The All-New X-men

I thought there might be a need for a separate thread to discuss this interesting concept of bringing the original five Xavier schools students into the present day Marvel continuity.

We've already talked a little about how little happened in the first issue, except for The blue furry Beast traveling back to X-men #8 and persuading the team to return with him to the present.

The second issue moved along a lot... with the new kids meeting just a whole lot of the current mutant crop at the School...including Wolverine, Iceman and others.  There's some seriously good interplay here, as everyone is behaving in character, and the reactions to the shocking changes awaiting many of the young students.... Jean gray developing telepathy...Hank being shocked by his blue fur and the desperate gamble that he's taken...the death of the Professor and the outlaw status of Cyclops.....all are very good points and reactions.

However, the idea of the new students stealing the Blackbird and knowing how to fly it without training... well, I just don't know about that yet.

But given the second issue finishes the set-up for the series... I'm along for the ride.

How about you?

  • Story Idea:

I've got to tell you that Unus and Blob imitating the X-men seems to me to be a very logical way to discredit your opponents.  Although I'm not nuts about the story, I think the idea of imitation X-men is a lost storyline thread that should have been dealt with again.  After Unus and Blog escape by riding a subway train, they and their imitation Xavier-school duds are never seen again. I thought the ploy had worked well enough that others might try it again.  I'd love to see this addressed in  the new  series "The all-New X-men".  How do I suggest this to  Bendis? Hmmmmm?

  • I have adopted the following new criterion for buying new periodical comics, and All-New X-Men #1 did not meet it: “After reading a new comic book, I have to be glad that I spent four bucks on it.” Despite my general dislike of BMB’s stories (particularly his dialogue), I gave issue #1 a try based on its premise. But issue #1 was a disappointment, spending too much time on set-up before getting the part of the story Marvel sold me on. If I were editor (yeah, right!), I would have told the story from the original X-Men’s point of view, filling in the “backstory” as they themselves learned it.

Upon further reflection, something else bothers me about the premise and that is why Henry McCoy (of the present day) would think that Scott Summers (of the present day) would be influenced by his past self. If my future self came back in time to offer advise, I’d certainly take it; but if my past self presumed to do so? I’d probably kick my own ass and send myself on my merry way. What hubris! Besides, what’s done is done. What can be gained other than making the Scotts feel bad about himselves.

  • After the damage of Hurricane Sandy, the disruption of subway service and a drastic change to my work schedule, I finally picked up two months worth of comics. I read All-New X-Men and thought this is a very good first issue, only to realize that I actually read #2! And got what was happening! On the basis of the real #1, I can see the so-so reviews but #2 is far stronger and it is an intriguing premise.

But if Hank of today is dying, how can he appear in (New) (New) New Avengers #1? As part of another team?

  • Well, technically he's "dying" as in present tense...I suppose he could still join new teams. Just without the plan to stick around very long.

  • Captain America: "Hawkeye, get the Beast's membership dues up front! And make it fast!"

  • So how does everyone feel about this series so far?

Personally, I think it's weird that Beast shared EVERYTHING about Jean Gray's life  with her the way he did.

But I like most of what Bendis has written (that I've read) and I have loved Stuart Immonen's artwork since he first showed up on Legion of Super-Heroes back in 1992. I'm on board with this one!
