...has there ever been a story that touches on how he feels about Captain America? It would seem to me that a man known for helping stop Hitler would be someone hard for Magneto to fight against...he would, you would think, at least be a bit conflicted.

  • There was a book back in an 80s, Avengers vs. X-Men, in which the Avengers were to bring Magneto in to finish his trial before the world court that was interrupted back in X-Men 200. This was when Magneto was actually a member of the X-Men, so this order brought the mutant into conflict with the Avengers.

Toward the end of the series, Magneto had some deus ex machina device built into his helmet that allowed him to wipe anyone's mind free of prejudice. He refused to go with the Avengers, and at the climax of the battle he shot Cap with the helmet, saying something along the lines of, "now we'll see if you still want to bring me in." Cap was staggered, but then said, "that doesn't change a thing." Magneto was so astounded to meet a man he now felt had no prejudice in his personality that he willingly went with the Avengers.

Or something like that. It's been a couple of decades since I read it.

I think that could be the basis for an interesting story.
