Popeye Returns to Comics with IDW

All-new adventures with the “Sailor Man” start in 2012

San Diego, CA (July 21, 2011)—At San Diego Comic-Con today, IDW Publishing announced another impressive expansion of the company’s partnership with King Features to bring POPEYE back to comic books. IDW’s POPEYE comics will offer all-new adventures with this famous character and his friends, including Olive Oyl, Bluto, Wimpy and Swee’Pea. The monthly POPEYE series will be edited by IDW’s co-founder and chief executive officer, Ted Adams.

Created by Elzie Crisler Segar in January 1929, Popeye the Sailor Man quickly became one of the most popular and enduring comics characters of all time. In addition to headlining his own comic strip for over eighty years, Popeye has also been featured in television cartoons, video games, live action movies and countless merchandise.

“I grew up reading Segar’s Popeye and we’ll be bringing his sensibility to our new series,” said Adams. “We’ll be announcing our all-star creative team as SDCC, and plan to launch in early 2012.”

  • ...Around the late 90s a Peter David-written comic book officially married Popeye and Olive Oyl , while , during the Oughties when King Features Syndicate's Web site was free and I'd see the present-day Popeye Sunday strip by Hy Eisman ( the dailes were - colorized?? - reprints by Bud Sagendorf ) , which ignored this...A Sunday had Swee' Pea being officially adopted by Popeye !

    ( I recall that strip having an uncredited , " different "-syled artist , sort of " advertising/institutional art "-looking . )

      " Crisis On Earth-Segar " ???????????!!!!!!!!!!??????????!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have to see some artwork and what style they're going for first.
  • good day for Popeye
  • The Thimble Theater storyline introducing Popeye can be seen at popeye.com/comics.

  • It looks very Segar-esque.

  • It looks good to me. My brother did a drawing similar to that cover years ago. I'll see if I can dig it up and post it here.

  • ...Okay , I was looking for the post REVIEWING the IDW POPEYE...but perhaps this'll make Pete post his bro's drawing !!!!!!!!! Hnyr hee hp .

I have #3 of the IDW new series waiting for me , ight next to me  but, yesterday,  I read #1 of Yoe Comics/IDW's CLASSIC POPEYE  , which reprints Bud Sagendorf comic-book Popeye stories from who knows when...It doesn't say , but it's hard to argue with 51 full pages of comics (Well , incidia/whatevs :-) .) , 3 full comic-book stories and 3 untitled long-dail y/short-Sunday (By standards THEN !!!!!!!!! )gags ,  in the interior and on the covers , respectively , in sort of " faded " (??) color on the back cover and red one-color on the inner covers ( The standard comic-book portion is in standard color - I guess - Maybe looking a little tattered/" from-old-comics " ??????? ) . I'm inclined to think the Sagendorf material might be from the late Forties , but I always tend to think that things come from earlier in an " era " then they in fact tend to be , so maybe they're from the first half of the Fifties .
