Inspired by my spewing on and on about Legends of the Dark Knight just a few minutes ago, I decided to review one of my favorite stories from the series.

Legends of the Dark Knight #27-29

"Off the Menu"

David Tischman, Chris Sprouse, and Karl Story

@.99 each

This story amazed me by being the perfect combination of a few disparate things: gross, funny, and nostalgic. Batman is up against a bad-guy version of Image's Chew. Basically, he eats your brain, he gains all of your memories. There is some PG-13 gruesome imagery here, and it sounds like it would be nothing more than horrific. And while there is some legitimate horror in here, it's set off by a refreshingly playful banter between Batman on the scene and Alfred who is back in the cave.

We also get Harvey Bullock!

Lastly, we get to see Bruce Wayne being Bruce Wayne. We get a glimpse into who he might have been if his life hadn't been screwed up, but you don't even really get the feeling that he's acting. This is a Bruce Wayne who gets to enjoy being Bruce, even in the name of taking down the antagonist.

I already had all three of the issues on my iPad before I began reading this, so I'm really glad I didn't have to wait to get to the next part. I didn't even think about turning it off until I'd read all three parts. At a total of $2.97, it is well worth the cost of a regularly-priced comic.

Not sure if this has come out yet in the print issues, but when it does, make sure and pick it up if you're averse to reading digitally.

  • I've put it on my list for the next time I make a digital purchase. In print, it's scheduled for issue 10, shipping July 3.

  • Sounds terrific. Thanks for the tip!
