  • How does IDW have Wonder Woman?

  • ...Mark , just liscencing the rights to reprint the strip , just as they have already with the other two Trinity members' old newspaper strip stories .

So , that IDW book leaves the Flattop Jr. story split between two books ?

Or , is it two separate PARTS , with the self-concluding , I suppose , first part in one volume  and the follow-up in the next ?????????

That would be more acceptable .

  • I'd have expected DC and only DC to have the rights to those strips.

  • ...I'm sure they dfo ~ They just far4med it out , so to speak , to IDW .

AS long ago as the 90s , DC then aloowed/had Kitchen Sink reprint the entirety of the 40s BATMAN newspaper strip .

  • Mark S. Ogilvie said:

I'd have expected DC and only DC to have the rights to those strips.

DC licensed the character to a syndicate, and the latter body holds those rights -- including reprint rights -- according to whatever the contract states. And if that syndicate goes out of business, whoever buys up the syndicate's properties gets that contract, and the rights stipulated therein. Either IDW holds that contract, or it's licensing from whomever does. DC has no say in the matter.

And syndicates were king in the 1940s -- DC would have been grateful that they were interested, and probably gave them the kitchen sink. After all, as far as DC knew, the interest in Wonder Woman probably wouldn't last very long, so better to grab the money now under whatever conditions the syndicate sets, rather than forgo the money altogether.

If it helps to put this in perspective, consider that Sony -- not Marvel Films -- is putting out Spider-Man movies, and Fox is putting out Fantastic Four and X-Men movies. Marvel signed the contract with Sony (and maybe the Fox ones, too) when it was in bankruptcy, and likely was over a barrel when it agreed to whatever Sony wanted in the contract. That has come back to haunt them.

But the point is: IDW can do a collection of Wonder Woman comic-strip reprints (not Wonder Woman comic books, which DC owns en toto) in the same way that Sony can do Spider-Man movies (but not Spider-Man comic books).
