If you like “Jim Starlin’s “cosmic” work, you’ll like this. If you don’t, you won’t.

(I wrote this up as a lengthier review but I wasn’t happy with it so I decided to do it as a “Quick Hit.”)

  • I like Starlin's work when I'm in the mood for it. As I get older, those moods come less and less often.

Still, I'll probably try this just because "Thanos" is about to become a household word!

  • Starlin owned the Seventies - he was at or near the top of my favorite list for both writers and artists during that decade. Most of what he has done since hasn't really resonated with me as he seemed to revisit certain themes over and over. The Thanos book piqued my interest mainly because Starlin handled scripting and art but I may wait it out for a paperback edition.

  • "Starlin owned the Seventies."

This is quite true. Arguably, though, the bar was lower then. Further, he -- along with many others -- were victims of their own success, in that the cool things they introduced proved so popular that now they're cliches. Virtually every costume Mike Grell created for the Legion of Super-Heroes owed something to Starlin. The colored teardrop makeup or tattoo over people's eyes -- especially female peoples -- became so commonplace that I started to refer to it as TOEs (things on eyes) in Comics Buyer's Guide. I'd have called it Teardrops on Eyes except it morphed into scars in star patterns or eyepatches in the '90s.
