Moon Knight Premiere HC

I’ve got to start reading my solicitations more closely! A couple of months ago, my wife, Tracy of Moon-T (whose symbol is the Moon), asked me about Moon Knight while flipping through the latest Previews catalogue. The new volume reprints the same stories from HULK! magazine (mostly), which had previously been reprinted in Moon Knight Special Edition in the ‘80s when I first became interested in the character. I thought it would be nice to own all those stories under a single cover, so I ordered it. The problem is, it is exactly the same issues reprinted in Moon Knight Special Edition, meaning that the first two chapters (with art by Gene Colan and Keith Pollard, respectively) are missing! The story can be followed reasonably well starting with the third chapter, but because it’s a rather convoluted mystery story, those first two chapters really do help! I guess the intention, now as then, to spotlight the art of Bill Sienkiewicz outweighs the need to spotlight Doug Moench’s complete story. The Moon Knight Premiere HC is a somewhat slim volume at 168 pages; it’s not as if they didn’t have room for the first two installments! The slick paper of the Premiere HC editions doesn’t reproduce the color as well as the more “absorbant” paper stock of HULK! magazine, but I knew that going in. Still and all, despite its flaws, this volume is an excellent starting point for anyone unfamiliar with the character or those who want to learn more about his early days.
