COUNT CROWLEY, AMATEUR MIDNIGHT MONSTER HUNTER #2 (OF 4)

Story: David Dastmalchian | Art/Cover: Lukas Ketner | $3.99

"The only way to cure a werewolf is to kill a werewolf." So says Jerri Bartman's monster-hunting mentor. But there's a problem ... the werewolf in question is not only a member of Jerri's AA group, he's a pretty decent guy. His volatile ex-girlfriend isn't as friendly, though. When the ex shows up, the claws and the fangs come out.

Reluctant horror host Jerri Bartman is back in the new comic miniseries, Count Crowley: Amateur Midnight Monster Hunter! Created and written by David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad, Dune), Count Crowley is a love letter to pulp horror and horror hosts, as well as a tale of dealing with personal demons. Dastmalchian teams up once again with artist Lukas Ketner, colorist Lauren Affe, and letterer Frank Cvetkovic to present the continuation of the hit comic series.

  • Dark Horse has sent me DRCs of most of the Count Crowley material, including this issue, so Imma read it and report back.

FABLES #151

Story:  Bill Willingham | Art: Mark Buckingham, Steve Leialoha | Cover: Qistina Khalidah |$3.99

Once upon a time, fans met the characters of Fabletown, the hidden city populated by legendary heroes and villains of fairy tales and folklore. Now, in celebration of its upcoming 20th anniversary, the bestselling series Fables is picking up where it left off — and expanding into the DC Universe.

On sale the first week of May 2022, the main story line continues with Fables #151—just in time for the 20th anniversary of Fables #1. Fables #151 is the first installment of “The Black Forest,” a 12-issue arc that picks up where the story left off in Fables #150, and is also a perfect jumping-on point for new readers. The series also reunites the core creative team, with pencils by Mark Buckingham, inks by Steve Leialoha, colors by Lee Loughridge, and letters by Todd Klein.

“We introduce a great new character and catch up with many of our most beloved characters from the previous issues,” says writer and creator Bill Willingham. “Mark Buckingham has agreed to draw all twelve issues of this tale and I believe he’s doing the best work of his career. Yes, I know I’ve said that several times before, but can I help it if he keeps getting better and better?”

  • I enjoyed the original premise, and read the first 150 issues with interest. I even bought the big hardbacks.
  • The various spin-offs? Not so good. Jack of Fables, Cinderella ... eh, I read 'em, but I didn't buy the HCs. Not material I will ever revisit.
  • Then came Batman vs. Bigby, which I didn't bother to read. I mean ... the story has been told, hasn't it? We're in happily-ever-after territory?
  • Evidently not. But I really think we should be. I'll sample this, but I think the story IS told. Willingham may be returning to the well one time too many. I will wait and see.

This showdown has major ramifications for Black Canary in Shadow War Omega #1, on sale May 31.

YELLOW CAB GN

Story/Art: Christophe Chaboute | $19.99

After 20 years working on film and series shoots, Benoit Cohen is drained. His enthusiasm gone, a desire to stop writing and put down the camera takes over. In the city for a year, he still wonders about how best to absorb the rich diversity of the cosmopolitan metropolis, settling on a simple idea: he will become a taxi driver.

Behind the iconic Yellow Cab, behind the fantasy of freedom and independence, behind the faces of his thousands of passengers, Beno t discovers a world to which he is a stranger. He dives into his new life with the idea of turning it into a screenplay for a future film, but the material he collects from this social experiment marks him deeply, leading down unsuspected paths: First, the administrative maze that leads to the taxi driver's license. Then the world behind the scenes. And finally, the prejudices that surround the profession and lead customers, cops, and the entire city to look at it-quite randomly-either with indifference, kindness, or aggression. The project transforms into an autobiographical novel interspersed with reflections on the creative process, and with the help of Chabouté, it is now a sensitive, deeply human graphic novel with breathtaking illustrations that pay vibrant tribute to New York City.

  • Why does everybody in New York think that writing about New York is fascinating? I'll read this and report back, but I don't think any city is as interesting as New Yorkers think New York is.

I HATE THIS PLACE #1

Story: Kyle Starks | Art/Cover: Artyom Topilin, Lee Loughridge | $3.99

Image/Skybound has announced I Hate This Place, a new supernatural horror series from the all-star team of Eisner Award-nominee Kyle Starks (Sexcastle, Rock Candy Mountain), artist Artyom Topilin (Ice Cream Man Presents Quarantine Comix Special), and colorist Lee Loughridge (Deadly Class, The Good Asian).

After inheriting a farm house, Trudy and Gabby are ready to start the next chapter of their lives together...except it’s already home to a mysterious force that’s attracted ghosts, aliens, and all kinds of supernatural beings for decades. Now, Gabby and Trudy must play by the “house rules” in order to survive the most frightening place on Earth.

“It’s a true honor to be working with the good people at Skybound again and an ever greater one that they’re willing to let me dip my toes into horror,” said Starks. “You may all know me best as a comedy writer — twice nominated for the Eisner for Best Humor Publication — but comedy and horror are similar beasts. They both rely on tone, set up and pacing. If you enjoyed my comedy works, I think you’ll really love this adventure.”

“The mysterious and awful Rutherford Ranch of I HateThis Place is being brought to life by the incredible efforts of Artyom Topilin and Lee Loughton,” continued Starks. “They’re doing incredible work that’s going to blow you away. And I believe this book will too. If you love the heart of horror — normal people in frightful, dangerous situations — then this is the book for you.”

"This comic is pretty much everything I love to draw: monsters, gore, creepy woods, cool girls and charismatic bastards,” said Topilin. “If these are things you also like to see in your comics, you’ve come to the right Place.”

In order to provide retailers and fans with options, each issue of I Hate This Place will have open-to-order covers with the new series title and explicit version of the series’ original title, F*ck This Place.

“We’ve heard the requests from fans and retailers to have different versions of I Hate This Place #1 that meet their needs, so we’ve decided to offer a variety of options for each issue of the series,” said Jon Moisan, Editor at Skybound Entertainment. “Kyle, Artyom and Lee have created a captivating horror series that really speaks to the fears we have about our uncertain futures, and we know you’re going to fall in love with the first issue, no matter the title on the cover.”

“I HATE THIS PLACE is my favorite kind of horror comic. Well-designed creatures, natural writing with some humor, great art, intriguing setting and characters that I really want to like (but probably won’t). By the end of the first issue, I was completely engrossed by this weird world. Can’t wait to read more.”  — Michael Walsh, The Silver Coin

I Hate This Place is everything you want in a comic, and it should come with a neck brace as it shifts from crime, horror and romance at whiplash speeds. Add it to your pull list.” — Gerry Duggan, X-Men

  • I actually think it's cool that the creators thought that titling a comic book with the eff word was going to work. It didn't, of course, but who are they and why did they think it would?

IPHIGENIA IN AULIS: AGE OF BRONZE EDITION GN

Story: Euripides, Edward Einhorn | Art/Cover: Eric Shanowar | $16.99

The most powerful dramatic script by Euripides springs to life anew in a fresh adaptation by writer Edward Einhorn (Paradox in Oz, Fractions in Disguise, The Marriage of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein) with Age of Bronze art by Eisner Award winning Eric Shanower (Age of Bronze, Oz Graphic Novels, Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland) in the forthcoming Iphigenia In Aulis.

“I have long wanted to combine theater with the graphic novel form, a play on paper, as I call it. Eric and I have been planning this project for about a decade, and I am very excited to see the way his art has brought the work to life,” said Einhorn.

High King Agamemnon faces the most crushing dilemma of his life. Kill his beloved eldest daughter? Or forfeit victory in the Trojan War? A father’s secret plot clashes with a girl’s romantic dreams in this chilling classic play from Ancient Greece.

Shanower added: "I’m proud for my Age of Bronze comics panels to add power to Edward Einhorn’s lively translation of this stark Greek tragedy."

  • When I was in high school, I had to read a bunch of Greek plays. It was actually pretty interesting. And then in later years I discovered that a whole lot of other stuff lifted from Greek lit, so I was a step or two ahead having read the originals.
  • But I will confess to this: At 17, I couldn't keep my Euripedes separate from my Aeschylus. It would be years -- maybe decades -- before I knew enough Greek etymology before my brain could keep one ancient Greek word or name separate from another.
  • So while I may recognize that a TV show or movie or comic book is lifting from a Greek play, I can't tell you which one it came from without looking it up. And then, honestly, I will forget if it's Euripedes or Sophocles or Umptyumptides right after.
  • But I WILL remember what the play was telling me. Because those Greek fellers knew their onions.

This April, Vita Ayala and Rod Reis’ NEW MUTANTS run will bring the heat to the X-Men’s Destiny of X era with a brand-new arc that will see a war ignited between MAGIK and the GOBLIN QUEEN! “THE LABORS OF MAGIK” will kick off in NEW MUTANTS #25, a perfect jumping-on point for the series that is redefining what it means to be the next generation of X-MEN.

They were the central stars of the groundbreaking classic X-Men crossover INFERNO, and now more than 30 years later, Illyana Rasputina and Madelyne Pryor are ready to fan the flames once more! Illyana IS the rightful queen of Limbo …but she’s been awfully busy on Krakoa. And now that Maddie’s back in action, she’s determined to sit on the throne that was once promised to her. Who will you bow down to?

To commemorate this highly-anticipated storyline and to celebrate the book’s 25th issue, some of the industry’s leading artists have gloriously depicted the two queens of mutantdom in incredible new variant covers!

  • More than a month late, like most X-books.
  • Has Marvel finally figured out that Illyana is the star of New Mutants, and that the rest of the team is boring? That would go a long way to making this book work for me.
  • Also, Underboob shots (see cover) are the New Thing in pop culture. It used to be Sideboob, but that's so last year.

BELLE: LABYRINTH ONE-SHOT

Story: Dave Franchini | Cover: Jeff Spokes | Zenescope | 32 pages | $5.99

Legends speak of an ancient labyrinth, one filled with horrifying and deadly creatures, as well as the remains of the brave warriors foolish enough to trek its elaborate web-like corridors. But at the center of this dangerous network of blood and beasts lies the key to a world beyond our existence, and Anabelle "Belle" DiMarco is on a mission to scour this vast maze in search of a priceless reward.

Getting in is easy, but finding her way out can prove more of a challenge than she imagined. Because what she finds within might cost her more than her life, as her soul hangs in the balance!

THE FOX: FAMILY VALUES ONE-SHOT

Script: Dean Haspiel, Vito Delsante, Alex Toth | Art: Dean Haspiel, Richard Ortiz, Alex Toth, Matt Herms, Jack Morelli | Covers: Dean Haspiel, George Caltsoudas | Archie | 32 pages | $3.99

The Fox: Family Values follows the life of the superheroic Patton family, all considered “freak magnets” who can’t help but do what they can to save the day … whether they like it or not!

First, Dean Haspiel returns to writing and art duties in “Mid-Life Pisces.” Can a family of antiheroes with three different philosophical points of view break bread at the end of the day? The patriarch, investigative journalist Paul Patton, Jr. (aka THE FOX) is desperate to find another story. He tries to get his son, Shinji (aka GHOST FOX) to come along with him, but his teenage son is more interested in dating than finding exclusive stories! Meanwhile, his wife, Mae (SHE FOX) must confront some sins of her past in the form of two super-villains!

Then, in “Back to Back,” written by Vito Delsante with line art by Richard Ortiz, we venture to the past, before Paul and Mae were married! The two are hours away from their wedding ceremony and are presently missing their final wedding rehearsal while they’re detained by a mad supervillain. How will they make it to their nuptials?

All that PLUS a special reprint of a classic Fox story by the legendary Alex Toth!

The return of this classic Red Circle Comics superhero was a priority for Archie Comics, explained Senior Director of Editorial Jamie L. Rotante. “We wanted to bring THE FOX back to the spotlight in 2022 in a way that makes it very accessible to new fans while also honoring what's come before. And what better way to do that than bringing back Dean Haspiel? Dean, alongside Mark Waid, helped firmly establish the modern version of THE FOX in the hearts of fans with the beloved FREAK MAGNET series. What's so interesting about this character is that he's a superhero unlike any other — he can deftly tackle both serious issues and weird and wacky villains and situations all in the same issue. We're thrilled to have Dean back to tell an all-new story, alongside Vito Delsante, Richard Ortiz, Matt Herms and Jack Morelli, and we can't wait for people to grab this one-shot off the shelf in May."

Haspiel spoke about his return to the Patton family’s adventures: “When I plotted and drew ten issues of The Fox, I was basically given full latitude to do what I wanted and it encouraged me to open all kinds of unexpected doors. After a good 5-year break, I wondered where The Fox was these days and realized his ‘freak magnet’ curse had become a family affair. I decided to explore a day-in-the-life story about a man and his wife and their son and how each one of them deals with their idea of what it means to be a hero. I also wanted to deliver a tale that could introduce The Fox to new readers and spark the possibility of more stories!”

Delsante, no stranger to Archie Comics’ superheroes himself, expressed his excitement about the project: “The thing that makes The Fox stand out is that you can tell virtually any story with him! All credit to Dean and Mark Waid for opening the floodgates and making him a ‘freak magnet.’ There's nothing wrong with telling a typical cut-and-dry superhero story, but I think that being able to throw everything, including the kitchen sink, at the Pattons is extremely tempting.”

  • Honestly, I haven't cared for anything Dean Haspiel has done outside of The Fox. But I LOVE his work on The Fox. Or maybe I just love what Mark Waid established with the character on his short stint at Archie, and Haspiel brings that to life.
  • I know everybody reading this is familiar with the Archie/MLJ superhero line, so I probably don't have to tell you about all the times they've been resuscitated to enormous yawns from the comics literati. That includes me, who was not at all impressed with the Mighty Heroes line in the '60s, the Red Circle line in the '80s, the Impact! line in the '90s, and so forth. (Although I bought them all, because I'm Captain Comics.)
  • But when Waid took on The Fox in 2013, he didn't just try to do a modern spin on a '40s costumed acrobat, he established WHY Paul Patton dressed up like a B-list Batman: He has no choice. Patton is a "weirdness magnet," who draws weird events to him (or vice versa) and, fortunately, and coincidentally, is gifted genetically to be able to Spider-Man his way out of trouble. (The genetics extend to his kid and, somehow, his wife.)
  • So, OK! Now there's a reason for The Fox to exist, and to do the things he does! That was actually a first for the character. It only took Mark Waid and 73 years!
  • So I have enjoyed The Fox material that has come out since 2013. And I will likely enjoy this.

Two Lady-Birds. Two eras. Same incredible powers: They can fly and their genes are unlike any other known being on the planet. Who are they?  And how can they be connected.

They have no clue about each other but their goal is the same: freeing themselves from patriarchy, abuse, greed and exploitation.

Story: Sachi Miyabe | Tokyopop | Teen | 208 pages | $12.99

Learning how to navigate the world of fashion and modeling is a struggle for Mame in Sachi Miyabe's Mame Coordinate Vol. 1.

But then Mame (born in Tottori prefecture) was discovered by an intimidating, bespectacled rookie manager, and now begins the arduous task of getting her ready for auditions! The road to Top Model looks awfully steep from here.

MY BROTHER TEDDY ONE-SHOT

Story: Jaromir Francois | Art/Cover: Todor Hristov | Source Point Press | $3.99

Remember when you were a kid lost in your imagination with your toys scattered across the floor? You with your favorite toy; maybe it was a cowboy, an action figure, a doll or a teddy bear. It doesn't matter which one you had because we've all felt that unbreakable bond that a kid has with their favorite toy. But what if that bond was tested? What if the bond was so strong, the toy took on a life of its own to leap into hell with the hope of returning you home?

  • This might be great. But, boy, it sure sounds like cliche.

WRONG EARTH: PURPLE ONE-SHOT

Story: Stuart Moore |  Art: Fred Harper | Covers: Jamal Igle, Jerry Ordway, Gene Ha | Ahoy | $4.99

The WRONG EARTH event of 2022 continues! Meet the masked vigilante Dragon-Fly of Earth-Kappa — a world of big hair, shoulderpads, and funk music, where the 1980s never ended and Greed is always Good. Written by Stuart Moore (Poe’s Snifter of Death, Marvel Crisis Protocol: Target Kree), with stunning art and color by Fred Harper (Animal Man, Snelson).

All five WRONG EARTH specials feature covers by co-creator Jamal Igle and a special incentive variant cover by legendary artist Gene Ha (Top Ten, Mae). This issue also features a second variant cover by the great Jerry Ordway.

We activated your nostalgia with THE WRONG EARTH: TRAPPED ON TEEN PLANET, we inculcated a deep fear of public works projects in you with THE WRONG EARTH: FAME AND FORTUNE, and now we're here to put the funk back in your heart with THE WRONG EARTH: PURPLE.

Writer Stuart Moore (of CAPTAIN GINGER fame) and artist Fred Harper (of SNELSON acclaim) have joined forces to bring you the funkadelic world of Earth-Kappa, "where the 1980s never ended and Greed is always Good." PURPLE #1 will be stores in May, so to tide you over until the bassline hits, we've got a couple of sneaky interior panels here to share with you.

Did we swipe these off of a distracted Stuart Moore's desk by indicating there might have been a really interesting cat stuck in a tree outside his office window? We'll never tell.

  • The Legionnaires have spoken: This is good.

COLORLESS VOL 1 GN

Story/Art: Kent | Translation: Giuseppe di Martino | Lettering: mono | Seven Seas | 184 pages | Teen (13+) | $14.99

A stylish noir-punk thriller set in a world stripped of its color and humanity. A cosmic disaster changed the Earth forever, stripping away every last drop of color from the world. Mankind also changed: the familiar human face is almost forgotten in a world now populated wholly by mutants. Against the backdrop of a moody urban landscape, a lone wolf investigator named Avidia relies on both his wits and extraordinary gun to hunt down the world's last hidden scraps of color. He soon crosses paths with a very special girl — one who just might hold the key to bringing back what the world has lost. This visually striking manga series is presented in two-tone printing that contrasts a gritty, monochromatic world with sudden electric splashes of neon color.

A haircut, a few Sex Pistols, Misfits and Black Flag records later: suddenly, James has friends, romantic prospects, and knows the difference between a bass and a guitar. • "I actually think it's cool that the creators thought that titling a comic book with the eff word was going to work. It didn't, of course, but who are they and why did they think it would?"

When I was a kid, KISS was a popular band (not with me, I hasten to point out, but with my peers). The anti-fun crowd used to circulate the rumor that the band's name stood for Knights In Satanic Service. I never did believe that, and my belief was confirmed when, years later, I read an unauthorized history of the band which pointed out the name they had originally considered was F*CK... until their manager convinced them no store would carry their albums and no radio would play their songs. That I believe.
