Last night , at the TV IN ACIDLAND rerospective doc/clipfest I mentioned seeing already , I saw a vintage 1970s advertisment involvng comics...Newspaper somic strips !!!!! Sunday ones !!!!!

This ad , made by Stan Freberg , showed somic comic stripcharacters in an office...First ( IIRC all ) Dagwood Bumstead , the Spider-Ma , Brendas Starr , and then (Little Orphan)Annie and Sandy , with Andy having a " Leapin' Lizards ! " wb above her head , which no other humans do...They discuss how popular Sunday newspaper comic strips are , bringing up Annie's " Broadway show and movie deal " and we see Dagwood showing on small TV monitors such as Grafield and Hagar , saying " So many ' new ' things were first in the comics ! "...After 25-ish seconds I suppose , it ends w/a " Spidey creps/climbs away " joke and a final frame that I think would have been longer in the original to allow for the name of a local sponsoring newspaper .

I believe that it was not so much a consumer spot aimed at those who might read the comics in the newspaper but weren't as a spot encouraging owners ofthings that might be advertised and those who arrange/buy their advertising for them to think about advertising in Sunday comics sections !

Note the emphasis on Sunday - Daily newspapers' comics pages don't' tend to have their own ads - Sunday comics sections do have intersperes and wrapping ads in them !
