  • ...A mads a comment about the difference between the first two Whale-Frankie flix when I saw them, theatrically, back to back when I lived in Santa Cruz...1931 was rather " early silent" (more perhaps than it was " Pre-Code") and Bride was "high classic Golden Age Hollywood".

  • So how would you describe "Son" and "Ghost"?

  • ...I've never seen " Ghost " :-( , I guess " Son " was the last Whale ? or was it ?

They're in the High Hollywood era , too , it's just that '31 Self-Titled is BEFORE it .

  • James Whale only did the first 2.  Shortly after BRIDE, Universal was the victim of a "hostile takeover", and the old, "classic" production team in charge of the studio was BOOTED out (as Dr. P. might say).  Think of it this way.  The "classic" team put out FLASH GORDON.  The new people-- whose first edict was, "We're not gonna make horror movies anymore" (kinda like Chrysler deciding they're not gonna make CARS anymore), did FLASH GORDON'S TRIP TO MARS.  I think you can see the problem there...

The new guys were then in turn THEMSELVES booted out, 2 years later, and a 3rd team took over the studio.  To innaugurate the new regime, the first film they put into production was SON OF FRANKENSTEIN.  It's interesting, in light of all this, that SON appears to be a sequel to a movie that was never made, but should have been (during the time in between BRIDE and SON).  In fact, the same exactly thing applies to FLASH GORDON CONQUERS THE UNIVERSE (my personal favorite of the 3, for its writing, pacing, story structure, costumes, and acting).

A few years ago, off TCM, I managed to tape another James Whale film, one my Dad used to rave about when I was a kid, but which took me decades to track down...  THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK, with Louis Hayward in the dual role.  Unlike THE THREE MUSKETEERS, which tends to follow the book despite many versions, with the sequel, every version I've seen has been drastically different.  I couldn't tell you which follows the book or not, but on the basis of what I have seen, the James Whale version is, by several miles, the MOST ENTERTAINING!  (Just like his FRANKENSTEIN.)

  • I thought Son of Frankenstien was a good film, with a great cast. Of the movies on the other night I dvr'd Cyclops, but I haven't watched it yet.
