The Strain Season 2

The second season of The Strain began July 12, and the Vixen and I quite enjoyed it.

Not that there aren't some faults with the show. One is that the principals never get killed even when it's implausible that they don't. This week they had a running battle with huge numbers of vampires, who inexplicably forgot they had a long-range weapon, i.e., the "stinger." However, the vamps remembered it when they needed to infect the two throwaway characters present, who were cowering in the background.

This happens a lot. When the plot calls for it, the vampires use the stinger. When one of the stars is in the scene, they just wait to be shot/stabbed. There's also the issue of the worms, which are released not only by the stinger but also whenever you shoot or stab one of the vampires. The little buggers are quite aggressive when the plot calls for it, and land on the people the plot has red-shirted, but somehow the stars never get splashed by the worm-infested "blood" of the vampires they are stabbing/shooting. Pretty preposterous.

Also, star Corey Stall, who usually sports a shaved head, wears a big, handsome wig. It's not obvious, but I wonder why, and now I can't stop looking at it.

All that being said, it's a rousing show, with that sense of menace and doom that permeates The Walking Dead. Things are getting worse episode by episode, and they're not going to get better any time soon. The "science" of the vampires is well thought out, and there's nothing supernatural, so it's fairly grounded for a sci-fi/horror show. Both the special effects and the production values are high, and the actors are mostly veterans who do a good job. (You'll recognize the actor who plays Abraham Setrakian as the same guy who plays Walder Frey in Game of Thrones.)

  • I didn't like Goodweather at all at first, and then it finally dawned on me: We're not supposed to. He's a jerk! I suspect learning how not to be a jerk will be his character arc.

  • Corey Stoll is good at playing jerks. I also enjoyed him in House of Cards and expect to enjoy him in Ant-Man

  • I'm a fan of the show as well. It's nice to see vampires done properly instead of as dopey teen romance.
