Marvel's MCG Bullet?

Something I've always wondered, and I'm sure one of the experts will know this straight way, but what was the deal with the MCG logo that some '60s Marvel comics had on their covers for a short period of time? Was it some experiment with their own version of the DC bullet?

The MCG bullet is directly under the usual Marvel Comics Group box

  • I think it’s more akin to DC’s “Go-Go Checks.” Today we’d call it “branding.” Remember the “Pop Art” period? Same thing I'd say.

  • I remember before the Marvel Comics Group box they just used a small MC on the cover. I thought it was a return to that idea.

  • Yeah, that's probably a better comparison.

I still equate "Pop Art" to "Go-Go Checks," though.

  • The odd thing about the "Pop-Art" period was that it lasted only three issues in some titles, and four for others.

I had the impression that it was an experiment for "one quarter", that expired.

But then, I also thought it was just an opportunistic jump on the bandwagon when Andy Warhol and others started stealing comic art for their pantings and pop art.

I don't recall ANY marvel panels being used, do you?  Only supposed Romance Comics, right?

Anyone recall just how long the MGC logo lasted on the covers?

  • I believe Roy Lichtenstein used/stole/was inspired by (lol) the work of John Romita but I think it was his DC Romance work.

I loved DC's Go-Go checks. Those were the first comics I ever bought.

  • Perhaps the idea was to establish a brand icon that could be used on licensed products.

The one about the “image duplicator” looks like Magneto (to me, anyway), but he’s swiping Bruno Premiani in that one. Here’s more…

  • Thanks for the link, Jeff...that's amazing that so many panels have been identified with their source.

Is there any particular reason why he leaned toward DC rather than Marvel?  Afraid of being sued? Or did he had a licensing agreement with them?

(And yes, I agree it LOOKS like Magneto, but I don't recall any dialog like that coming out of Eric's mouth at any time.)

(Well, except for the awful Avengers #110 and #111... but that's another story.)
