I recently reviewed two graphic biographies of jazz musicians for the website All About Jazz, so I thought I should link to them here for those who aren't following me on social media.

The first is Scott Chantler's biography of an early jazz pioneer, cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. It is notable for being almost entirety wordless, a remarkable feat of visual storytelling.

The second is David Chisholm's Chasin' the Bird: Charlie Parker in California (commissioned by the Charlie Parker Estate to celebrate the centennial of Parker's birth). By focusing on about two years of Parker's life Chisholm was able to focus on more character study of the significant people in his life. He changed the visual style for each portrait: the last channels late cartoonist Darwyn Cooke's distinctive noir style (like he used for the Parker books) to great effect.

Both of these are remarkable in different ways, and I recommend them.
