Spider-Man: Hooky

This is a $4.99 reprint of the $6.95 Marvel Graphic Novel #22. This is one I gave a pass to because 1) it was fantasy, and 2) whoever heard of writer Susan K. Putney (then or now). But with art by Berni Wrightson, I reasoned (recently, that is), how bad could it be? The answer is: not bad at all! This scomic book is absolutely phenomenal! A timeless story supported by gorgeous artwork. It’s a bit dialogue heavy, but only in comparison to today’s comics. It is not “wordy” by any means, and the art is large enough to support it. There are multiple double-page spreads spaced through out and the pacing pulls the reader right along, barreling headlong to the end. Complaining that comics aren’t fun anymore? Try this.

Say, would anyone be interested in a discussion of all of the 1980s Marvel Graphic Novels series?

  • Didn't read ALL of them. Did read Hooky, though. Thought it was okay. Nothing spectacular. I may have to go back and re-read...if I still have it.

As for Susan K. Putney, according to Amazon she wrote a paperback series called Time Thieves with some hack named Dean R Koontz :P Those were back in the early '70's.

  • Well, maybe "absolutely phenomenal" was pouring it on a little strong, but I've found Spider-Man so unreadable for so long tat I was desperate for anything that would restore that "sensawunda." (Hooky is still pretty good, though, and the ending sets up a sequel.)

  • Just went down to 'the vault' and I see that I bought it a few years ago in London for the princely sum of £1.  Haven't read it yet though.

I might give it a read in the next week or two and come back...

  • Yep, just checked. That was one of the graphic novels I sold. Still have Star Slammers and Super Boxers, Though! :)
