San Diego, CA (April 1, 2013) – At WonderCon, IDW finally unveiled the creative team that will be re-launching the legendary THUNDER AGENTS this August.
Phil Hester (Godzilla, Green Arrow) will be writing with Andrea Di Vito (Dungeons & Dragons) providing interiors as the dynamic THUNDER AGENTS go about putting an end to global evil before punching out for the day.
“I'm thrilled to be working with Andrea on this book,” said Hester. “His style hits all the right notes, combining the best of modern storytelling sensibilities with classic super hero dynamism. Our goal is to preserve what was unique about the original Wally Wood-helmed run, but inject it with the high-octane action and resonant character development modern readers demand. Andrea's work will convey to readers the sense of excitement we feel as creators."
“I am very excited about the creative team assembled for the IDW launch of THUNDER AGENTS,” said David M. Matthews, Managing Director of Radiant Assets, owner of the property. “I have a great respect and appreciation for Phil and Andrea’s work, and I’m ecstatic over having Jerry Ordway and Dave Sim contributing covers. It really doesn’t get much better than that!”
"Let me tell you, nobody's more excited to be doing bona fide superheroes at IDW than I am," said THUNDER Agents editor Tom Waltz. "And to have it be a classic property like THUNDER Agents and have it being kicked off by the massively talented duo of Phil Hester and Andrea Di Vito, not to mention covers by living legends Jerry Ordway and Dave Sim?! Consider me over the moon!"

Speaking of T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, I've been reading golden age Blackhawk lately, and found this Reed Crandall panel which was apparently the basis for the classic T.H.U.N.D.E.R. #7 cover. This was a favorite cover for me, as it was the first one minus Dynamo, and featured my favorite character, NoMan. Crandall, of course, contributed to T.H.U.N.D.E.R., and in fact did the first NoMan story.

Dave Sim covers? Wow, that is certainly out of left field. You could have given me a ton of guesses and it would have taken me a long time to get to him.
DC had the THUNDER franchise as recently as last summer. Anyone know how IDW ended up with it?
Apparently DC just let the rights lapse, and IDW picked it up pretty much immediately. I don't know who actually owns them though. The deal also allow them to reprint the old material too if they want to.

That's well-spotted, Craig. It is a nice cover, and the comparison underscores how good the original panel was.
Ah okay. That makes sense.

DC really dropped the ball on this one, almost as much as they did with Red Circle and especially Milestone. I hate to say this as a long-time DC fan, but I hope all three of these properties find a lively life elsewhere.
For the first time that I can remember, I have only one DC title that is currently on my pull list (Batman Inc.). And as limited as that series is, it will be no time before I'm reading nothing from DC.
