I was primarily familiar with his more "adult" work in Heavy Metal and Playboy, but he had a very distinct style thst worked well in those types of comics.
“Frank Thorne’s Complete Ghita of Alizarr” just came out from Hermes Press, or is about to. It collects what was essentially a naughty Red Sonja swipe, after Thorne was bounced from Marvel’s “Red Sonja” proper. He had some sort of stage act he’d do at various conventions where he’d play an old, lecherous wizard across from a Red Sonja Ghita cosplayer. Kinda glad I never saw it.
As you say, he had a distinctive style that worked well on some properties and less so on others. I think I first became aware of him on Gold Key’s “Mighty Samson” but didn’t learn his name until either Marvel or Heavy Metal, whichever came first.
I haven’t heard of any recent work. Sorry to hear of his passing.
