O Capn' , on occasion when I journey to your employer's page , I see reference to the Com'l Apel as being a " Mid-South " paper , that is the phrase it uses for the area it covers .
Just now , I noticed an ad for a chain of tanning -arlors on the CA's page referring to " 1`2 Mid-South Locations ", so advertisers use it too .
I believe I have seen a social club covered refer to itself as " Mid-South " , so someone other than your quite excellent employer and its advertisers uses it...
Somehow , I would have thought of Memphis , or indeed TN in general as the " UPPER South " , not the " MID-South " (emphasis - but of course !!!!!!!!! mine) .
Now , as far as " Perhaps Puzzling Terms A Newspaper One Has Some Connection With Uses , In A Promotional/Branding Sense , For Its Area Served " goes , I can claim some background here ~ I grew up in Westchester County , New York . The newspaper which covers it (and Putnam and - Um , I forget !!!!!!!!! It's three counties .) , which is based in White Plains ` now known as the JOURNAL-NEWS - endlessly refers to its are as " LO-HUD " , an abbreviation for " The Lower Hudson Valley " .
HONESTLY !!!!!!!!!!! The abbreviation " Lo-Hud " sounds like the kind of abbreviation no-one but a regional Chamber of Commerce would think of...and try to promote .
I am only referring to the (I think) silliness of " Lo-Hud " as a term , nothing else .
I suppose the idea of referring to your area as the " MID-South " may come form a concept where Virginia , perhaps the Carolinas , are the...Um , " Upper South " ? Left South .
Um , a vertical rather than horizontal way of defining/slicing up the concept of the " South " region of the United States , anyway ?

Well...they URL it as they hurl it , anyway !!!!!!!!!!! That can be said for them .
It's Westchester , Rockland , and Putnam counties that they aim to cover . I am sure quite well .r
I am not criticizing their newspaper , my Beloved Home Town Region of Westchester County , NY...nor the concept of a " Lower Hudson Valley " . Merely the phrase " Lo-Hud " !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LO-HUD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lower Hudson , yo . Yeah , considering what might be sunk in the Hudson River's riverbed , speaking of " horizontal " mapping out of areas...........
