Dog Day Afternoon on Broadway

31142456468?profile=RESIZE_400xYesterday, Kathy and I caught a matinee of the Broadway adaptation of Dog Day Afternoon, starring John Berenthal as Sonny and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Sal -- the bank robbers played by Al Pacino and John Cazale in the movie. It was a really entertaining day at the theater -- not as moving as the original, and leaning harder into a Stockholm syndrome comedy between the robbers and the bank employees. Aside from a few moments, the tension between the theives and the tellers never really ratchets up; Sal is the loose cannon of the pair, but despite threatening to fire, he never really goes off.

But that's more a problem with the script than the performances. Berenthal and Moss-Bachrach were both terrific, as was the rest of the cast, and the stagecraft, taking us inside and outside of the bank, and the liquor store across the street, was glorious. Also, Kathy spotted Alfred Molina a few rows behind us in the theater... so not only did the Punisher and the Thing rob a bank, but Doc Ock was watching them do it!
