DC Losing the Milestone Rights?

Has anyone heard anything about this?

Scott Lobdell mentioned in an interview a couple of weeks ago that he was prevented from using Static in Teen Titans due to some sort of "rights" issue, and now there are rumors swirling that the reason Cartoon Network abruptly pulled Young Justice from its schedule this weekend was because of the heavy presence of Static, Icon and Rocket in the rest of the season.

I've been searching most of the comics news sites, but have yet to see any mention of the Milestone/ DC deal expiring, and I'm just wondering if Cap, MSA or anybody else has any definitive answers beyond the rumor mill.  It'd be a shame if these characters slipped back into comic book limbo again.

  • One other data point: When asked about the Milestone characters getting more fully involved in the DCU at the con this weekend, one of DC's big three (Didio, Lee or Johns, I can't remember which) said that they had a meeting scheduled with the Milestone people to discuss that very thing.

  • If so, it serves them right. They bought those rights a long time ago and did very very little with them, save giving Static his own title. Try incorporating Hardware or Icon into something, for God's sake. Or Rocket. Or the Shadow Cabinet. Xombi was canceled before it got its footing (and what a brilliant title it was).

I'm sorry, but this is one of the things that really ticks me off about DC.

  • I commented on DC's denial to market Static here and how they buy or license the rights to many different heroes yet keep them under wraps, treat them like second-class citizens of the DCU and never give them the same opportunities that they give their "house" heroes. Example: Why can't Hardware, Phantom Lady or Ibis the Invincible join the Justice League?

  • Agreed. They've really squandered some great properties, and the DCU would be a lot stronger if they didn't.

All three of those characters would make a much more interesting version of the JL than we have now, assuming they would be written well. Hardware himself fills a void in the DCU right now: an Iron Man-like character. You could say Steel fits that bill as well, but he feels like just another member of the Superman family.
