Krypto's Rejuvenation

I remember hearing about a story (in the 70s?) that Krypto the Superdog was getting old and unable to control his powers and Superman had to put him down!! But instead he got younger again! I think it involved Jimmy but I never seen it nor have it mentioned again.

Does this story even exist??

  • Yes, it does. It is "Jimmy Olsen's Super-Pet", from Jimmy Olsen # 29 (Jun., 1958). It is the tale that brought Krypto into the Superman mythos.

The plot is essentially the way you describe, except that Superman does not decide to put Krypto down---just exile him to a place in which his senile pet's super-powers will no longer be a menace. For this, the Man of Steel selects an isolated valley and rings the bluff with kryptonite to keep the super-dog from escaping. However, peculiar environmental qualities of the hidden valley rejuvenate Krypto, restoring his youth and presence of mind. His master then frees him, and the Dog of Steel returns to space to romp and play.

    Hope this helps.
  • Thanks, Commander! I had no idea it took place at the beginning of the Silver Age! I'll check out my "SP: Superman Family" volumes for that!

BTW, in Krypto's Legion of Super-Pets appearances, they said he came from SuperMAN's era, not SuperBOY's. Was this to circumvent the whole "Why doesn't Krypto remember Streaky and Comet?" without having someone try to hypnotize a dog?

    I don't think so.

In most of the occasions when the Super-Pets appeared in the thirtieth century, no specific reference was given to whether the Krypto participating in the adventure was Superboy's or Superman's pet. Clearly, when the animal group was formed, in "The Legion of Super-Traitors", from Adventure Comics # 293 (Feb., 1962), that Krypto was from Superboy's time.

The first---and in my experience, the only---resource which indicates that Krypto's subsequent thirtieth-century appearance with the Super-Pets was the super-dog from Superman's time is the highly accurate Silver-Age Legion of Super-Heroes website (http://www.studiosanning.shawbiz.ca/legion_of_super-heroes/index.htm) maintained by Jo and Terri-Anne Sanning.

They insist that, outside of the Super-Pet's origin tale, it is the Krypto from Superman's time who appears with the Super-Pets. They base this on the fact that, in the second Super-Pets appearance---from "The Condemned Legionnaires", from Adventure Comics # 313 (Oct., 1963)---Lightning Lad uses a time bubble to gather the Super-Pets together to confront the menace of Saturn Girl. In this instance, Lightning Lad collects both Krypto and Streaky, the Super-Cat, at the same time in the past. (Since Streaky did not gain his super-powers until after Supergirl came to Earth, which was, of course, during Superman's time, the Krypto accompanying him was Superman's pet by that time.)

From this, the Sannings conclude that all of Krypto's Super-Pets appearances in the future era are that of the Superman-era dog. Nothing in any subsequent Super-Pets appearances in Adventure Comics dispels this; however, it is still an inferration.

Practically speaking, I don't think the concern over Superboy's Krypto having knowledge of (from the super-dog's perspective) future events is a real concern. After all, who's Krypto going to tell?

    LOL!

Check out the Secret Headquarters (my store) website! it's much better now!

  • While looking through my (nowhere near complete) index, I rediscovered "Superman" #337 (Jl'79) where *SPOILER ALERT* the Man of Steel disguises himself like five of his foes to snap his Kandorian look-alike, Don-El of his delusion that he is Superman. One of the villains Supes portrays is Terra-Man complete with Nova, his winged space stallion. When asked about how this was possible, in the letter column of #342 (D'79), it was stated that it was Comet the Super Horse, disguised as Nova, instead of it being a robot or whatever.

This was probably the last *official* Comet appearance of the Bronze Age but when did Streaky the Super Cat and Beppo the Super Monkey take their final bows?

As best as I can determine, Streaky's final pre-Crisis appearance was in "The Mysterious Motr of Doov", from Adventure Comics # 394 (Jun., 1970), while Beppo popped up for the last time in "The Legion's Space Odyssey", from Adventure Comics # 380 (May, 1969).
  • I guess the Super Pets were phased out in the late 60s. I have a good run of "Superboy" from that period and I don't recall Krypto being around much, if at all. But then, many elements of the Superman mythos were being dropped or limited like Bizarro, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Lori Lemaris, Red Kryptonite, Professor Potter and the like even before the changes of "Superman" #233!
