Once again I'm faced with a column topic where I need Legionnaire guidance: The Inhumans.
Sure, I've got all the Silver Age stuff from Fantastic Four and Thor. Sure, I read the series in Amazing Adventures. Sure, I got that 12-issue Inhumans series by Doug Moench from 1975, and the 12-issue Inhumans series by Paul Jenkins from 1998. I read Inhumans 2099 and Atlantis Rising.
But I haven't read any of the recent stuff, and I don't know where to begin. Here's what I can find that I haven't read:
All New Inhumans #1-11
Inhuman #1-14
Inhuman Error #1 (collects three-special crossover)
Inhumans (third series) #1-4
Inhumans (fourth series) #1-12
Inhumans: Attilan Rising #1-5
Inhumans: Once Future Kings #1-2 (ongoing)
Inhumans Prime #1
Inhumans vs. X-Men #0-6
Uncanny Inhumans #0-20 (ongoing)
There may be more (pretty much anything after 2010). So what's important, Legionnaires? What do I need to buy and read to know how the status quo changed from when they were living on the moon to present?
Replies
Well, of course there's Ms. Marvel and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
I think it would also be a good idea to check out Secret Warriors which is essentially a team of Inhumans fighting against Hydra.
I'm not fond of anything featuring the royal family, but I know that Charles Soule has introduced some interesting characters to the mix.
I don't want to buy and read ALL of that! What are the ones I HAVE to read to understand their current status?
If you want their current status quo, likely Inhumans vs. X-men will give you the basic gist. You might add in Royals and I think there's a Black Bolt ongoing. Someone else could likely give you better information.
Royals? Black Bolt? I didn't even know about those! What else am I missing?
OK, I ordered a TPB of All New Inhumans, Uncanny Inhumans, Karnak, Inhuman and Inhumans vs. X-Men. I'll go to the comic shop and sample the rest. Not books I especially wanted on my shelf, but I suppose I can live with it.
Anybody want to chip in with their opinions on Inhumania?
Royals features the royal family--minus Black Bolt--in space.
Black Bolt features the titular character in the prison he meant for Maximus.
We really need the FF back. These guys just weren't made for star characters.
Given that the Inhumans push was more out of spite rather than fan interest I'd be inclined to agree. At the very least, the royal family just aren't very interesting.
I know someone here has to be more of an authority on this subject than myself.
I tried out all the Inhumans stuff when they started the 'All-New' and 'Uncanny' stuff...but basically it's X-Men-lite and I got a bit bored.
I couldn't face / haven't faced yet the Inhumans Vs X-Men stuff as the end was pretty obvious.
I quite fancy the Royals series when it gets to a trade (although the art looks awful!) wasn't aware and don't know what the Once and Future Kings is all about and think Black Bolt might be a tad dull but I still hope they start to get some quality.
(The Karnak series was pretty stand alone - and an interesting take on Karnak but probably has little impact)
Thanks, Randy and Richard. I'd always gotten the impression that Inhumans got a big push specifically to replace X-Men (since Fox had the movie rights) and I'd wondered if anyone had information to the contrary. Because, like you guys say, they just don't seem like prime-time players.
In the meantime, they've killed Wolverine, Banshee, Jean Grey and Prof. X, dishonored and killed Cyclops, dishonored Beast and God knows who or what Angel is now. I miss my X-Men, and neither X-teens nor Inhumans fill that void.
I usually roll with change, but like Richard says, I read the first issues of all the Inhuman stuff when it first came out and felt like I'd read it all before. "X-Men Lite" indeed.
