BABS, A Sword & Sorcery Satire, with AHOY Comics

12386255276?profile=RESIZE_180x180

(W) Garth Ennis (A/CA) Jacen Burrows.

Garth Ennis, the award-winning award-winning writer of Hitman, The Punisher, Sara and Marjorie Finnegan, Temporal Criminal, and co-creator of The Boys and Preacher, is teaming up with acclaimed artist and frequent collaborator Jacen Burrows (Crossed, The Ribbon Queen) for BABS, a sharp satire of sword & sorcery. The six-part mini-series will debut from AHOY Comics, a Syracuse-based publisher specializing in humorous takes on horror, space opera, social satire, and superheroes.

“Writing BABS was an absolute hoot,” said Ennis. “The character is one of my favorite types—good at the job but crap at life, with a lousy attitude to boot—and the world of Sword & Sorcery provides endless opportunities for deeply disrespectful humor. Having our heroine smash her way through goblins, ogres, imps, incels and other vermin was extremely satisfying; nobody’s going to be Making Middle Earth Great Again while she’s around."

The series introduces Babs, a skilled barbarian thief with an itchy metal wardrobe and the world's worst enchanted sword (named Barry). Together Babs and Barry travel the highways and byways of a fabulous fantasy universe—a world of wizards and dragons, trolls and demons, towering palaces and piles of magic treasure—aiming to strike it rich. But Tiberius Toledo, and his band of very white knights, have different plans. While enacting her latest half-assed get-rich-slow scheme, Babs uncovers Toledo’s foul plot to exploit the baser instincts of the local townsfolk, landing her headfirst into an epic battle. Babs wasn’t looking for a fight…but then again, she’s never found a bad situation she couldn’t make a hundred times worse...

BABS artist Jacen Burrows has worked extensively with Alan Moore and Garth Ennis on projects including The Ribbon Queen, Crossed, Neonomicon, and Providence.

“I've been lucky enough to work in a lot of genres over the years but I have always wanted to work on a fantasy story,” said Burrows. “I'm having such a great time getting to design the world and characters and I can't wait to take readers on this wild ride.  The humor, the action, the wild creatures, and settings, this really is a dream project for me!”

“Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows master the genre of orcs, dragons, and living swords, adding an ill-gotten bounty of humor and heart,” said AHOY Comics Editor-in-Chief Tom Peyer. “Babs herself—an outsized spirit of greed, frustration, courage, and comic violence—will linger in your memory.”

Best selling artists Chris Burnham (Batman Inc, Nameless) and Amanda Conner (Harley Quinn, The Pro) will both provide a variant cover for the debut issue. BABS #1 will land in stores on July 17, 2024, ahead of Comic Con International.

VAULT ANNOUNCES BARBARIC VS DEATHSTALKER CROSSOVER ONE-SHOT FOR JULY 2024

Missoula, MT, 04/25/2024 - Vault is thrilled to announce a Barbaric vs. Deathstalker one-shot is coming to comic book stores everywhere on July 24th, 2024. Co-written by Michael Moreci & Tim Seeley, drawn by Nathan Gooden, colored by Fabi Marques, and lettered by Jim Campbell, the epic overlength issue features two of the most iconic sword and sorcery heroes locked in epic battle! Cursed barbarian versus warrior king! Axe versus sword! Owen versus Deathstalker! When an evil wizard summons the two most reluctant heroes of all time, they'll have to square off. But a clash of steel alone may not decide the final victor.

"As a kid who grew up on Guns N' Roses and considered Slash to be pretty much one of the coolest people on the planet,” said Barbaric co-creator, Michael Moreci. “Having a chance to collaborate with him is more than I could have ever hoped for. Couple that with Deathstalker, one of the coolest so-bad-its-good sword and sorcery movies ever (and as most know, I love sword and sorcery), this is a dream pairing. You've got Barbaric, Slash, and Deathstalker all in one place--I can't think of much cooler than that. And, obviously, we all know Owen and Axe will come out on top!"

The Deathstalker comic book series, in stores now, is presented by Vault in partnership with Slash of Guns N’ Roses, Shout! Studios, and Raven Banner Entertainment. Based on a story by writer, director, and legendary creature effects artist Steven Kostanski (Psycho Goreman, The Void), the Deathstalker comic reunites the team from Vault’s hit weird western series, West of Sundown, bestselling writer Tim Seeley (Grayson, Hack/Slash, Money Shot) and acclaimed artist Jim Terry (Come Home, Indio).

Barbaric is co-created by writer Michael Moreci and artist Nathan Gooden. Among Vault’s best-selling series, Barbaric has sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide and was named one of the best comics of 2021 by Entertainment Weekly, Thrillest, CBR, Comics Beat, & more. The story follows Owen, a bloodthirsty barbarian and his drunk axe as they roam an untamed, mythic realm battling supernatural cultists, hungry giants, creatures of the night, and more in their quest to somehow, amidst all this chaos, do some good.

Barbaric Vs. Deathstalker will feature a gorgeous set of variant covers from Barbaric artist and co-creator Nathan Gooden, and Deathstalker artist Jim Terry.

The full synopsis for the Barbaric vs Deathstalker can be read below:

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

Jonny Quest's Adventures Continue in Ongoing Series by Joe Casey!

Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Original Series!

Fans are invited to join the adventuring party of Jonny Quest and crew this August alongside fan-favorite writer Joe Casey and brilliant artist Sebastián Piriz. The tale celebrates the six incredible decades of Jonny Quest fandom and follows the issue #0 prelude story with approximately 80,000 copies released for Free Comic Book Day this May.

Climb aboard the Sea Quest and get ready to embark on a journey like no other. Legendary boy explorer Jonny Quest is back in action, and joined by the whole beloved cast originally created for the Hanna-Barbera animation line by comic book legend Doug Wildey.

Jonny's father, Dr. Benton Quest, is a genius scientist often leading the way. “Race” Bannon is a special agent tasked with protecting Jonny and teaching him a range of skills. Hadji is the orphaned adopted son of Dr. Quest, and Jonny’s brother. Last, but certainly not least, Jonny’s dog Bandit is always along for the ride.

This batch of characters are all back in four color pages, and they'll be joined by even more unexpected faces as writer Joe Casey hews close to the original spirit of the series, while using a modern storytelling approach in his signature style. This comic series picks up where the original animated series left off in 1964, but fans will be surprised as things quickly take a turn for the uncanny! Now Dynamite and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products kick off a new era for the franchise!

"The hope is that we’re maintaining the bouncy spirit of the original TV show," said Casey. "From one episode to the next, Jonny Quest always had a particular dramatic rhythm that was completely unique. We want our book to have that same kind of vibe. Plus, the fact that Benton and Jonny are father and son automatically makes this a generational story. We’re taking that angle and really running with it, taking that specific generational aspect to the extreme in ways that, we think, deepen the characters and give them the proper amount of gravitas that we demand from our beloved genre fiction."

Joe Casey is a certified legend with plenty of experience bringing comics inspired stories to animation and vice versa. As part of the creative group Man of Action, he's played a role in creating iconic franchises like Ben 10 and Generator Rex. In comics, Casey has tackled many of the industry's top titles, while always finding time for his own creations too. He's written for titles including Uncanny X-Men, Adventures of Superman, Incredible Hulk, Cable, WildC.A.T.s, G.I. Joe, as well as Gødland, All-America Comix, and others.

Casey's major co-star on the title is rising artist Sebastián Piriz (We Ride Titans, Deadweights). His fantastic, fluid artwork has been wowing plugged in fans for a while with his fan art, commissions, and process shared on social media. Dynamite and the whole team are excited about Quest being perhaps his biggest showcase yet for fans to enjoy his perfectly matched style.

The title is enhanced by a roster of fully frameable covers by industry luminaries including Chad Hardin (Harley Quinn), Jae Lee, Tom Raney, Bob Layton, and Richard Pace. More surprises may be around the corner, as Dynamite invites some of the most fun names in comics to tackle this icon.

JONNY QUEST #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ June 2024 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in August 2024. Comic book fans are encouraged to preorder copies of the book with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!

THE POWERPUFF GIRLS #2

The Powerpuff Girls Comic Gets Two Exciting Updates!

Beautiful Connecting Covers & Interior Artist News

In time for Cartoon Network's The Powerpuff Girls' 25th anniversary, Dynamite and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products have two key updates for The Powerpuff Girls fans as the hotly anticipated comic book series approaches its debut, spotlighting two incredible artistic features.

Some eagle-eyed fans may have been able to guess this first bit of news. Karen Darboe's jaw-dropping cover for the first issue featured just Bubbles, whereas each other cover for the debut has the complete iconic trio. Dynamite can confirm that not only are Karen's next two covers for the second and third issues portraying Blossom and Buttercup, but that the set are in fact a single connecting piece for fans to collect and complete for their collections! In addition to the titular trio, the covers also spotlight three of the most iconic villains in the franchise with HIM, Mojo Jojo, and Sedusa.

In addition to her beautiful covers, fans can look forward to even more of Darboe's artwork in the series thanks to the other big update. Kelly Thompson's stories on the series will feature a new unique artist on each and every issue. Darboe herself tags in for the second one, following Paulina Ganucheau kicking off the party. Then Miriana Puglia finishes off the initial salvo for issue #3's interior artwork.

"This project has to be one of my all-time favorites I've taken part in!," said artist Karen S. Darboe. "Being usually oriented to a more realistic style of drawing made this project quite challenging since I was faced with something on the total opposite of the spectrum. I really wanted to honor this fun series I grew up with which, on the top of everything, brought me closer to my two longest standing friends I used to play with! In fact, as soon as the first cover was revealed, I immediately sent it to them remembering the good old days when we wanted to be super heroines like Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup!"

Darboe's covers for the second and third issue, alongside her and Puglia's story artwork, will be joined by more outstanding covers by Ganucheau, Leonardo Romero, and Nicoletta Baldari.

POWERPUFF GIRLS #2 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ June 2024 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in August 2024. Comic book fans are encouraged to preorder copies of the book with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!

New Yorkers have quickly become "believers" as hordes of SWEETIE'S fans adoringly line up outside the wildly popular lower east side "SWEETIE CANDY VIGILANTE" sweet shop, anxiously waiting to savor the latest delectable SWEET TREAT drop.

"DREC ACTION! NEWS," the namesake news network of a corporate media conglomerate owned and controlled by the corrupt mayor of NYC crashes the party and quickly gets schooled that it's impolite to show up without an invite! It's clear to Candy Wolf, Pixie, and Tinsel that the news crew's objective is to stage an ambush interview with SWEETIE, the Candy Vigilante squad, and their newly minted fans, with the intent of maligning Sweetie and her business on nationally syndicated TV.

At the helm is the mayor's self-centered, saccharine-laced daughter-turned-news anchor, Athena Dreck. Acting under direct orders from her love interest (and Sweetie's arch-nemesis) - the dour, perpetual schemer, crime lord Bart Volgare - Athena arrives at the shop with camera crew in tow to portray the uplifting sweets as "unhealthy" and "addictive." Unfazed, our GOOD-natured Sweetie lets the "jelly roll" and flips Athena's script. Awe-struck and caught in Sweetie's hypnotic gaze, does Athena believe in her magic? Will she "bite" on Sweetie's challenge to sample her latest treats while on LIVE TV, inevitably revealing to her viewers if she's a good witch or a bad witch...?

Will the Mayor and Bart feel the sweet heat of the people? Is Bart's obsession with Sweetie unjustified? Is her mission to bring the sweetness back to the city a clear and present danger to Volgare's unsavory power and greed? Much to the displeasure of the salty lords of corruption, something within Sweetie's delicacies is having an incredibly GOOD impact on the population of NYC, and in the process, she's becoming more powerful!

DOES SWEETIE HAVE A KRYPTONITE - AND IS BART ON THE TRAIL OF IT?

PICK UP VOL. 2, ISSUE #4, "THE CITY THAT ALWAYS SWEETS," TO FIND OUT ALL THIS AND LOTS MORE GUMDROPS!

Also includes a FREE MP3 download of "THE LAND OF HATCHY MILATCHY," the new single by OSAKA POPSTAR recorded specifically for this series! Isn't that NICE?

VAULT COMICS

VAULT ANNOUNCES SPICY MATURE READERS IMPRINT, THRESHOLD. CORIN HOWELL’S LILITH SERIES TO BE LINE'S FLAGSHIP DEBUT

Missoula, MT (05/20/2024) - Vault has announced a new mature readers imprint, Threshold, under which the publisher will release spicy comics for adult readers. The first title under the new imprint will be Lilith, a phenomenal sexy horror series written and drawn by Corin Howell, with colors by Warnia Sahadewa, letters by Jim Campbell, and design by Tim Daniel.

The Threshold imprint will maintain Vault’s well-known and beloved focus on genres such as science fiction, fantasy, and horror, but with a spicy new twist. Lilith is just the first of many Threshold series to be announced in the coming months.

The character of Lilith, created by Howell, is a genuine social media phenomenon. Howell’s Lilith illustrations have become a phenomenon, garnering millions of likes on Howell’s social platforms, making Lilith one of the most popular original illustrated characters on social media. And now, Lilith will be the star of her own unforgettable comic book series.

Lilith is an immortal who's been banished from her home, a dimensional plane suspiciously similar to mankind's idea of hell. She's been posing as a model on Earth while secretly preying on humans. That is, until she runs into Penelope, a sweet bookstore owner with a tome that might hold the secret to returning Lilith to her home dimension. If the mismatched pair doesn't end up falling in love first!

“I work primarily in horror, I love monsters and creature features, and drawing it used to give me some semblance of calm, but the ease was always short-lived,” said Howell. “Until one night, when watching YouTube videos and doodling on my iPad. I decided to stray away from the usual monster and creature prompts and dive into drawing a beautiful woman with black hair, an appetite for blood, and piercing red eyes. I found myself at ease, more so when drawing her in red, her outfit blending with the background similar to the style of Rene Grau, and the only thing indicating her shape was the splatter of black “blood” that soaked her figure. It was a “Screw it,” moment when I threw her out onto social media, thinking, “Whatever, no one's gonna like this.

“I completely and utterly underestimated the internet.

“The positive feedback kind of motivated me to try another piece, and again I was met with ease in my mind when setting down more lines of her devilish figure. Adding a severed head was a cherry on top, something funny to indicate that perhaps she killed an unfaithful lover or maybe he just pissed her off that day. With every new illustration, I found myself having fun drawing this little lady and started pondering whether or not she needed a name. One night, when talking to my friend Sasha online, she shared her thoughts, “She looks like a ‘Lilith’.” And since then, it stuck. Simultaneously, Lilith’s story developed into this journey of how a cold, distant monster finds companionship, and along the way learns to move on from her past.”

Lilith #1 will hit store shelves in August 2024. The debut issue will feature an incredible line of variant covers drawn by legendary artists Jae Lee, Tula Lotay, Zoe Thorogood, Angela Wu, and more.

DRAWN & QUARTERLY

YELLOW HC

12208342299?profile=RESIZE_400xUpon the success of Lost Boy, renowned music video director and storyboard artist Jay Martin partners with Dark Horse once more to present his new adventure, Yellow! This is a beautifully haunting story of humanism set against the backdrop of a war-torn America in an alternate future. Along with story, art and color by Jay Martin, the book also features letters by Frank Cvetkovic.

Set in an alternate future amid a Second Civil War, wounded infantryman Nick Carson flees the battlefield and escapes across the wasteland of war-torn America. Branded a coward and marked for death, Nick’s only hope is to get to the other side. His route takes him through a strange, ravaged country where power plants lay destroyed and once great cities have gone dark–an America at war with itself.

Yellow explores what happens when society falls apart, when there is no law and order. Do we fall to our basic instincts, or can we rise above? As Nick travels, he encounters both good and evil and must choose which path he will follow.

The Yellow hardcover, which measures 6.625 x 10.1875” and contains 208 pages, will be available in bookstores May 14, 2024 and in comic shops May 15, 2024. It is available for pre-order now on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and at your local comic shop and bookstore and will retail for $24.99.

Praise for Lost Boy:

“LOST BOY has the kind of evocative art and hypnotically assured pacing I envy, compellingly introducing Jay Martin onto the comics scene as a talent to watch.” — Pornsak Pichetshote
