I'd give this took to any girl age ten or older and not worry about the killing. Ulga is just a great character for them.
Last issue Ulga had made some progress learning the civilized way of the princesses and more or less gaining acceptance. At least until she found Princess Jullifer in bed with Malick and Jullifer said that no matter how much of the ways of the princesses she learned Ulga would always be Princess Ugg.
This issue that turns out to be a good thing as a band of raiders attacks the caravan and kidnaps the other princesses. They leave Ulga and she goes after them, using her skills to decimate the pirates. This attracts the attention of the Captain of the pirates who after using Jullifer for a hostage ties Ulga up and they all go to a ship. He plans on selling the princesses, not ransoming them and he asks Ulga to join him. It's an interesting moment as we see another outsider, another barbarian, but one who wants to get away from civilization. He considers civilization a prison and wants to be free of it. Ulga calls him a coward, unwilling to live where he has to -for better or worse- trust in others, a society where strength of arms is not enough. It's the point in the story where Ulga learns the difference between them. After Malick and the guards help her get free and the Captain runs (swearing that she'll see him again) Ulga kisses Malick. It is a behavior that the rest of the princesses scorned her for an issue or so back, but Ulga realizes that she doesn't have to be them, she just has to understand them.

You need to be a member of Captain Comics to add comments!
Ulga is to a me a very young Red Sonja or Xena, but someone who's never going to be the rebel or dark force either of them were. I can't quite think of an equivalent for her in fiction.
I'm enjoying this as well, though not quite as much as Courtney Crumrin. I would say it just doesn't have the charm of Courtney's world. That being said, it is a good book.
