Disney Comics line

So , here's a line for discussion of Disney-based comics - Especially the " ducks and mice " , Mickey/Donald/Uncle $. , etc. , although if there's anything to say about a Hanna Montana or Pirates of the Carribean(Sic??) or Haunted amnasion comic , go ahead...

I bough UNCLE SCROOGE #403 to-day at the ol' LCS , it was the first of Boom's Disneys I bought in a while , lack of money and said LCS not seeming to be totally on the ball when came to getting everything in and Boom!'s confusing system of assigning stories to titles and just being unsure about what I read all contributed .

I haven't but slightly glanced at this ish , which features a lead story by Romano Scarpa and a back-up by Daan Jippes - Both new to trhe U. S. ??? - , both credited , story-wise , solely to them - Even the English dialogue .

I guess the Scarpa story might have been drawn with that late-20th century " album " format in mind , as it's shrunken slightly past the " normal " American comic-book story page size to fit in , somewhat proprtionately wider then , while Jipppes' story is more in the U. S. standard funny-nbook page size .

It's now " kaboom " for the line's name , not " Boom Studios Kids " . Why not "Sh-Boom " ( Um...Distracts your kids by making them shut up and read so you can have some peace and quiet !!!!! )  , na na na na na na na na na na , hey nonny ding dong , or does that not strike a chord ?

  • I haven't gotten into the Disney Boom books, as the higher price and lack of familiarity with some of the creators steered me away. I usually liked the Gladstone books, though, and I like a bunch of the other Boom Kids books, so I'd be interested in others' opinions of the Disney books.

I imagine Boom changed the name because kids don't like reading books labeled for kids, so they hid the name some. KaBoom is kind of clever, in that it alludes to Kids with the K and retains the Boom name.

I'm sorry to see they seem to have stopped doing Incredibles, or at least have slowed it way down, so I've got a Boom slot open if one of the Disney books is worth picking up.

  • ...Yeah , as far as American creators go , Don Rosa has retired* , and the ( seperately ) father and son with Dutch-y names who are the other North American latter-day Dis-creators of general fan note , um , it seems that ninimizing more traditionally " funny " , short , stories has overlooked...um , those two !...So , it basically all Europeans , I guess .

I commented about the dialogue credits because , it the earliest issues of Boom!'s Disneys , practically every story was translated by the same woman with an Italian name , obviously a lingistically skilled employee somewhere , when I was at Boom!'s Disney presentation at Wondercon 2010 they acknowledged her , when I asked...

  • Many of the Disney titles will probably re-emerge under the Marvel banner over the next year or so.  The Muppet Show and Cars already have Marvel editions coming this summer...I'm sure other Pixar and Disney properties will follow.  For the first time, comics have a significant presence in Disneyland and Disney World gift shops.  This was not the case when Gladstone and Boom were publishing, but Disney's purchase of Marvel seems to have changed that.

The Gottfredson Mickey Mouse collection from Fantagraphics will be the big Disney comic news this year.
  • ...William Van Horn is the senior of the two NA artists that I was referencing .

A suprisingly large number of the modern B. Disney titles are not indexed at Comics.Org , for a line with such a dedicated , established , fandom...

  • Wasn't Jippes' work reprinted in the Gladstone books in the 80s?

The current Disney line up in comics are pretty good.  I think they have a very SA feel to them and I'm hoping at one point to see a Justice Duck's cartoon.  The latest Rescue Rangers introduced a group that is almost the opposite of the Rangers and that looks promising.
    ...What's " Justice Ducks " ? ( My , presumed corrected , atpostrophe-ing . )
The first several issues of B.'s WDC&S had this " all the gang , bar Mick , as super-heroes " , arc and which was , then , switched over to the DISNEY'S HERO SQUAD title , you mean that ?????
Again , IIRC , all the " good " characters , bar Mickey hisself , were acting as SHs , some for the first time in America , some for the first time anywhere .
I suppose that storyline may be book'd now ???

Back when Darkwing Duck was on the air they had an episode where Nega-Duck gathered together a bunch of Darkwings villains and Darkwing (After frist going it alone and failing) responded with some allies.  Someone put the episode on youtube.

...Thank you ! That's new to me !!!

I was going to say , the heavy nostalgia - well , strong - for the Nineties-ish Disney TV cartoons that B. is now , seemingly , rather aiming for leaves me somewhat on the outside , I didn't " grow up on " the Disney Afternoon ??

...First , since I did not " Reply " them:
MSA: Yeah , I imagined that , that it was a contraction of " Kid's Boom ! " . Hey , a crossover with Katie Kaboom from Animaniacs offerrs itself ? And the Hip Hippos ? And ( Um , I've forgotten her name now...no , wait , I've got it...) SLAPPY SQUIRREL ?????:-)??????
PBM: Yeah , I would suppose so . Is he retired or dead ? BTW , checking what was listed at Comics.Org shows that they are , apparently , now maiden American-reprinting , IIRC , these Jippes remakes of Barks scripts from 1970s issues of JUNIOR WOODCHUCKS . Are they re-reprinting his material now ? There's something else this leads to that I won't go into here , for now...
As for Gottfredson strip material , I just , after my earlier session of posting , to-day , did some actual READING of funnybooks ( :-0 !!!!!!!!!!! ) , belatedly looking thru a belatedly got swag bag of this-year FBCD titles , all kids' stuff with no Big Two ,...and it included a Fantagraphics B&W CB of a 30s Mickey/Gottfredson daily story , I guess one that will take a while to be gotten to in the books' schedule ! A Gottfredson strip story !
I guess it was complete...except I suppose maybe lacking some " edges of the strip " recap/caption-style material , and definitely not having the individual titles for each installment that a 1930s daily strip would have , that's okay , for producing a different version/" tab " comic-book version , but are the books going to be ABSOLUTELY reproducing each daily strip exactly as they run , unedited , in the newspapers that ran them that way ???????????
As it was B&W , the Fantagraphics Mick/Gott CB was on fairly thin/flimsy paper , which leads me to something that I'm going to originate , here , now.........
  • ...*

-To , belatedly , respond to my asterik above , there is a smaller-scale ( Um , meaning " Not from Wizard World or Comic-Con " ??????? ) comics convention coming up soon , near me in San Jose , CA . Don Rosa is a guest there !!!!!!!!!!!

Frankly , I had read that he did not do autographs/whatever at conventions in the US - partly , frankly , because he's grumpy about the failure of his material to reach as large an audience/make him as big -time as he ( In his own mind , anyway . ) deserves to be in the US and so does not do " fan " things/promotional stuff on this continent.........Well...anyhow .
