I know there are some big music fans here, so I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations (or warnings) regarding turntables. I'm essentially looking for something inexpensive for general listening and I'm leaning towards a Sony based on online reviews, but I have no idea what companies are making decent record players these days. (My last one was a Magnavox and  it was a huge pain - even the cover didn't work right.)

  • You could try one of these
  • Very funny. Everyone knows you can't hear the music very well because that dog is always standing in the way!
  • I haven't bought a new turntable in years; we're still using a pretty good Technics one, although we've got to find a source for a replacement stylus. By "general listening" do you mean to run it through your stereo or home theater system, or a USB turntable you can plug into your computer to rip MP3s?
  • I'm just planning on running it through the stereo.

  • OK, do you still own an old stereo that has "Phono" inputs? When we were shopping for a replacement receiver recently, we discovered that current ones usually don't. You've got to buy a separate preamplifier.
  • I do have an older stereo with a built-in pre-amp and a phono input. I've tested it out and it works fine. I also have a separate pre-amp, so I'm set!
  • I haven't bought a turntable in several years, but have owned several, so I looked at what is available now. We like the Technics turntable we own. It was mid-priced when we bought it, but Technics seems to be fairly high end now. Pioneer always made good moderate priced stuff. And I would feel pretty safe buying a Sony product. I see a lot of Numark turntables, but they seem to be designed for DJ use. You'll probably do fine with the Sony you have in mind.
  • Thanks Mark. I appreciate your assistance!
