eBay Knows Me (A Little Too Well)

After winning an auction for the complete Firestorm series, eBay offered me some suggestions for other items I might be interested in:

Exiles 1-100 (already have it)

the complete Supreme (already have it)

the complete Dynamo 5 (already have it, and the T-shirt as well)

There were a few misses in their list of suggestions but it was a little eerie overall.

  • I won an auction today on a lot of Spectacular Spider-man comics, my recommendations were all for other Spider-man auctions, which is about right for me.

  • Nice. What issues did you get? I've got half an eye on collecting Spectacular Spider-Man from the '80s but my wish list is long and that's not at the top of it yet.
  • If I may butt in ... Anything before Sal Buscema went on his multi-year run is a good Spectacular Spider-Man to me. His art just killed the book.

I'm particularly a fan of the issues that start with Cloak & Dagger's intro (64) all the way through 129. That covers Bill Mantlo's run (which is really some of his best stuff) and ends with Peter David's first run (He shows up a little later when Buscema takes over). In between, you get the Octopus-Owl Gang War, the development of the Black Cat's weird crush on Spider-man (but not Peter), a great Blob story, the intro to the Answer, the Sineater Saga, Puma versus the Beyonder and a fun take on Rashomon.

And just a little beyond those issues you have Kraven's Last Hunt before Sal takes over on the art chores.

Sal was a bad choice to take the penciling duties, and IMHO he and his writers rode the wave of success "Amazing" was having. While MacFarlane and Larsen were redefining how Marvel presented Spider-Man, Sal was just offering a stiff, clunky superhero.

  • It's mostly a random lot of 69 issues.

Here are the numbers fron the bid description:

    ANNUALS #8,9,11,12,13.  ISSUES 94,112,124,139,148,149,150,151,154,155,156,157,159,161,167,168,169,170,171,

    172,173,174,175,176,177,178,179,180,181,182,183,184,185,186,187,188,189,190,191,192,193,194,195,

    196,197,199,200,201,203,204,205,206,207,209,210,211,212,213,214,217,218,226,237,AND 238

I counted that I have about 13 of them but that's ok. It fills in nicely to what I already have. I really wanted to focus on Amazing Spider-man but I got out bid on all the lots I wanted. So I decided to try for Spectacular.

  • I'd agree with your assessment, LJ. I don't have a comprehensive knowledge of Spider-Man but my impression from the issues I have read is the same as yours.
  • Most of what I've read of Spectacular Spider-man was Sal Buscema's run. There were more progressive art and stories were available in other Spidey titles at the time. However, I've enjoyed the issues of Spectacular Spider-man (Buscema run) I've read. They're solid pieces of work. Nothing world shattering but they work nicely when I need my Spider-man fix.

  • Cool.  I hope you have a lot of fun reading your new comics.

  • Thanks. Hope you enjoy reading your Ebay win as well.
