Annapolis, MD -- about an hour before Baltimore Comic-Con ended. I'd had my eye on a Who's Who Omnibus volume 2 that I'd seen in their half-price bins, but I didn't want to carry it around, so I waited until right before I was going to leave. I asked someone, "Half price on this would be $75... is there any chance I could get it for $60?" She directed me to someone else, who was authorized to make deals like that. I walked over and repeated my question. He looked it over, checked the UPC symbol on the back, and said, "This is actually listed at $100, so half would be $50...so OF COURSE I can let you have it for $60!" He immediately added, "But how about $40, will that work for you?"

So now I've got both wonderful Who's Who references at my fingertips! These things are the definitive stuff for DC, as far as I'm concerned -- later revisions be damned.

  • I posted a blog that's partly about the recent convention and partly about a lot of other things that happened in recent days. But there it is.

I'll try to dig into my past blogs and con stories in the near future. A few might be worth reposting.

    • Yikes -- just 24 hours to organize a panel and making sure the guests had clearance to come? Well done!
